THANK YOU

Behind each scholarship is a story of people and families grateful for Maranatha Baptist University . As we consider the lives and legacies represented here, may we be challenged by their testimonies and inspired to follow in their footsteps . Together, our donors have lightened the financial burdens of many students . Only eternity will reveal the full and final story .

“Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God forever and ever . Amen” (Revelation 7:12) .

RobeRt hanneman memoRial scholaRshipWhen nine-year-old Anna Tilghman needed a subject for her elementary school science report, she chose the potato .

“Considering who her grandfather was, it didn’t surprise me a bit,” said Betty Hanneman, Anna’s grandmother .

Betty Hanneman established the Robert Hanneman Memorial Scholarship in 2003 in memory of her husband, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and U .S . Department of Agriculture geneticist whose discoveries have proven to be among the most important in U .S . agriculture—especially to fans of the potato .

Endosperm Balance Number was Hanneman’s trademark tool . This genetic formula was an effective method for determining how to best crossbreed economically efficient wild potatoes . Its discovery was a boon to growers . Thanks to Hanneman, they were able to use species already flourishing in their area instead of slogging through the complicated cross-breeding process . Today, Endosperm Balance Number is an industry mainstay that has also been adapted for other plant families . This measuring tool is taught to nearly every horticulture science student in the country .

“I was always thankful he loved his job so much,” Betty Hanneman said of her husband, who died in 2002 . Hanneman Hall, Maranatha’s primary science and nursing class facility, is named after him .

Hanneman was saved at age eight at a summer Bible camp . He was a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Watertown and spent 12 years on Maranatha’s Board of Trustees (1990-2002) . The Hannemans’ two children both graduated from Maranatha Baptist Academy .

“At least one of his colleagues and one of his students have told me they accepted Christ because of Bob’s testimony,” Betty Hanneman said .

The Robert Hanneman Memorial Scholarship provides up to $1,000 each year for a junior or senior “who has made a commitment to making Bible-based science a significant part of his or her ministry,” according to the scholarship’s qualifications .

“I really wanted to help students who had a need and were genuinely interested in scientific work,” Betty Hanneman said .

Emily Mackey was the 2010 recipient . The senior biology major from Bergen, NY, is applying to graduate schools and plans to become a physician assistant .

“I’ve had so many classes in Hanneman Hall,” Mackey said . “Getting to know Mrs . Hanneman was a blessing, and the scholarship was a huge help .”

chRistina haRgRove memoRial scholaRshipBobby Hargrove and his wife, Betty, decided they could best honor the memory of their daughter-in-law by helping those like her . “She was a fantastic nurse,” Bobby Hargrove said of Christina “Tina” Hargrove . “We wanted to see nurses come into the profession who would treat patients and their families like Tina did . We thought that would be the best way to honor her .”

The Christina Hargrove Memorial Scholarship helps students who have been accepted into Maranatha’s Nursing Department and have demonstrated a desire to serve the Lord through nursing . Tina Hargrove was a great example to follow, according to her father-in-law .

She completed five-and-a-half years of college and nursing studies while raising four children, graduating second in her class at Oakland University . Tina eventually became a nurse coordinator for the Head and Neck Cancer Department at the Josephine Ford Cancer Center and Henry Ford Hospital’s Department of Otolaryngology in Detroit, Michigan . Doctors for whom Tina worked testified of her love for cancer patients and her dedication to their needs

Her life ended suddenly in an auto accident on November 27, 2002 . The Hargroves are members of Faith Baptist Church of Warren, Michigan . Their former pastor, Dr . Marty Marriott, is now Maranatha’s president .

“If there are more nurses here like Tina, we want to be sure to help them,” Bobby said . The three recipients of the 2011 Christina Hargrove Memorial Scholarship were Frank Chrisinger, Faith Thompson, Leah Nagel .

As a freshman, Nagel worked a combined 40 hours per week at Maranatha’s Costume Cottage and at Shepherds Ministries, a home for adults with developmental disabilities . She is now a certified nursing assistant at Golden Living Center in Watertown .

“I am paying most of my way, and I have always struggled financially,” Nagel said .

Nagel said the scholarship means more to her than just money . Betty Hargrove writes the names of recipients in her Bible and prays for them every week . The Hargroves also send the students a Christmas gift . Their love and concern for the students who are blessed by the scholarship are very evident .

“The Hargroves know what nursing students go through,” Nagel said . “The legacy Tina left behind encourages me to keep on persevering .”

the jonathan lebeR memoRial scholaRshipWhen Jonathan Leber’s parents prayed about a fitting memorial to their son, they felt complete peace in the idea of helping someone who shares Jonathan’s vision .

“Since Jonathan never made it to the mission field, we thought it would be a good thing to help others who would,” John Leber said . “We wanted to bring honor and glory to the Lord, first of all . We also wanted to help other students get to the mission field who could not afford to pay for all of their schooling .”

The Jonathan Leber Memorial Scholarship has been helping young people since 2006 . It is named in honor of the Maranatha student who died on April 26, 2005, when the small private plane he was piloting ran out of fuel over Lake Michigan .

Kathy Leber wrote a book about her son’s life, death, and enduring testimony entitled How Real is Your God? The Jonathan Leber Memorial Scholarship has provided very real help for other students pursuing a life serving God .

“I’ve often thought of the phrase, ‘Only one life will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last,’” Kathy Leber said . “We wanted to provide for something continuing, something lasting, for Christ . That was our purpose .”

“Ace” Leber was known for his athletic and academic abilities, his remarkable self-discipline, and his zeal in pursing what he believed to be God’s plan for his life—to become a missionary pilot and help establish churches in South America .

“He was full of fun and life,” friend Matt Ledgerwood said during a memorial chapel service in 2005 .

