This new schedule is the result of a recommendation from the community foundations who participated in the 2015 statewide evaluation of the program conducted by Lilly Endowment Inc. During the evaluation process, a number of community foundations suggested that identifying Lilly Endowment Community Scholars earlier in the school year would give more time for students to decide which college or university to attend. Previously, the scholarship recipients applied the fall of their senior year and were identified in early spring of the year they graduated from high school. In proceeding with the implementation, the Community Foundation determined that the advanced timeline would benefit not only Lilly Scholars, but all Wabash Valley Community Foundation scholarship recipients. Since the application is a lengthy and detailed process, advancing the timeline for all applicants would ensure students would not need to go through the application twice – thus the reason for the overall schedule change. This program change has proven to be successful as the Community Foundation had 530 students complete an application – a 54% increase over the previous year. Though the Community Foundation experienced a significant increase in scholarship applications from hundreds of applicants, there is not nearly enough scholarship funding for the Community Foundation to award to each deserving student. If you are interested in establishing a scholarship fund within the Community Foundation to benefit the lives of students in the Wabash Valley, please give us a call at 812.232.2234 or stop by our offices at 200 South 8th Street! The Wabash Valley Community Foundation recently awarded 161 college scholarships to students from Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties, and beyond. A listing of these awards, a total of which exceeds $556,000, are presented in this newsletter.

Scholarship Application Schedule Now Better Suits Students’ Needs

For prospective students entering college in the 2017-2018 academic year, the Community Foundation adopted a new scholarship application schedule which went into effect this summer. This new schedule allows the Community Foundation the ability to review, select and notify scholarship recipients at an earlier time, thereby allowing applicants a better timeline in which to consider their options and make their college selections.

Students, as you begin to envision your college and career goals, the time to start getting ready is day one of your freshman year of high school. While it may seem like you have plenty of time to get serious about your academic schedule in preparation for college applications and scholarship opportunities, nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is, many of your college and scholarship applications will need submitted by the beginning of your senior year, if not before. Therefore, the academic scores and resume from your first three years of high school will be the factors that best position you for success with your college and scholarship applications.

College Entrance ExamsAssessment tests, such as the SAT or the ACT, are necessary for most college admissions and scholarship applications. It is important to note that these tests should be taken at least once, if not twice, prior to the beginning of your senior year in order that your results be available for various application processes. For the current scholarship application schedule, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation will need your results by mid-August each year, so it is imperative that you plan accordingly.

Your Academic ScheduleIt is important that you work with your high school guidance counselor, parents and/or mentor as you build your academic goals and schedule, giving this your most sincere effort from the moment you begin high school. Academic rigor is key to colleges and scholarship selection committees as they consider your applications. As college admissions and scholarships have become more and more competitive, it is up to you to prove you are driven to be the very best version of ‘you’ that you can be! A perfect GPA achieved through a ‘soft schedule’ loses respect against a strong – but not perfect – GPA attained through a rigorous academic schedule. This is true for both college admissions and scholarship reviewers. Most importantly, a quality high school education will best prepare you for a successful college experience.

With the successful completion of GIFT VI, the Community Foundation will have additional unrestricted funding for its community grant process beginning in 2018. In preparation, the Community Foundation board has modified how it will review grant proposals in Vigo County.

Consistent with its tagline “For good. For ever. ®”, the Community Foundation seeks to fund impactful visionary grants with measurable goals that can serve as lasting investments in the quality of life of our community. The Community Foundation desires to invest in projects that will create the greatest return in bringing about positive change that will impact Vigo County.

The Community Foundation now offers two types of funding by which a nonprofit agency can apply: Impact Grant and Urgent Need Grants.

Impact Grant Funding ranges from $2,000 to $25,000. The Impact Grants allow the Community Foundation to invest in projects that result in measurable and

lasting positive outcomes. The Community Foundation values collaborative efforts, organizational commitment and the ability to benefit a large segment of the community. Impact grant funding should demonstrate how the grant will enhance community development, image and livability or how it empower those with the capacity to do for themselves so that over time chronic community problems will lessen or be eliminated. Collaborative projects are encouraged.

A request for an Impact Grant will start with a one-page Letter of Intent due on November 1st and June 1st.

Urgent Need Funding of up to $2,000 is available to address sudden, unanticipated and unavoidable needs of a nonprofit organization. Through an expedited process, funding may be available within 10 business days from the submission of the application.

The Community Foundation will be holding informational sessions for Vigo County nonprofit organizations on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at 9:00 AM at the Community Foundation office.
