Dear Parents and Carers
STUDENT REPORTS FOR SEMESTER ONE
Students will receive their Semester One Report next week. The report provides a
summary of student progress over the past two terms.
Following is a summary of the main elements of the semester one student reports.
Student reports, Kindergarten to Year Six, contain information on student progress
in each key learning area (KLA). The KLAs are English, Mathematics, Science,
Human Society and its Environment, Creative Arts, Personal Development/Health/
Physical Education.
All reports K-6 provide information or indicators regarding the specific learning
content or skills for each KLA for the semester.
K-6 Reports contain a general comment summarising student achievement, a
review of your child’s social and work habits, and information on attendance.
YEARS 2- 6 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Last week’s Athletics Carnival was a very successful event, with students setting new
personal best records, showing their perseverance and willingness to have a go, and
great teamwork.
The remaining field events will be completed at school (once the weather improves) and
the winning sports house will be announced.
Thank you to Kris and her team of wonderful volunteers who cooked and served
hundreds of sausages and cakes for students, staff and parents.
Thank you also to the team of teachers who organized the carnival and all staff who
worked hard on the day to manage the events.

STRONG MINDS
This week’s character strength is GRATITUDE.
Gratitude means appreciating what you have and being thankful when good things happen.
The following fact sheet provides some tips which parents may use to encourage their child to use their strength of teamwork, at home, at school, in their after school and weekend activities.
We are all able to develop and use this strength with practice.

WHAT TO SAY?
Gratitude refers to being thankful for what you already have, and expressing thanks when good things happen.
“I am grateful for the beautiful weather we are having.”
“ I enjoy cooking for you when you are so grateful.”
“That was kind of Nanny to get you that gift, I’m glad you appreciate the effort that
went into that. She would have had to think about what you like, go to the shops, try
and find the right one and wrap it. That all takes a lot of thought and effort.”
“Remember to thank Haleema’s mum when she drops you home, it is very kind of her to
do that.”
At dinnertime put on some silly glasses – Gratitude Glasses and take turns stating three
things that you are grateful for from the day and why (try to encourage the focus to
be on people and experiences over things).
Write a note of thanks to someone in your community/school/family.
Remember to look for strengths in your children and praise them (counteract that
Negativity Bias, see below) - kindness in helping a sibling, fairness in sharing a toy,
perseverance with making their bed, prudence when crossing the road etc.
Teach your children how to go on the hunt for gratitude. “We’re going on a Gratitude
Hunt, I hope we catch lots of them, where can we look? At home, extended family,
community – library, pool, parks, at school – in the classroom, playground,
extracurricular activities?”
Role model gratitude by showing your children that you thank people for having you over
for dinner, sending a card etc.
WHAT TO DO?
WHAT TO READ? The Thankful Book by Todd Parr
SHADOW SIDE? When gratitude is offered to persuade someone to do something for you and is
in genuine.
FUN FACT? Gratitude counteracts the ‘Negativity Bias’ - the natural inclination for the brain to
focus more on negative events and to store these more quickly into long-term memory.
Research into gratitude has found that it increases optimism and improves physical
health.
(Emmons & McCullough 2003). ‘Children who practice grateful thinking have more
positive attitudes towards school and their families’ (Froh, Seflick & Emmons 2008).

1G have continued to create wonderful art based on the book
“Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. This wonderful story teaches the
children about the notion of not giving up, how to be creative and
take risks. Their challenge was to paint a dot picture using various
techniques. Here are a few of our fabulous artists!

Stage 3 News
Project Global Aid Showcase Invitation
Thursday 4th July (2:30pm-3:00pm)
On Thursday 4th July 2019, all parents and guardians are invited to attend Stage 3’s Project Global Aid Showcase from 2:30pm-3:00pm in the 6R, 5S, 5P and 5G classrooms.
Throughout this term, Year 5 and Year 6 students have been developing their understanding of our global society and the different connections we have with our neighbouring countries including the importance of Australian Aid. In conjunction with lessons on the United Nations Human Rights, and the global inequities present within our world, Stage 3 students have applied their Design Thinking and STEM skills to answer the following driving question; How can Australian Aid improve the quality of life of a child in a neighbouring country?
In response to this driving question, students have empathised with real life stories of children in neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, before defining and ideating solutions to the driving question by pinpointing problems to solve which would help improve a child’s access to water, food, shelter, clothing, education or health services.
The unit has concluded with students creating a prototype of their final solution using a medium of their choice, including recyclable materials, 3D modelling, 3D printing, robotics, websites and even paper mâché. These prototypes will be placed on display for parents to view as part of the student-run showcase on the afternoon of Thursday 4th July 2019 from 2.30pm.
Year 5 and 6 look forward to sharing their knowledge and STEM learning with an authentic audience in Week 10.