“He didn’t miss a workout, and it showed . He would spend two hours researching and writing a paper and always got an A or B . Anyone who knew him would say his 20 years were lived to the fullest .”

The Lebers first suggested the idea of a memorial scholarship . Some of the initial funds came from Jonathan’s bank accounts . More money came from members of Fairfax (Virginia) Baptist Temple, Jonathan’s home church . Others gave to help encourage future missionaries .

The first recipient, Adam Breiner, was chosen by a College committee in 2006 . Breiner, coincidentally, is related to a member of Fairfax Baptist Temple .

2012 graduate Emily Timblin received the Jonathan Leber Memorial Scholarship in 2010 . Emily was a member of the Argentina Global Encounters team in 2009 .

John Leber pastored United Baptist Church in Easton, Maine for a number of years . He and Kathy have traveled to Maranatha to meet several of the scholarship winners .“ This is all about helping to get the gospel out,” John Leber said .

Russell family scholaRshipRoy and Lana Russell had a burden to help students from single-parent homes prepare for a life of ministry . After communicating their burden to then-Maranatha Director of Development Dr . Mike Duffy in 2006, the Russell Family Scholarship was established .

The Russells particularly wanted to help students pursuing a nursing degree or preparing for full-time vocational ministry . Other qualifications for the Russell Family Scholarship include a 3 .0 minimum GPA and having completed at least the sophomore year of college .

Ten students have been blessed to receive the Russell Family Scholarship since its establishment . Four of the recipients were Nursing majors . Jennifer (Bergen) Medina received the scholarship in 2008, Carrie (Hall) Kerr in 2009, Shannon Taylor in 2010, and Danielle Stegal in 2011 .

Julie (Rabe) Trappen, an Early Education major, received the scholarship in 2007 and graduated in 2008 .

Since 2010, more than one student has been awarded the Russell Family Scholarship each year . Since this is an endowed scholarship, the principal is protected, and scholarships are awarded from interest earned .

Sadie Joutras, a Humanities Applied Science major, was awarded the scholarship in both 2011 and 2012 .

Dave Anderson received the scholarship in 2011, graduated in 2012, and is now enrolled in Maranatha Baptist Seminary . Dave said the scholarship “was a huge ‘shot in the arm’ financially,” and he is “still very thankful to all the scholarship donors for their generosity and provision in my life .”

Roy and Lana Russell are a tremendous blessing to students here at Maranatha, providing encouragement to many .

aquila anD pRiscilla scholaRshipThe Aquila and Priscilla Scholarship was established to help relieve financial burdens for college students fulfilling their student teaching obligations by allowing them to focus on their teaching rather than their school bill as graduation approaches .

Aquila and Priscilla were good friends and ministry partners with the apostle Paul . This couple made tents for a living, working side-by-side to help support Paul . They were known for being unified in ministry and encouraging others .

The faculty and staff members who established the Aquila and Priscilla Scholarship desired to emulate the couple by partnering with and helping others in ministry, specifically Teacher Education majors . The scholarship was first awarded in the spring of 2012 to Laura Harpole .

Through the Aquila and Priscilla Scholarship, the sponsors hope to be a blessing to Teacher Education majors as they seek to serve the Lord as Christian schoolteachers . The need for such a scholarship is even more compelling as the requirements for Christian educators and the costs to educate teachers continues to increase .

maRilyn hilsen WenigeR memoRial scholaRshipMarilyn Hilsen Weniger’s life story is one of perseverance . She was married to Dr . Arno Q . Weniger Jr ., Maranatha Baptist University’s second president . Marilyn Weniger battled multiple sclerosis for the last 25 years of her life until she went home to be with the Lord on June 20, 1992 . A scholarship was established in her memory to honor this courageous woman .

The scholarship is presented to students who, like Marilyn Weniger, have faithfully trusted the Lord to meet their needs while going through trials, sickness, adversity, or hardship . The recipient must demonstrate an exemplary Christian testimony in working, serving, and ministering alongside others while continuing his or her education .

Maranatha Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr . John Brock said Marilyn Weniger endured a severely debilitating case of multiple sclerosis . Doctors performed surgeries in an unsuccessful attempt to ease her pain . Upon her death, Dr . Weniger asked that, instead of flowers or other gifts, people provide donations to establish a scholarship in his wife’s honor . The family was able to create an endowed scholarship that continues to benefit students to this day .

The Weniger Scholarship has helped 26 students since its start in 2005 . Kara Gotzman, a 2008 recipient who has battled Crohn’s disease, said, “The scholarship helped me because I had to pay for part of school myself, and it allowed me

to work less over the summer so I could focus on getting better .”

Gotzman also said that the scholarship helped alleviate stress because she was not as worried about finances . She is now a teacher at Fourth Baptist Christian School in Plymouth, Minnesota . Gotzman said Mrs . Weniger’s story of perseverance gave her hope and comfort .

Heather Williams received the scholarship in 2012 . Williams suffers from severe migraines that cause her to pass out . When asked how the scholarship has benefited her, Williams replied, “It helped me come back to college when I was unsure if I would have the money to return .”

DrewAnn Lanthorn has a similar story . She received the scholarship in 2012 as well . Lanthorn had heart surgery the year before she received the scholarship . She stated, “Without the scholarship I wouldn’t have been able to come back to school . I’d like to thank the donor for making this scholarship available . It’s given me the chance for a better life .”

Marilyn Weniger’s story is an inspiration to everyone, not just college students or people with health issues . She lived a difficult life, but she persevered and maintained a godly testimony . We can all look to her example as an inspiration to continue living for God, no matter what .

uW health paRtneRs WateRtoWn Regional meDical centeR n u r S i n G S c h o L A r S h i p”Not all scholarships are endowed; some are funded on a year-by-year basis . The UW Health Partners Watertown Regional Medical Center (WRMC) Nursing Scholarship is in this category .

