School Motto ReliabilityFROM THE PRINCIPAL Eagles Cup Well done to the Year 5 and 6 students who participated in the Eagles Cup match on Monday afternoon against Bluff Point. The Bluff Point oval was very small which suited their style of play. It was great to see our children out there having a go right to the end. A big thankyou to ex-student Jono Black who has been umpiring all our home games. It is fantastic to see him supporting his old school. The last game is next week; however, our opposition may not be available so we will inform parents as soon as we can confirm the game. Spelling Bee Congratulations to all the students who represented Mount Tarcoola at the Midwest Spelling Bee last Friday. All our children performed very well. They all made it quite high up in each division, the year 6 children even had to move onto the Year 9 spelling list. Isaac Gamble in Year 3 was the standout speller, winning his division. Isaac then teamed with Rhayssa Heseltine to win the Year 3 team event as well. Lapathon We are all looking forward to the Lapathon which is following the Rooms 17 and 8 assembly this Friday. This is a fantastic fundraiser and lots of fun. Parents please make sure that the children are only seeking sponsorship from family and close friends. We do not expect children to be door knocking to seek sponsorship. Parents and family are allowed to participate in the Lapathon as well! Book Week Dont forget it is Book Week next week. We will be having our dress up and parade on Wednesday. This year the theme is Reading is My Secret Power”. The theme allows children to dress up as their favourite book character. Parents are welcome to come in for the parade which will be on at 9.00am in the Undercover Area. Student Attendance It has been great to see the majority of the flu epidemic pass and hopefully moving into Spring the weather will begin to warm up. Parents are able to use our School Stream App and the attendance link on the school website to inform the school of their childs absence as well as traditional notes, verbal conversations with teachers and phone calls. It is a requirement by law for parents to provide schools with a reasonable reason for student absence. We are happy to say that the majority of parents do this regularly. Our attendance rate for Semester 1 was comparable to the state average and almost identical to this time last year. This is surprising given how extensively the flu virus hit us this year. School Council Training The planned School Council training event did not go ahead and has been postponed until Term 4. We are still really keen to go ahead with this training and will look to promote it more widely across the Geraldton region. Paul Luxton Principal

P&C NEWS All students from Kindy to Year 6 will be invited to enjoy music and games at our next disco in Term 4. Students have enjoyed these P&C run events—keep an eye out for announcements of dates in the newsletters. Term 3 will be busy with school run athletic events and the P&C will conduct the ever popular fundraiser, the Year 1—6 Lapathon on Friday 1 6th August between 1 :30 & 2:50pm. Notes and sponsor sheets were sent home via students on Monday 29th July. Students can come dressed up as their favourite sports star or wear crazy hair. This is a great opportunity to get in some steps in the sun and raise money too! All parents/carers are most welcome to come along to the event and walk some laps. Mr Ian Blayney has again generously offered a Giant bicycle which will be first prize in a one day raffle. 2019 will be a time of transitioning the uniform supply to Total Uniforms, with all sales being conducted by them from January 2020. They have a store in Geraldton and have confirmed they will be able to stock our current items year round. This will give families the option of purchasing fewer items at times that are convenient for them. Please be aware that as this time approaches stock at the school will be increasingly limited. The 2nd hand uniform shop has been very popular and the P&C will continue to operate it as a service to our families. We are always happy to receive donations of uniforms, please deliver them to the canteen.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPLAIN

Did you know that July 30th was International Friendship Day? Friendship Day celebrates the special bond between friends and the strength and power of their friendship.

As parents we can help kids make and keep friends by fostering; Empathy, perspective-taking, and empathic concern Conversational skills Emotional self-control A willingness to compromise and offer help A willingness to share, take turns, and follow rules

We can also: Model good friendship behaviour. Focus on characteristics that make a good friend. Talk to them about their own special qualities and how to recognize others' unique gifts. Teach them to treat others only as they'd want to be treated themselves Talk about friendship expectations – appreciate friends for what they could offer, without expecting more. Teach conflict resolution. Talk about popularity versus friendship quality.
