beginning to explore connections and develop the awareness that they are citizens of the world.

Though their homes may differ, children around the world share cozy bedtime rituals.

Peek into an inquisitive grizzly cub’s day as she learns to fish for salmon. Young readers will cheer for Katmai, the smallest of the cubs, as we follow her adventures. Incredible photos show how wild bears eat, learn and play as their mother protects and feeds them. The result? A beautiful introduction

to an at-risk species, and a wonderful story celebrating the love between parent and children.“Behind the Lens” pages give insight into the magic of these images. The salmon spawning season is very short and most photographers would be reluctant to get so close to bears during this time. As soon as Barrett saw the family, he abandoned all other photo opportunities to focus on them. To see a grizzly mom with four cubs in the wild is almost unheard of. Thanks to his eye, deep knowledge and respect for the wildlife he photographs, young readers will witness magnificent scenes in nature that most of us would never have a chance to experience.

It’s breakfast time and Donovan knows exactly what he wants! Not eggs, not pancakes, not cereal. No, what he wants is BEAR, just like his grandfather used to eat for breakfast! So Donovan sets off to bag a bear of his own, going on an adventurous hunt through the woods where he follows and is followed by an ant, a squirrel and a dog. When Donovan finally meets a real, big and GROWLING bear, he quickly learns that sometimes breakfast tastes best when it doesn’t have any teeth!

This story was inspired by Donovan, a first-grader in La Loche, Saskatchewan, a Dene community that Robert Munsch visited. When Robert asked what the kids liked to eat, Donovan said that he liked to eat BEAR!

Donovan is hungry for a special kind of breakfast . . . Bear!
