When I arrived in Caceres in September last year it
wasn’t my first time living in Spain. 4 years ago I studied
in Zaragoza as an Erasmus student, and 2 years ago I had
worked as an Au Pair for a family in Madrid. However,
every time I come here I have a completely new
experience, and Caceres is certainly no exception.
Arriving in Caceres after an exhausting journey, carrying
my life in a suitcase, with no real idea of what to expect,
the striking sight of the old town and a beautiful sunset
was definitely a welcome one. I was quickly made to
feel very at home in the English Department (having 6
surrogate Spanish Mums probably helped) and slowly
got used to way things work here. For example, I’m not
sure I’ve ever managed to pay for one of the abundance
of coffees which I have had in the cafeteria. It is my aim
to one day perfect the art of insistence as the Spanish
seem to do so well. This method may not be as logical as
the English way of ‘going Dutch’ but certainly far more
entertaining. Coming from a large busy city it has taken
me a while to adapt to the pace of life in Caceres, but
I’ve definitely got there! In fact I’m now quite worried
about going back to England and not being able to take a
siesta in the middle of the working day, or my Mum
calling me for dinner at 6pm, and me wondering how the
day passed so quickly. However I think that the one thing
that kept me going even through the frustrating ‘mañana’
attitude and senseless paperwork which seems to come
with Spanish bureaucracy was my students at la Laboral.
I’m not going to lie, it definitely gives you a little ego
boost every time you walk in the classroom and they’re
excited to see you, and their energy was easy to work off.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching the students about my
country and my world and it’s been refreshing to hear
about theirs too and to discover their weird and
wonderful take on life. This has definitely been an
unforgettable experience and I would like to thank
everyone at la Laboral who has helped me through it and
bought so much to my year here.
