BRIGHT FUTURES

Initial Eligibility

Bright Futures eligibility is determined at the high school level. Students should meet with their guidance counselor beginning in 9th grade to see what the requirements are.

Renewal Eligibility

Is determined by the State based on the student’s GPA and completed number of credits at the end of Spring semester.

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTSMust be degree seeking. Awards cannot be determined if a major has not been selected.

Enroll in a minimum of six non-remedial semester hours (or the equivalent in quarter/clock hours) per term to receive funding. However, if a student has less than six semester hours to graduate or six semester hours remaining on his/her scholarship the student may receive funding. Student should let financial aid know if this is the case.

A student may choose to receive funding for one or both terms during the academic year (Fall & Spring). SUMMER TERMS ARE NOT FUNDED. Students can delay receiving Bright Futures, but must contact OSFA directly.

Page 8: SCHOLARSHIPS Presented by: Sasha Ramirez-Acosta. WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Scholarships Financial Aid Office State Programs Institutional Scholarships

RESTRICTIONS OF BRIGHT FUTURES FUNDINGMaximum of 45 semester hours per academic year.

No remedial (developmental) course work will be funded.

The length of the scholarship is now based on the year the student graduated from high school. (Scholarships usually cover at least 100% of the program.)

BRIGHT FUTURES AWARDS

Awards are forwarded to the school around July 1 of each year (and are loaded on a weekly basis thereafter).

Awards are per credit hour and the per credit hour amount is determined by the State.

Gold Seal no longer covers AA transfer degrees. (Starting 2012-2013 recipients)

IRSC enters estimated amount for awards.

Student can print schedules or go online to see what portion of their fees are covered and what they are required to pay.

WITHDRAWALS

Students are required to repay funds received for dropped/withdrawn hours. Note: At IRSC, Bright Futures students are unable to withdraw online.

Students are not required to complete credits they have repaid.

A hold will be placed on students records until funds are repaid.

If funds are not repaid by the end of Spring term, student’s Bright Futures will not be renewed for the next academic year.

GRADES AND HOURS

Automatically submitted at the end of every Spring semester

Some Bright Futures students are able to use Summer Grades and Hours to help them renew their scholarships, but this is not case for all students. Students need to verify their eligibility to use Summer Grades and Hours through OSFA

Students must request their summer grades and hours be submitted to the state by completing a Bright Futures Re-evaluation Form. This form is located on the IRSC Financial Aid Website, and needs to be submitted to Sasha Ramirez-Acosta.

Page 14: SCHOLARSHIPS Presented by: Sasha Ramirez-Acosta. WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Scholarships Financial Aid Office State Programs Institutional Scholarships

RESTORATION & APPEALS

If students fail to meet the required grades and hours, they will lose their Bright Futures scholarship eligibility.

Some students may be able to apply for scholarship restoration, depending on their HS graduation year, and why they lost their scholarship (i.e. GPA). Scholarship restoration means the student loses their scholarship for the upcoming academic year. Student must take classes (and pay for them out of pocket or using other funding), and then submit their grades and hours to OSFA at the end of the Spring term. OSFA will re-evaluate their eligibility, and can restore the student’s scholarship.

Students can submit a petition for reinstatement for Bright Futures if there is a verifiable illness or emergency that occurred to the student directly. Students would submit a Scholarship & Loan Appeal, with relevant documentation, and the Scholarship & Loan Committee will make a recommendation. This recommendation will then be forwarded to OSFA for final approval.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Students can only use their Bright Futures at one school at a time.If the student is a transient student, they can receive Bright Futures for all courses being taken, but payment must be made by the student’s home school.

Students can switch their school mid-year, by changing their school of record through OSFA.

Students who have multiple forms of partial payment need to confirm their fees are paid. Our finance system does not take partial payments, so when two partial payments are applied to a student’s account (i.e. Florida Prepaid and Bright Futures, or Foundation Scholarship and Bright Futures) the fees do not get covered, and the student can be dropped for nonpayment.

To confirm they have a zero balance, student print their schedule to confirm their fees are paid.
