CROSS COUNTRY- OFF AND RUNNING What a wonderful ‘weather’ month the cross-country
students had during the month of September! Thank you
to coaches Mrs. Waldbauer, Mrs. Ball, Miss Frick, Mrs.
Kirschman and intern Miss Rutzki for motivating the
students to diligently practice each day. The Cross Country
team has attended one meet to date and will attend the
Saltcoats Autumn Summit on Sept. 29. The team will also
attend the District Meet at Cherrydale on October 5th. We
commend our students for exhibiting excellent behaviour
and sportsmanship. The team is always respectful of the
meet sites by making sure garbage and recyclable
materials are deposited in the appropriate places. Way to
go team!
Although all students performed well and achieved some
personal bests at the meets, we would like to acknowledge
the following placements in their respective age
categories:
CHERRYDALE RESULTS- September 14
*BEGINNER BOYS- Mason Kittelson-3rd -(9:30)
*SNEAKER GIRLS- Summer McKay - 7th - (10:40)
Watch for the results of the Saltcoats meet and the District meet in the October newsletter.
As in past years, thanks to the dedication and involvement of Davison School staff, we are pleased to offer a number of clubs and activities for our students to take part in during the lunch period and after school. Below is just a sampling of clubs that already have been organized or will have a start date in October. **S.R.C. – Becoming a member of the S.R.C. teaches cooperation, responsibility and commitment and these students will certainly be tomorrow’s leaders. Thank you to the many students who applied to become part of the S.R.C. Thank you to Mrs. Waldbauer and Ms. Molaro who are the teacher advisors for the S.R.C. Be sure to watch for a number of initiatives from this talented group. **WRITERS’ CLUB – Students in grades 5-6 who have an interest in writing were invited to become part of the Writers’ Club. Members will meet to write poems, paragraphs and stories that will then be entered in contests and publications. Over the past years members of the Writing Club have been recognized provincially and nationally for their submissions to various contests and publications. We are sure this trend will continue under the tutelage and encouragement from Ms. Molaro. GIRL POWER- The ‘Girl Power’ club has proven to be extremely popular since its inception a few years ago. Mrs. Waldbauer and Mrs. Unterschute spearhead this club where girls in grades 5 & 6 have the opportunity to come together to discuss a number of girl issues and topics. We know the club will strengthen the girls’ self-esteem and confidence, as well as empower them to become healthy young adults in mind, body and spirit.

The busy month of September has flown by and
summer vacation seems a distant memory as students
and staff have developed routines and expectations
during this first month of school.
It’s an exciting time for children (and parents) who are
just beginning their educational journey. We welcome
you to Davison School and look forward to meeting and
getting to know you throughout the school year.
For those of you who are new to Davison School, and/or
to the community of Melville, we welcome you to our
school family.
After lunch on September 5, the whole school
congregated in the gym. Miss Nashiem welcomed
everyone back for an exciting school year and then
read ‘How to Get a Teacher Ready for School”. She
also reviewed ‘SALAMI’ with the students as well as
other school procedures.

School!
**GREEN CLUB: The Green Club, under the direction of Mrs. Waldbaue,r has been organized and is busy recycling throughout the school. We try to encourage our students to help save our planet and environment, by following the 3 R’s.
If you have a child/children interested in joining any of these clubs, please have them speak to the teacher in charge.

Thank you for attending our OPEN HOUSE on September 27. We trust you had a chance to visit with the staff, as well as hear some important information from your child’s/children’s teachers regarding expectations and classroom procedures for the year. We appreciate that you viewed this as an important information evening and thank you for attending.
We are happy to have a visible and vibrant School Community Council at
Davison School and we know they are always pleased to welcome new members into the fold. Meetings are held once a month at Davison School and we encourage you to attend the Annual General Meeting on November 14 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Please feel free to pick up an informational brochure on the role and responsibilities of the S.C.C. on the bulletin board located in the hallway to the right of the office prior to the next meeting date. Consider getting involved.

During the past few years, the grade six classrooms have
volunteered at Rail City Industries to interact with the clients and
through a number of activities have made lasting relationships.
They are pleased to continue this relationship this school year and
look forward to another year of interaction and getting to know
the clients. To help celebrate over 35 years of success at Rail City
the grade 601 and 5/6 classrooms attended the Rail City Street
fair on September 13. Students enjoyed games of chance as well
as a hot dog lunch. Local dignitaries were on hand to bring
greetings and congratulations to Rail City on raising funds to
purchase a new van for the clients. When the community supports
one another and comes together, great things can happen!
ORANGE SHIRT DAY
To acknowledge the residential school
survivors, staff and students were
encouraged to wear orange on Sept.
28. Davison School welcomed
Andrew Quewezance, the cultural
liaison with GSSD. Andrew shared his
personal story with the students and
provided insight into the plight of the
children in the Residential Schools. By
keeping the dialogue open, this day
gives First Nations, local governments,
schools and communities a chance to
come together in the spirit of
reconciliation and hope for generations
of children to come.

DID YOU KNOW……….
One of the most important
things your child can do to
achieve academic success is
also one of the most basic:
going to school every day. In
fact, research has shown that
your child’s attendance record
may be the biggest factor
influencing her/his academic
success!
INFORMATION GALORE………………….
The updated Davison School handbook is now
available on our website: www.dav.ca. The
handbook has valuable information and quite
probably the answers to any school related
question you might have. Be sure to check it
out!

Our first monthly ‘Pep Rally’ was held on
Monday, September 25. The monthly pep
rallies are now family group oriented with
activities done in the cross-graded family
groups. We encourage and welcome
parents and family members to join us as we
focus on building school spirit and a sense of
school community. Our five values are still in
the forefront of our school and awards will
be given based on those values during the
year end awards program in June.
TERRY FOX WALK/RUN – The legacy of the Terry Fox Walk/Run continues every year with the “Marathon of Hope”. Although sunny skies did not prevail (it was cool and blustery) staff and students persevered and held the annual Terry Fox Walk on Friday, September 15. Thank you to parents, family members and neighbours for joining us and for your generous donations to the Terry Fox Foundation. A total of $258.00 was forwarded to the Terry Fox Foundation. Thank you also to the cross country coaches for coordinating the Terry Fox Walk and the team members for leading the walk.
