When deciding if your child will buy school lunch or bring a packed lunch from home, consider the cost of packing versus buying lunch. The price of a school lunch in Maryland is between $2.25 and $2.90, depending on the school district. If your family qualifies, your child may receive a free lunch, or a reduced price lunch that costs just $0.40. School lunch is a great deal. Your child gets to choose foods from all five food groups. Imagine a school cafeteria is serving grilled chicken on a whole-wheat bun, oranges, steamed broccoli, and low-fat milk. If you were to make this meal at home, the ingredients for one meal would cost about $1.60. This might seem like a cheaper option than buying lunch. But if you pack this lunch for your child, you will also have to pay for condiments, napkins, and utensils, and the energy to required to refrigerate, cook, and transport the ingredients. You will also have to spend your valuable time buying ingredients, preparing the meal, and packing it up for your child. School lunch would be a bargain if you were packing the same thing served in the cafeteria. But packed lunches often include convenience foods such as chips, cookies, and pudding cups, which are more expensive and less healthy. Pre-boxed lunches sold in grocery stores usually do not include any whole fruits, vegetables, or whole grains, they almost always contain sweets, and they usually cost $2.75 or more. If you haven’t visited your school cafeteria lately, you may be surprised by the quality of the food being served at this low price. Make the most of school meals by: Returning your child’s Free and Reduced Meal (FARM) application complete and on time. Your child may receive a free or reduced-price meal—a real bargain! Reading the school menu each week with your child to select days she or he will buy lunch. Discussing the healthy items on the menu she or he enjoys. Encouraging your child to select from all of the food groups available at lunch. Prompting your child to choose fruits and vegetables at every meal. Finding out if you can join your child for lunch in the cafeteria. Remember: you are a role model! Speak positively about healthy foods and school lunch to your child.