This scholarship is provided by the Watertown Regional Medical Center to encourage students to pursue the nursing profession . The hospital works in conjunction with the University to create a relationship that may lead to future employees for the hospital and future employment for the graduates .

Sarah Wright, a 2009 grad who works as a night-shift nurse in the WRMC Intensive Care Unit, received the scholarship in 2008 .

Sarah said, “Receiving the scholarship was an enormous help, as my husband and I were married and finances were tight . It allowed us to not take out as much in loans .” Sarah has opportunity to work with many new graduates . “I believe the hospital has hired about four since summer, and it’s neat to see them grow in their nursing practice .”

Colleen Sullivan, a 2011 graduate who received the scholarship in 2009, has been working in pediatric

home health while training nurses for her current position . Colleen seeks to be a Neonatal ICU nurse in a children’s hospital .

Jennifer Hull received the WRMC scholarship in both 2010 and 2011 . The scholarship was a tremendous blessing to this wife and mother pursuing a nursing degree .

Jennifer is blessed with a husband and four sons who are very supportive of her endeavors . It has required a lot of sacrifice for all of them, but Jennifer’s goal is to graduate in 2014 and use her degree to help others . The support of the Watertown Regional Medical Center has been a great blessing to the Hulls, who are Watertown residents .

Partnering with the Watertown Regional Medical Center provides Maranatha students an opportunity to complete their education while working with a leading regional healthcare provider .

DaviD h. faRRington memoRial scholaRshipDavid H . Farrington served the Lord as pastor of eight churches and was the pastor/administrator for two nursing homes . In recognition of his many years of faithful ministry, Maranatha Baptist University conferred an honorary doctoral degree on Pastor Farrington on May 29, 1971 .

Dr . Farrington went to be with the Lord on November 7, 1992 . Memorial gifts given at the time of his home-going provided for the first-year scholarship in 1993 . Dr . Farrington’s four children (Bruce, Cindy, Dorothy, and Adrian) each gave $2,500 to endow the scholarship in memory of their father . Additional funds were added in memory of Adrian, who passed away February 13, 2012 .

Because of Dr . Farrington’s concern and burden for young people and senior adults, the family’s desire is for this scholarship to be awarded to a student who has demonstrated a special interest in either of these ministries .

Annie (Newcomer) Moore received the David H . Farrington Scholarship in 2009 and graduated in 2011 with a degree in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education . Annie is currently a lead teacher at Kiddie Kampus in Watertown and works with her husband, Josh, in the children’s ministries at Faith Baptist Church, Oconomowoc .

Jaime Jasa, the 2011 recipient, said “that $500 saved me 60 hours of working that could instead be spent on my academics, my social life, or

my spiritual life .” It’s clear that Jaime’s heart for young people and older adults aligns with Dr . Farrington’s . She has volunteered at a home for senior citizens and has worked with disabled elderly people for one-and-a-half years . She has also worked at a camp for special needs children . Jaime’s goal is to be a secondary math teacher .

This statement by Emily Ranch, the 2012 recipient, sums up her gratitude for the scholarship: “Every little penny always helps, and this scholarship is no different . It is always so encouraging to receive a gift like this, and I am so thankful for it .”

Spring 2014 will find Emily doing her student teaching, and her desire is to teach in the inner city . Emily was able to observe a teacher in an inner-city school over Christmas break . “It was so inspiring on many different levels,” she said . “I know that wherever God leads me, children will be a ministry I want to be involved in .”

Emily currently heads up the Tiny Trackers at her church and has been involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters for two years . She is looking forward to what God has in store for her .

Dr . Farrington’s heart for youth and the elderly, and the scholarship established by his family, have provided many opportunities for Maranatha students to complete their education and follow his example of service .

claRon anD ina steWaRt memoRial scholaRshipMany factors can influence the decisions involved in setting up a memorial scholarship . In the case of Dave and Pat Nelson, these factors included Pat’s parents, her job, and their daughter .

The Claron and Ina Stewart Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Pat Nelson’s mom and dad . Pat worked for many years as a teacher in the public school system, retiring last year . Leah Nelson, Dave and Pat’s daughter, is a 2005 Maranatha graduate and has been teaching at Deltona (Florida) Christian School for several years .

These factors led to the Nelsons formulating a very specific goal for the scholarship . Their desire is to help an incoming freshman from a public school pursue a Teacher Education degree . This student will be awarded the scholarship every year until graduation if he/she meets the requirements . Once the student completes the program or fails to qualify for the scholarship, a new recipient will be selected .

Two students have benefitted from this scholarship since its establishment . Tina (Yelland) Davidson, a 2010 graduate, was the first recipient and was able to receive the scholarship for three years .

“One specific way I remember the scholarship impacting me was by God once again demonstrating that He will meet our needs . I was thrilled to receive the scholarship!”

“Another way I was impacted was through the sponsors . Each year I received the scholarship, they sent me a note in the mail telling me a little about themselves and their lives . Not only did this provide me with real mail, it provided me with a little extra encouragement from people I had never met .”

After Tina graduated, Kellee Hubbard was chosen to be the recipient . Kellee is a sophomore Elementary Education major with a Special Education minor . She would love to teach second grade in a Christian school when she completes her education .

“Receiving this scholarship has been a huge blessing . I am working to pay my way through school, and each payment can be a struggle . I think that receiving this scholarship is also a blessing to see there are people who want to help public school kids have the chance for a Christian college education . It’s very encouraging to be receiving support because it helps me know that I am doing what the Lord wants me to do at this time . I am very thankful for the help and support!”

The Nelsons’ desire to honor their parents while supporting Maranatha Teacher Education majors is providing everlasting rewards for current and future students .

