Student Evaluations This History Department's Promotion Policy states that no more than fifty percent of an evaluation ofteaching may be based on student scores. It does not set a minimum score. My evaluations have consistently been equal to, or better than, the department mean score.

Graduate Director, Aug. 2000-May 2003; Jan. 2013-present.

• Processed admissions • Graduate students consult with me

each semester prior to registration. We have thirty-five to forty graduate students enrolled in an average semester.

• No later than after taking eighteen hours, graduate students consult with me to establish an approved program of study, which I monitor throughout the remainder of their study.

New courses developed: • HST 597/697: The Old South; A

Region and Its Legacy • HST 685: The Civil War in Missouri:

the Use and Understanding of Sources (primary sources seminar)

• HST 720 Proseminar: War and Conflict in the Twentieth Century (readings seminar)

• HST 720 Proseminar: War and Memory in American History (readings seminar)

Each of these courses integrated "memory studies" into the History Department's curriculum, a cutting-edge subfield in history as a discipline. For the War and Conflict in

the Twentieth Century course students went beyond traditional history materials, studying film, poetry, and fiction. Writing Across the Curriculum

• The History Department requires that courses with an enrollment below forty-two include a paper and exams that are at least fifty percent essay. All of my examinations, at every course level, are entirely essay in format. My undergraduate survey classes require at least one paper; upper level classes require at two or more, or a major research paper; graduate level classes require extra reading and additional written assignments, including research papers.
