Welcome to our Week 8 newsletter!
TERM 3 SCHOOL RESUMES: Just a friendly reminder that students return to
school on Monday 17th July and continue to wear
their full winter school uniform.
FREE FURNITURE TO A GOOD HOME: We have two pieces of excess furniture going free
to a good home – open cupboards suitable for
storage or a workspace (please see pictures
below). If you feel that you could use one or both
of them please contact Mr Sutherland or Mrs
Gracie – PH: 96292518.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTS: School reports should arrive home from Thursday
29th June. This is a great opportunity to share and
celebrate the achievements of your child/ren for
the first two terms of school.
SCHOOL GATES: We are experiencing some gate issues. Apologies
if you have been ‘caught out’ where the gates
should be open and they are shut. We have had
technicians out to fix this issue, but it seems to be
persisting. Thank you for your patience with this
matter!
BICYCLES AND SCOOTERS: Please assist us to keep our
school a safe space by walking
your bicycle/scooter to and
from the school’s front gates.
Any child who rides either a
bicycle or scooter should be
wearing a helmet.
WINTER UNIFORM AND ACCESSORIES: Please ensure that your child’s school jacket is
labelled with their full name, as the Lost Property
pile seems to be growing daily!
For continued pride in our school and our school
uniform, just a reminder – girls’ hair accessories
should reflect our school colours of dark and light

ENROLLING NOW FOR 2018: It’s now time to enrol your Kindergarten child for
2018! Our ‘Orientation Program’ begins in
October. For your child to be placed in an
Orientation Group, it is important to enrol your
child by September.
If you have a sibling who will be starting with us
next year, could you please assist the school by
either downloading an enrolment form through
the Department of Education and Communities
website – www.det.nsw.edu.au or by collecting
one from the school’s Administration Office and
returning it as soon as possible.
To enrol, you need to complete an enrolment
form and provide original copies of your child’s
birth certificate, proof of address (such as a rates
notice or rental agreement) and immunisation
documents.
OPEN DAY: On Thursday 3rd August (Term 3, Week 3), our
school will be hosting our annual ‘Open Day’ as
part of Education Week.
A flyer about this day and the events taking place
has been included in our newsletter. On this day,
we will also be including a, ‘Book Week Parade’
for students in K-6. A note about this event was
sent home last week. It is also on our school’s
website.
Please return your child’s ‘Book Week Parade’ slip
to their classroom teacher by Friday 21st July to
assist your child’s teacher with preparing their sign
to use throughout the parade.
Students are currently creating their artworks for
our artwork showcase! Artworks will be on sale for
$5 on the day.
Have a lovely weekend with your family!

STEWART HOUSE CLOTHING DRIVE: The Stewart House
clothing drive has been a
great success! Thank you
to all our families for
donating unwanted
clothes. Your donations
will certainly benefit
children and families in
disadvantaged
communities.
DEBATING SUCCESS: I had the pleasure of taking four of our students;
Lara (Year 3), Nikhita (Year 4), Faith (Year 5) and
Swara (Year 6) to Matthew Pearce Public School
for the ‘District Final Multicultural Competition’ on
Tuesday.
These girls won their grade final of the Multicultural
Public Speaking Competition held at school and
were then selected to represent Parklea at the
‘District Final’.
The girls presented their same speech and were
also given a topic unrelated to multiculturalism. All
students were outstanding and were
commended by the judges. Well done girls!
Below is a recount of Lara’s time participating in
this competition:
On Tuesday the 13th of June 2017, myself and
three other students from Parklea Public School
attended the ‘NSW Multicultural Perspectives
Public Speaking Competition’ at Mathew Pearce
Public School.
At the Public Speaking Competition, we all had to
perform our prepared speeches. My prepared
speech went very well, and so did Swara’s,
Nikhita’s and Faith’s.
After this, we were presented with a topic for our
Impromptu speeches, where Nikita and I were
given 5 minutes to prepare a 1 minute speech.
Our topic was ‘Holidays’. My impromptu speech
went very well and the adjudicator really enjoyed
it.
Unfortunately, none of us made it through to the
next round, but we still all did an amazing job and
had fun doing it. We got a participation
certificate! The best part was the spectacular
food we were offered! It was a really fun day and
I made HEAPS of friends. This is an experience I will
never forget.
P.S. – Thank you Mrs. Hack for driving me to and
from the venue!

HOW DO YOU FEEL? CONFRONTING!
DISGUSTING! Eww!
STINKS! GROSE!
SAD! AWFUL! VERY
BAD! This is not
good! These are some of
the words the
students
responded with in
how they felt
about the waste
display collected
by our lovely
cleaners; Nancy
and Vicki throw into the dumpster for us each
day. The rubbish sprawled from the tree heading
toward the stormwater drain is eye opening…
The next question for our school community is:
What can we do in tackling our school’s, ‘War on
Waste’?

Teacher Librarian
RAFTER AND PERKINS CAKE STALL: On Thursday 3RD August (Open Day), RAFTER AND
PERKINS will be hosting their CAKE STALL for our
students and families.
Just a friendly reminder…when there is a ‘sports
house’ cake stall, we ask that students bring in
something to sell at the cake stall if they are in that
‘sports house’. So, RAFTER AND PERKINS students,
it’s your turn!!!
Please remember that we have many students in
our school with allergies. Therefore, please avoid
any food with traces of nuts and clearly label your
cakes if they contain the following; eggs, wheat
or any gluten. A flyer about RAFTER AND PERKINS’
Cake Stall has been included in our newsletter!
MARY POPPINS MUSICAL AT GLENWOOD HIGH
SCHOOL: Stage 3 had the pleasure of attending the ‘Mary
Poppins Musical’ at Glenwood High School on
Thursday 16th June.
Narrated by the lovable chimney sweep Bert, the
musical had an array of favourite songs,
including; Spoon Full of Sugar, The Perfect Nanny,
Stay Awake, Jolly Holiday, Chim Chim Cher-ee,
and of course, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,
which the students loved singing along too.
Here are some quotes from the happy crowd:
“I loved the great energy and singing along to all
the songs” M.K
“Mary Poppins was awesome. The singing was
great and so were the actors.” Z.R
“The songs were very catchy, and the
decorations and lights were wonderful. I loved the
acting.” T.T