“it’s very encouraging to be receiving support because it helps me know that i am doing what the lord wants me to do

at this time.”

basso family scholaRshipThe Bassos were born to parents who immigrated to America and worked hard to make it through the Great Depression . Carl and Ellie Basso both finished high school, but they were never able to take advantage of further education . Receiving a good education was important to the Bassos . They saw to it that their own children finished college, although those children had to work to pay half themselves .

Ellie Basso’s dream was to establish an ongoing memorial to her family that would continue to assist others who shared her desire regarding the importance of educational training for the Lord’s service . She established the Basso Family Scholarship in 2006 .

Students who have a minimum 2 .5 GPA and intend to serve the Lord in full-time ministry are eligible to apply for the Basso Family Scholarship . In all, ten students have benefitted from this scholarship . Six have already graduated from Maranatha; and others are at Maranatha Baptist Seminary, receiving further training for God’s work .

One recipient, Jessica Larson, graduated in 2011 . Jessica said, “The Basso Family Scholarship was a tremendous blessing to me while I was a student at Maranatha . While studying to be an elementary teacher, I felt the Lord leading me toward Christian education . Knowing that Christian education does not always provide the

same type of financial benefits as public schools, I wanted to limit my debt as much as possible by working all through college and applying for scholarships .”

“Now, as a second-grade teacher at Harvest Christian Academy on the island of Guam, I am able to teach academic subjects, share the gospel, and disciple my students as they grow in the Lord . I am so thankful that the Basso Family Scholarship is committed to helping those who will be serving the Lord in full time Christian service .”

Titus Morrow, the 2009 recipient, spent a semester studying in Peru . That was a life-changing experience for him in his preparation for serving God in ministry .

In 2010 Elizabeth Gross was chosen to be the recipient of the Basso Family Scholarship . Liz, a 2011 grad, and her husband Aaron, a 2007 grad, are currently serving the Lord in the state of Washington, where Aaron is youth pastor at Monroe Baptist Church .

The Basso Family Scholarship has helped several Maranatha students, giving them the opportunity to complete their training and enter full-time Christian ministry .

helen steinhaus memoRial scholaRshipOn September 12, 2012, God called home one of His choice servants, Helen Steinhaus . Her husband, Pastor Dick Steinhaus, called the Maranatha Development Office the next day to discuss establishing the Helen Steinhaus Memorial Scholarship .

A review of Helen’s life will provide the best means to understand how this scholarship is an extension of her life .

Helen was born third in a family of seven . Two ladies from the local Baptist church took an interest in the girl whose parents were not believers at the time . Those ladies would go to Helen’s house on Sunday mornings to help her get ready for Sunday School and church .

During the winter, they would let Helen sit in a box on a sled while they pulled her to church . For 10 years, Helen received a pin for perfect attendance . By faith, those ladies invested their lives in Helen; in God’s providence, however, they did not live long enough to see the fruit of their investment .

Dick and Helen Steinhaus were married for more than 53 years and served together in pastoral ministry for 38 of those years . Helen was a godly wife and mother . She used her gift of hospitality for the glory of the Lord as she provided meals and housing for many missionaries, pastors, and evangelists .

Helen took care of some children for a long period of time when a difficult situation arose in a church family . Souls were saved and Christians were encouraged to live for the Lord as a result of Helen’s outreach and testimony .

Two of the three Steinhaus children, Peter and Jane (Doerstling), graduated from Maranatha; the third, Sarah, attended for a year . One of the grandchildren, Rachel (Steinhaus) Calley, has already graduated from Maranatha . She and her husband live in North Carolina . Her sister, Allison, graduated as a Humanities Liberal Arts major . Cousins Julia and Olivia Doerstling are current students as well . Julia graduated as an Accounting Management major, and Olivia is a freshman Elementary Education/Early Childhood major . Maranatha has had an impact on the Steinhaus family, and the Steinhaus family has had an impact on Maranatha . That impact will continue with the Helen Steinhaus Memorial Scholarship .

Young men preparing for pastoral ministry who have finished their junior year are eligible for the $1,000 scholarship . This is the first year for this scholarship to be awarded .

This scholarship is a testimony to Helen’s faithfulness and will help others prepare for a similar life of unselfish service .

the WestRa scholaRshipWhen the Westra Construction Company built the Cedarholm Library and Resource Center in 1997, the workers enjoyed their interaction with our students, faculty, and staff so much that they decided to help our students achieve their goals through a scholarship .

The Westra Scholarship is an endowed scholarship intended for students pursuing a degree with a business management concentration who display Christian character and have a ministry role in the local church .

Steve Westra wanted to have a part in helping support Christian workers as they sought to become involved in public and private businesses . The Bible says in Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven .” The secular workplace like other areas of our culture, is in desperate need of Christian workers who can be a light in the midst of a dark place .

Westra Scholarship recipient James Jorgensen was surprised when he discovered MBU, a Christian University with an accredited business program . Jorgensen, a 2013 Accounting Management graduate, said, “I have been greatly influenced by the School of Business and encouraged that, even in a secular workplace, it is

possible to have a Christian testimony and serve the Lord . At MBU, I learned about achieving Christ-like excellence in everything—including business .”

Jorgensen, like most college students, worked hard to pay his way through school and was blessed by receiving the Westra Scholarship in 2013 .

Ethan Rosen’s life was also impacted by the Westra Scholarship . Rosen worked during high school so he could afford to attend college . He looked diligently for an accredited Christian college with a first-rate business program and a football team . Rosen was blessed to receive the Westra Scholarship twice .

Rosen, a 2012 business management graduate, is enjoying success as a general manager at a Chik-fil-A in Chicago . “None of this would have been possible if it were not for the education I received while I was at Maranatha,” Rosen said .

