Kia ora tatou katoa,

This morning I awoke to a beautiful morning, almost ‘spring’ like. I decided not to go to the gym and sweat profusely but spend some time with my sister visiting from the deep south. However, she’s heading to 28 degrees on the Gold Coast so the novelty of brother sister love wore off pretty quickly. Summer can’t come quickly enough.

This week the Tui Team moved back into their newly renovated rooms with no internal walls, fresh carpet tiles and wall linings, it looks great. I also spotted the Air Conditioner compressor has arrived so we will have the latest heating and cooling technology for our littlies soon.

The Takahe Team have also been busy vacating their classes and moving to temporary rooms. We look forward to the sprucing up of the Takahe area.

This week we start ‘Reading Mileage’ essentially this is 20 of our best Year 6 students listening to 5 readers a day, that’s 100 in total! We need to have our children heard reading. The 100 children will travel from their rooms after their guided reading lesson with their teacher and head to room 5. There they will read again to a Year 6 person. This mirrors a concept in Maori called Tuakana Teina. In a school context this is interpreted as ‘older younger’. We are excited to see how this will roll and hopefully we can iron out the kinks early on.

Yesterday’s strike by teachers was necessary but unfortunate in my view. Teachers have an increasing workload and do deserve an increase in pay to reflect their hard work. However, I watched politicians yesterday babbling on about ‘we can work together and sort this out’ to 24 hours later change their tune to ‘it’s disappointing there needed to be a strike and teachers are dream-ing about their claim’ just goes to show that we may have a way to go before things are sorted. Whilst I enjoyed the company of my own children as we joined a local march, my kids said they just wanted to be at school. So, to the negotiating teams, get on with it!

Next week is the APS board of trustees meeting. You are most welcome to attend this ‘meeting in public’.

Tomorrow I will send out the first of a number of surveys. We are gathering information, particularly around our curriculum and how we might roll for 2019 and beyond. Please look out for these as we will have a number of prizes to encourage you to return these. I will report back the findings at our Art Show opening.

In the meantime, enjoy the semi break known as the weekend, Go the Warriors and a little encouragement to you all too pop out to a local market, Avondale, Mt Albert, Otara or where I’m going, Grey Lynn.

Cheers all Mr Clarke
