Introduction

As a teaching institution, Kwantlen Polytechnic University values research and scholarly activity in a way that traditional universities do not. Our scholars faculty and students engage closely with our community to both solve issues and informed teaching.

The very nature of KPU, its long history, and our enduring connectivity with our community both direct and inspire research activities. Our faculty, supported ably by amazing students, continues to be entrepreneurial in how they do the research, the projects they take on and how the work is funded. The size of KPU also plays a huge role in research; no longer can we act alone in the traditional silos of disciplinary research; we strive and succeed in breaking down barriers that impede innovation in research and naturally undertake multi- and interdisciplinary projects.

As an engaged university we also value non-traditional types of scholarly activity. Projects in (and with) the community, extension learning and outreach activities are all valued at KPU. We also recognize the visual and performing arts. Without these, as a society, we would be greatly diminished.

The catalog of Scholarly Activity for the year 2012 collected in the following 23 pages represents all that is best about KPU: important, interesting and vibrant activities across the full spectrum of our pedagogy, our community engagement and our innovation.

We present this catalog to both recognize the contributions of our scholars and to inform our community as to the outcome of their support.