With the help of the Westra scholarship, many students have been blessed with the opportunity to attend Maranatha . They have benefitted in their careers and, more importantly, they have been trained to go into the world and be the light mentioned in Matthew 5:16 .

the maRy Robinson scholaRshipThe Mary Robinson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 to honor and remember Mary Robinson’s passion for souls and to assist with the financial needs of students who plan to go into missions .

Mary Robinson was the mother of former Maranatha professor and volleyball coach Marsha Jackson and Watertown resident Cindy Platt .

Robinson’s heart was shown through her neighborhood soul winning . She would often go door-to-door, passing out tracts and talking to people about the Lord . She knew the importance of sharing God’s love with those who knew very little about Him .

When students receive this scholarship, they are told Robinson’s testimony . Recipients comment they have been deeply touched by her character and her family’s continued generosity .

Since its establishment, the Mary Robinson Memorial Scholarship has assisted many Maranatha students . Alisa Burlingame, a 2010

recipient, was able to serve short-term in Africa . Keith Craney, Susanna Prusak, and Emily Timblin ’12 received the scholarship in 2011 . Rachel Long and Debra Taylor both received the scholarship in 2012 .

Appreciation for the scholarship is demonstrated by the recipients’ responses . While reflecting on receiving the scholarship, Burlingame expressed gratitude that it helped her pay off a growing school bill and allowed her to focus on studying in preparation for the mission field where God had called her to serve . Recipients have learned how God’s power is shown through His timing and provision in their lives .

The Mary Robinson Memorial Scholarship will continue to assist students as they prepare to serve God on the mission field . Robinson desired to impact others after she left this world . The scholarship is one way her legacy is carried on as her testimony is shared with students preparing for the mission field .

Drbohlav’s primary desire and passion is for creationism to be taught in schools . The Science Ministries Scholarship encourages students entering the science and education fields to use their interests and talents to serve the Lord .

Kelly (Klagos) Riffel ’11 was the recipient of the Science Ministries Scholarship in 2008 as a freshman in the nursing program . “The Scholarship helped lift a heavy burden,” Riffel said . “It reminded me that there are people willing to sacrifice so you can pursue your goals .”

Riffel graduated in 2012 with a nursing degree and became a registered nurse that summer . “The scholarship was greatly appreciated,” she said . “I would not have been able to graduate had I had not received it .”

David Chadwick ’12 received the scholarship in 2011 . “The scholarship allowed me to graduate,” Chadwick said . It allowed Chadwick to see God’s faithful provision of finances throughout college . Chadwick is furthering his studies in Arizona and helps lead his local church youth group .

Josh Pero ’13 was the recipient of the Science Ministries Scholarship in 2012 . Pero wants to be employed in marine biology . “The scholarship process helped me see who God really is,” Pero said, adding he was able to see God’s faithfulness to those who believe in Him .

The Science Ministries Scholarship assisted these students to meet the financial requirements of college and helped them achieve their scholastic and vocational goals . They are grateful for the opportunity to receive the scholarship and will continue to give God the glory in ministry .

Ruth e.v. hey memoRial scholaRshipThe heartbeat of Mrs . Hey’s life reflected perfectly the outpouring of the psalmist’s heart in Psalm 104:33: “I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being .”

Mrs . Hey, who went to be with the Lord more than 35 years ago, lived a life characterized by a deep desire to serve the Lord with her gift of music . Her love for Maranatha was evident to all who knew her . Six of her grandchildren and four great grandchildren attended the college .

Throughout her life, Mrs . Hey was actively involved in music, encouraging young people to serve the Lord with their God-given musical talents and abilities . She taught, composed, and sang; played the organ and piano; and directed church, school, and community choirs . Just before her death, she purchased the University’s first concert grand piano, a beautiful Baldwin previously owned by world-renowned pianist Andre Watts .

After Mrs . Hey’s passing, her family wanted to continue her special legacy . They agreed a music scholarship at Maranatha would be a fitting memorial of her life .

The Ruth E .V . Hey Memorial Scholarship has been offered since 2005 and is awarded to one person

each year in the amount of $500 . Recipients must be music majors who exhibit Christian character and are active in Christian service through the local church .

Melissa Aurand ’12 received the scholarship in 2011 . She remarked that the scholarship aided her financially and that it was a blessing to see Mrs . Hey’s love for music live on in such a meaningful way .

Helen Scott’s Christian testimony, musical gifts, and service in the local church led to her receiving the scholarship in 2012 . Her testimony is an encouragement to others who struggle to meet the financial demands of college . “It was good to see the Lord provide in different ways,” Helen said . Her future plans include serving as the pianist at her home church as well as opening her own private piano studio .

The Ruth E .V . Hey Memorial Scholarship helps students financially, but it also encourages students by demonstrating the Lord’s care for His children . “Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works” (Psalm 105:2) .

RichaRD g. ellis memoRial scholaRshipAnd let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25) .

Richard G . and Elizabeth K . Ellis served the Lord together at First Baptist Church of Rockford, Illinois . They actively supported their church by praying for missionaries, giving to others, and participating in church activities .

When Richard Ellis passed away in 1993, Mrs . Elizabeth Ellis wanted people to remember her husband for his selfless dedication to the Lord’s work . In December 1993, she gave Maranatha Baptist University $750 in his memory .

Mrs . Ellis was interested in helping young people who sought higher education to become well-trained servants of the Lord . Not long after her initial gift to Maranatha, she sent $12,000 and stated in a letter that Maranatha could determine how to use the gift as long as it would benefit as many students as possible .

Mrs . Ellis also added the provision that the gift would be a memorial to her husband . Thus began the Richard G . Ellis Memorial Scholarship .

