SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION

Squamish community businesses and organizations have been most generous and supportive of the Howe Sound Secondary Class of 2020. Over 100 opportunities are available that recognize the value of continuing education and the skills and interests of Squamish graduates. This booklet identifies the many local opportunities that are being offered to assist you with making your post-secondary education dreams a reality.

Please carefully read and apply the following important information to help ensure the success of your application(s) for scholarships, awards or bursaries:

CITIZENSHIP: All successful applicants must be either Canadian citizens or landed immigrants/permanent residents unless specifically noted in the criteria. READ THE CRITERIA FOR EACH ITEM CAREFULLY. Be certain that your letter of application addresses the specific criteria for each particular scholarship/award as clearly as possible. For example, if the criteria includes “citizenship qualities”, then you must identify how you have demonstrated citizenship qualities during your secondary school tenure. If the criteria states “Preference will be given to a student pursuing a career in the tourism industry”, you should briefly explain why you have an interest in that area and suggest how you plan to achieve your goal. Any relevant experience should also be included in your application. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POSSIBLE SUCCESS OF YOUR APPLICATIONS or your achievements, interests, and accomplishments. Each year, some awards are not given out because no one has applied. COMPLETING APPLICATIONS

• Use a separate application form for each award. • Include Award Code (code at the start of each award name), i.e. 2-ES. • Do not put applications/letter of references in envelopes. Make sure they are attached directly to your application. • On the application form, be sure to indicate the scholarship for which you are applying, the basis on which you

qualify, and the institution you will be attending or have applied to. • Use the correct forms. Applications on incorrect forms will be disqualified.

INTERNAL SELECTION – These selections are made by the HSS Selection Committee. Transcripts are not required. EXTERNAL SELECTION – If you wish to attach a separate resume package, you must do one for each application. These selections are made by the donor. Additional application forms, if specified in the criteria, will be available online through our website. All external selection applications must be printed single-side only and attached with a paper clip (no staples). Applications that are not submitted in this manner will be returned to the applicant or incomplete packages may be sent to donors. SCHOLARSHIP: a scholarship is a monetary honour based on academic merit or excellence in the area set out in the criteria. BURSARY: a bursary is a monetary honour based on demonstrated financial need as well as satisfactory academic achievement. AWARD: a monetary honour based on criteria as defined by the donor. REQUESTING TRANSCRIPTS – Transcripts can be downloaded from the Student Transcript Service (STS) located on the Ministry of Education’s Transcript and Certificate webpage at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/transcript. REQUESTING REFERENCE LETTERS – Please complete the reference letter request form available on the HSS Scholarship webpage. Teachers required a minimum of five working days’ notice to process reference letter requests.
