What is Schizophrenia?

• Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it hard to distinguish reality.

• Schizophrenia is often associated with auditory hallucinations and delusions of persecutions

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

• The first symptoms of Paranoid Schizophrenia occur between the ages of 15 and 35

• Changes is eating or sleeping habits• Delusions, nervousness, A tendency to

argue, anger, indifference to opinions of others, withdrawal from friends and personal life, conviction that you are better than others, and hallucinations

Famous Schizophrenics

• John Nash is a brilliant mathematician who suffers from schizophrenia. He has lived through the disease for 30 years and refuses medication. You can get more information on John Nash by watching the 2001 movie “A Beautiful Mind”

• Syd Barret, the founding member of Pink Floyd, was diagnosed as a young age. Some say his drug use furthered the disorder.

I Know This Much Is True

• A good book following the life of a paranoid schizophrenic is “I Know This Much Is True” by Wally lamb. The book is in the point of view of Dominic, whose twin brother sacrifices his hand due to paranoid schizophrenia. The book goes through the life of the two boys and their struggles because of the disease.

• “Donnie Darko” is a movie about a young boy whose hallucination of a six-foot tall rabbit tells him the world will end in a month.

• “A Beautiful Mind” is about John Nash’s struggle with schizophrenia. John’s hallucinations involve working for the government.