Mrs . Ellis passed away in 2003, but she included the scholarship in her estate plans . The official

scholarship description reads, “The purpose of the Richard G . Ellis Memorial Scholarship is to provide an award to students seeking to serve the Lord full-time in church related ministries .”

Many students have benefitted from this scholarship over the years . For example, Jennifer Stertz received the scholarship in 2006 . She was an elementary education major who was active at Calvary Baptist Church in Watertown . In fact, she and her husband served in the youth group . Geoffrey Stertz is now an assistant pastor in Maryland, and Jennifer uses her teaching experience to minister to children at their church .

Nathan Reed received the scholarship in 2009 and recently graduated from Maranatha Baptist Seminary . The Judson Hall dorm supervisor said he struggled financially and became discouraged during his freshman year, but receiving the scholarship affirmed God’s call for him to be at Maranatha .

The recipients are grateful for the financial assistance . More importantly, God’s goodness has been seen through the gift of the Ellis family . Their goal of educating the next generation of Christian leaders is being realized .

the stoltenbeRg scholaRshipIn 1989, after an evening of music presented by a Maranatha ensemble, Dr . Michael Stoltenberg’s heart was touched to give back . Stoltenberg joined the Maranatha Board of Trustees in 1997, and since then, has impacted the lives of many students through scholarships .

Stoltenberg chose MBU for a specific reason . “We live in an era when colleges are pressured to cave in to the world,” Stoltenberg said . “Maranatha Baptist University is not going to change its values to appeal to the world .”

The Stoltenberg Scholarship is for young men pursuing a full-time preaching ministry . “I want to see people led to Jesus Christ, plain and simple,” remarked Stoltenberg .

Knowing his scholarship has an impact on people brings him joy, said Stoltenberg . “Scholarships can continue even after I’m gone . I love the idea of using my dollars for good even after God takes me off this earth .”

Stoltenberg has helped many pastoral and biblical studies majors purchase books and software designed to further their education . Often the money becomes secondary while the relationship between the donor and recipient becomes primary . Several recipients described

Stoltenberg as a “prayer warrior and an influential ‘big brother .’”

“God did not necessarily call me to preach, but it’s a desire of mine to help train men to preach the gospel on a vocational basis,” shared Stoltenberg . He also noted that God burdens some to be a “Jonathan” to young men who have full-time pulpit ministries . “We are here to lift up their arms and provide support for them,” he said .

With this vision in mind, Stoltenberg has helped many young men attain their degrees in Biblical or Pastoral Studies . With his financial help, recipients have learned to teach and preach the gospel . Biblical studies major and 2009 recipient Mike Marshall said, “My degree helped me improve my skills as a student of God’s Word and a proclaimer of God’s Word .”

Chris Jochum, 2010 recipient, is currently a student in Maranatha Baptist Seminary . He is youth pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Oconomowoc .

Stoltenberg challenges all recipients to “Keep Jesus, the Gospel, and souls the main things . Even in the midst of doctrinal disagreements, keep the main things the ‘main things’ in everything you do .”

hope pfeiffeR memoRial scholaRshipAs the beautiful recorded voice filled the auditorium during the memorial service, the thoughts of every person turned to the memories of Hope Angelique Pfeiffer and her lifelong desire to be used of the Lord . Hope went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2004, just three months shy of her thirtieth birthday . An infection had traveled to her brain and ended her life suddenly .

Her sister and best friend, Heather Wynn, said Hope loved ministering to people in song . “Any time Hope was asked to sing in church, she would call and tell me how the Lord was using the song she’d chosen in her life that week,” Wynn said . “She was convinced the Lord did this so she would mean every word she sang .”

After battling intense headaches and sickness due to a mitochondrial disease and a pseudo tumor that required frequent hospitalization, Hope experienced a recovery period . She used this time to visit family with her husband, Robert, and their two young children, Michael and Samantha .

While visiting her sister for the Fourth of July, Hope complained of a terrible headache and was soon very ill . She was rushed to the hospital, but early the next morning, with her husband and sister at her side, she passed away .

Hope and Robert met at Maranatha and enjoyed seven years of marriage . They led the youth ministry at Rock Lake Baptist Church in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, before moving to Michigan for Rob to attend seminary . Hope sang often in church and participated in music recordings made by the church . “She just wanted to minister to people,” her sister said .

Hope’s legacy of serving the Lord in music now lives on in those whose lives have been touched by the scholarship established by Dr . Michael Stoltenberg in her memory .

Janine (Kolinski) Brown received the scholarship during her senior year of college . “God’s timing was good,” Brown said . “Because of the scholarship, I was able to spend my summer with Harvest Ministries in Barriguada, Guam . I had never been able to spend a summer in ministry before .”

The Hope Pfeiffer Memorial Scholarship is given to a young lady who desires to serve the Lord in a full-time music ministry . Through this scholarship, the work of God in Hope’s life will always be remembered .

fine aRts anD biblical stuDies scholaRshipsThe Fine Arts Music and Biblical Studies Honor Scholarship began when a friend of Maranatha desired to leave some of her wealth to the University . A faithful supporter of Maranatha in life, this friend wanted her support to continue after her death .

Her sons chose to preserve their mother’s legacy by creating a scholarship in her honor, but they preferred that the family name not be used . The scholarship is awarded to a student in the College of Arts and Sciences (music) or the College of Bible and Church Ministries . Many Maranatha students have received the $500 scholarship since it was established in 2005 .

Recipient Andrea Ly shares, “The scholarship was a gift that removed some of the financial stress that accompanies going to college . It helped me learn to lean on God in more areas in my life .”

Ly gained a solid foundation in teaching, conducting, and arranging music at MBU that allowed her to enroll in graduate school without difficulty . Most importantly, she shared, “I’ve enjoyed opportunities to serve the Lord at MBU that I would not have experienced elsewhere .”

