He is well known for the fact that he was the Caesar that ordered the census which led to Joseph and Maria travelling to Bethlehem where Jesus Christ, our Lord, was born. August is the eighth month in our calendar year and was named in honour of Augustus Caesar in 8 BC. Welcome to August 2019 AD ## . During the last few weeks the mercury fell below zero on one or two occasions and everybody was reminded of the fact that it is still winter. With the recent afternoon temperatures being in the mid-twenties, I hope you do not forget that the weather in our beloved country is among the best in the world. Talking about the ebbs and the flows of life, appreciate the basic things in life like good health, friends and family. Our registrar, Mr Ernst Raubenheimer, who underwent massive heart bypass surgery at the beginning of July, is recuperating well at home, and will be back in his office on Monday. To him and everyone out there battling with health issues, may our best wishes and prayers carry you and give you strength. Our revues are out of the blocks and all the best to every learner, teacher and parent for the hectic revue season lying ahead. Hats off to Midstream’s first and u/14 rugby sides who both are Blue Bulls champions and have qualified for the quarter-final of the Virsekerbeker competition after beating Hans Moore on Saturday. A special word of congratulations to our u/14, u/15 and u/16 girls’ hockey sides who were involved in play-offs on Tuesday and a salute to our u/15s who beat Hoërskool Pietersburg in Polokwane to qualify for their Noordvaal finals. Congratulations to every boy and girl who was elected to the Midstream Council. To those of you that missed out, Carpe Diem. You are invited to join the various sub-committees of the Council and make a difference. All the best to the new prefects, may you follow in the footsteps of Tishca, Jano and their team and lead Midstream towards an even brighter future. ## BCE (Before Common Era) and BC (Before Christ) mean the same thing - before year 1 CE (Common Era). This is the same as the year AD 1 (Anno Domini); the latter means “in the year of the Lord,” often translated as “in the year of our Lord.” GRADE 9 SUBJECT CHOICE INFORMATION EVENING Midstream College is hosting a grade 9 subject choice information evening in the hall on Wednesday, 7 August 2019 at 18:30. There will be an opportunity for parents to speak to the subject managers afterwards. It is of the utmost importance that all grade 9 learners and parents attend this meeting as learners will be handing in their final grade 10 subject choices on Monday, 12 August. PRESTIGE PRIZE-GIVING The Prestige Prize-giving will take place in the school hall at 19:00 on Monday, 21 October. Learners will receive their invitations at a later stage.

GRADE 12 ARRANGEMENTS The matrics have already received this letter with all important dates and arrangements for the rest of the year. For your convenience, it has also been posted on the website under academics/year planning.

LADIES’ EVENING A friendly invitation to all ladies to attend our Ladies’ Evening, which will take place in the school hall on 10 October 2019 at 18:30. This year we also have exhibitors exhibiting a variety of products from 17:30. The guest artist for the evening is the well-known singer, Ivan Roux. The matric girls will also have the opportunity to show the audience their matric farewell dresses. Tickets, at R150-00 per person, will be available from Ms Carine Cronje at the high school reception from Tuesday, 13 August. Light refreshments will be served.

Academics 2020 GRADE 12 IEB FINAL EXAMINATIONS The Independent Examinations Board has announced its examination fee of R7 115-00 per candidate for next year’s National Senior Certificate Examination. Additional subjects will be charged at R1 230-00 per subject and Advanced Programme Mathematics (APM) at R1 022-00. Current grade 11 parents are requested to budget for this, as your account will be debited accordingly next year.

Sport Both the first and u/14 rugby teams rewrote Midstream College’s record books by winning the Blue Bulls finals. Last Saturday, both teams won their qualifying round for the Virsekerbeker competition and will be involved in the quarter-finals of division 2 this weekend. We are equally proud of the first and u/14 boys’ hockey teams that played in the Noordvaal section B finals last week and ended third and fifth respectively. The u/14, u/15 and u/16 girls’ hockey teams were also involved in the play-offs for the Noordvaal competition. Congratulations to the girls’ squash team (Awande Malinga, Claudia Lock, Kiara Poole, Lara van Niekerk, Anja van der Merwe and Kiyari Mohan) that came seventh overall at the Top Schools tournament in Pietermaritzburg.