David Cochran was awarded the Biblical Studies Honor Scholarship in 2007 . “The encouragement I received was the largest blessing of the scholarship,” Cochran said . “It helped confirm I was on the correct path in my life .”

From the desire to see godly young people graduate from Maranatha came an enduring legacy . The Fine Arts Music and Biblical Studies Honor Scholarship has helped students fulfill a family’s vision and has helped the recipients accomplish their dreams .

christina Manion received the camp chetek scholarship

camp chetek scholaRshipCamp Chetek, located in northern Wisconsin, welcomes campers from across the United States and seeks to fulfill the Great Commission by providing a Bible-centered, high-quality camp experience for young people of all ages and backgrounds .

Of course, a key to making a week of camp exciting for any child is hiring a great staff . Though Chetek is blessed with full-time workers, most of the off-season is spent recruiting college-age young people . Lifeguards, kitchen helpers, waitresses, camp counselors, and many others are needed to help Camp Chetek run smoothly in the summertime .

Working at camp is truly life changing . But some college students miss out on the opportunity because working at camp makes it harder to pay a school bill . This dilemma led an anonymous couple to help meet the financial needs of students who wanted to work at camp but needed to meet their financial obligations .

The couple continued to give money each summer until Dr . John Davis, Dean of Students

at MBU, asked them to consider creating a formal scholarship . They were pleased to do so, and the Camp Chetek Scholarship was established .

As with all scholarships, special criteria are needed to determine the recipients . For Camp Chetek, the scholarship gives an incentive to second year staffers or those working as nurses . Academic standing and financial need are also evaluated .

Over the years, the scholarship has been a great help to almost thirty recipients . Bethany Turcotte, Brittany Meyer, and Jordan Hayhurst are all scholarship recipients . Turcotte said receiving the scholarship “impacted her view of God’s providence in her life .” Hayhurst has continued his relationship with Camp Chetek even after graduation .

Thanks to a couple who saw the need and helped meet the need, many lives—camp workers and children alike—have been impacted for eternity .

ceDaRholm scholaRshipThe Cedarholm Scholarship is an endowed scholarship awarded to students whose parents graduated from Maranatha . College founders Dr . B . Myron and Thelma Cedarholm established the scholarship to encourage children of alumni to choose Maranatha as the place to prepare for a lifetime of ministry .

The scholarship stands as a testament to the Cedarholm’s vision to see present students pass on the same values and love of Maranatha to their children and their children’s children—ensuring the faithful proclamation of the Truth and the longevity of the University .

From the start, Mrs . Cedarholm selected candidates based on participation in campus and local church ministries, and she also evaluated a student’s overall academic record . Today, Christian character, ministry participation, and academic achievement remain the key elements of eligibility to receive the scholarship .

Bethany Gunther, a recent recipient, is grateful for the Cedarholm legacy . “Being at Maranatha helped me grow spiritually, academically, and

socially,” she said . “The friends I made at college impacted my life .” Practically, the scholarship “helped relieve some financial stress, allowing me to avoid student loan debt,” Gunther shared . “And it gave me more time to study as I had to work fewer hours .”

Being in a Christian environment also benefitted Matthew Huggins, two-time recipient of the scholarship . “I would not have the godly relationships I have now if I had not attended Maranatha,” Huggins said .

Huggins is thankful for the opportunity to attend his parent’s alma mater . “I think it is great that people recognize the blessings God has given them and choose to share those blessings with others,” stated Huggins .

To know that the torch had been passed from one generation to the next, and the children of “their” children desired to attend Maranatha would bring the Cedarholms great joy .

elmeR f. bRoWn memoRial music scholaRshipElmer Brown was a devout Christian man who held to biblical principles, especially in the area of music . After Mr . Brown went to be with his Savior, his wife and family wanted to remember him in a way that honored his faithfulness . They chose to create a scholarship that reflected his love for music .

“My dad loved conservative music,” shared his son, Dr . Dave Brown . “We want to see that same love instilled in the hearts of today’s young people .”

The family characterized ideal recipients as musicians who play and practice an instrument to the glory of God and use the abilities God has given them to serve in the local church . “Elmer had a profound impact on those around him,” said Mrs . Helena “Scotty” Brown . “We want to reward students who influence others, who are dedicated to sharing their musical gifts in the churches they attend .”

Kara Burgess, a 2012 recipient, was “honored to have a gracious donor help ease her financial burden,” she shared . Kara found her commitment to biblical music standards was strengthened as

she worked hard to be worthy of the scholarship’s description and purpose, a goal of the Brown family . “We believe this scholarship helps challenge students to uphold conservative music standards in the midst of an adverse culture,” shared Brown .

The Browns felt Maranatha was a fitting institution for the scholarship because family members were already deeply vested in the college and in the lives of its students . The entire Brown family finds it “incredibly gratifying that there are those who have upheld my father’s vision,” commented Brown .

“This investment is meant to carry on even after Elmer Brown’s immediate family members are gone,” Brown stated . “My full-time ministry is coming to a close within the next 20 years . The youthful recipients of this scholarship have an entire lifetime of ministry ahead of them .”

byeRs-pRice memoRial scholaRship“I remember as a child seeing my father and mother opening God’s Word during their daily devotions,” said Dr . Terry Price . “My wife, Colene, shares the same story . We’ve been blessed with a Christian upbringing .” Colene’s father was a pastor, and Terry’s parents served as lay church leaders . Both served God with great fervency in the local church .

But neither set of parents had this enthusiasm for the cause of Christ while growing up . A godly influence was not present in their homes until God changed their lives and they became first-generation Christians as young adults .

Colene’s parents were saved before they were married . They met at Moody Bible Institute, where their love, passion for Christian service, and personal relationship with God deepened . Terry’s parents were on the brink of divorce when salvation came to their home . A passionate desire for God quickly followed and both parents became dedicated servants of God in the local church .

Colene’s father was a head pastor who shepherded the congregation through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word . Colene’s mother filled an active role as pastor’s wife and

became a selfless servant, involving herself in all areas of the church . Terry’s father served as a deacon, and both parents became involved in teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, visitation, and neighborhood Bible clubs . The Price family was at church any time the doors were open .

To honor the memory of both sets of parents, the Prices established the Byers-Price Memorial Scholarship . Its purpose is to give young people the ability to continue their service to God in local church ministry .

Students, especially those going into full-time ministry, often leave college with tremendous debt that takes a long time to pay off . The purpose of the Byers-Price Memorial Scholarship is to be a financial blessing as well as an encouragement to students who God has directed to vocational ministry .

Scholarship recipient David Anderson shared, “The scholarship helped me achieve my goal of getting an undergraduate degree so I could move on to grad school . It assisted me financially, enabling me to strive more effectively toward my educational goals .”

lee jason kRuegeR memoRial scholaRshipLee Krueger’s legacy of a strong faith will now be a blessing to those who spend every day encouraging young people to make that kind of faith their own .

“One of Lee’s doctors said, ‘I’ve never met a young man with such strong faith who depended on the Lord like he did,’ ” said Loren Krueger, Lee’s father .

Tricia Krueger, Lee’s wife, said health workers who cared for her husband before he died in 1999 still talk about him . “His faith and his peace amazed them,” she said .

Others will remember Lee Krueger for many years to come, thanks to his parents having established the Lee Jason Krueger Memorial Scholarship at Maranatha . The scholarship will go to a Teacher Education major entering their junior or senior year .

Loren and Lila Krueger wanted to create a fitting memorial to their son, who told them he believed the Lord was leading him to work as a business manager at a Bible college . The Onalaska, Wisconsin, native attended Pillsbury Baptist Bible College for two years, then enrolled at UW-LaCrosse to finish pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Economics .

During his first semester there, he developed soreness in his lower leg that was later diagnosed

as osteogenic sarcoma, a type of bone cancer . He spent four-and-a-half years bravely fighting the disease and its negative effects . Two years into that battle, he married Tricia Buhrow, one of his best friends from high school . Tricia had earned an associate’s degree in Secretarial Science at Maranatha, graduating in 1996 . “I think this scholarship is a great thing,” Tricia said . “Lee was very supportive of Bible colleges .”

Loren Krueger, a retired Trane air conditioning products designer, said the youngest of his four children was a talented pianist and an excellent student . Two of his sisters earned education degrees at Pillsbury, helping give Lee a concern for education and educators .

“Lee was a quiet, studious guy who would blend in with the crowd so well you wouldn’t know he was there,” Loren said . “He wasn’t afraid to talk about the Lord, though . Every one of those nurses who helped care for him had been witnessed to . They didn’t have to be around him long before he would start sharing his faith with them .”

The scholarship was established and first awarded in the spring of 2012 . The first recipient was Courtney Goodvin . Half of the scholarship money will be awarded in the fall semester, and the other half in the following spring semester .

elbeRt m. Dean memoRial scholaRshipNamed for a man whose hands were ready to serve and whose heart was sensitive to God’s leading, the Elbert M . Dean Memorial Scholarship encourages an upperclassman enrolled in missions to stay focused on the goal of sharing the Good News with a lost world .

“Al (as everyone knew him) always invited missionaries into our home for meals or lodging,” said his wife of sixty years, Mrs . Janna Dean . “Spending time with missionaries enriched our lives and increased our burden to support and pray for them .”

Al served as a deacon and on the school board at Faith Baptist Church in Sterling, Illinois . For more than forty years, he taught adult Sunday school and cared for the church building and grounds . As treasurer for Baptist International Evangelistic Ministries for sixteen years, he demonstrated a love for the people of Russia, Ukraine, and other European countries . It was a love that knew no bounds .

“In the 80s, he went to Mexico on a short-term mission trip, and while he was there, he led a man to the Lord who eventually became pastor of the church,” Mrs . Dean shared . Al sought ways to be a blessing on the trip, making a mattress for a young girl who needed a bed and working on wiring to provide an electrical outlet in a family’s house . “The family had one outlet in the house—that was it . Al added another in the kitchen,” Mrs . Dean explained . “He found joy in doing little things like that .”

For 40 years Al owned and operated Al’s Upholstery, and his business became his mission

field . “He kept a tract rack on the counter and as opportunities came up, he witnessed to his customers,” Mrs . Dean said . “I knew if he was late coming home from work, he was talking to someone about the Lord . One day, he witnessed to two young men who told my husband he was crazy . Ten years later, those two men came back and shared how they had been saved and thanked Al for being faithful .”

The Dean family has been connected to Maranatha Baptist University since the early 70s . “We first met Dr . Cedarholm when he spoke at our church,” said Mrs . Dean . “He influenced our decision to send our children to Maranatha .” Early on, Al saw needs at the college he could meet . Through his business, he contributed the first gymnasium floor cover, a cover for the football scoreboard for weather protection, and a red velvet cover for the grand piano given by Mrs . Ruth Hey .

The Deans have three sons as well as two grandchildren who graduated from Maranatha, and a third grandchild will graduate in May 2014 . Al’s son, Michael Dean, has served on the Board of Trustees for twenty-five years .

The Elbert M . Dean Memorial Scholarship is a fitting tribute for a man who exemplified a fervent heart for missions . The Dean family established the scholarship in 2013 to assist a junior or senior preparing to serve the Lord in foreign missions or cross-cultural studies . The annual scholarship amount is $1,000
