The yearly event is an opportunity for many stall orders to take part and sell their wares, while students get involved by organising children’s games and competitions as well as assisting Santa Claus.

Parents and teachers also helped with selling raffle tickets, cakes, food and mulled wine. Staff and students from our Espiche site took part in the event.

All proceeds from the Bazaar go to ‘Casa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição’. It was wonderful to observe a group of girls from the home visit the Bazaar. They had a great time at Santa’s Grotto and joining in all the fun and games.

The funds raised will ensure that the children’s home in Portimão has its meat bill paid for a year. Fantastic achievement in such austere times.

The Social Solidarity Association of the International School of the Algarve (ASSDEIA) has been supporting the ‘Casa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição’ for the last 4 years. The International School of the Algarve would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all their help and continued support.

Christmas Bazaar Fundraising Success

On Saturday 30th November, the International School of the Algarve held its annual Christmas Bazaar. It raised !2.449.99 EUR for a girls’ home in Portimão (‘Casa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição’).

Pas de la Casa, Andorra Snow Trip with the School’s Sports Club

One week of fun and sport activity in one of the largest ski areas in Europe is the annual proposal of the Sports Club of the International School of the Algarve (CDEIA), which in December took a group of 67 people, mostly school students, for a fantastic holiday in the snow. The destination of the snow trip was Pas de la Casa, one of the six ski resorts in Grandvalira, Andorra. The trip was held between 7th and 14th December, a strategically chosen week because it is prior to the Christmas holidays rush to the snow. During the week there was not one single cloud in the sky. Our students benefited from extraordinary conditions for skiing: prime quality snow and few skiers on the slopes. The mornings were devoted to ski lessons (at various levels) and the afternoons to skiing the wonderful slopes of Grandvalira. The program included good meals, daily swimming, a surprise dinner on the mountain top and a stop in the Caldeia thermal pools in Andorra-a-Velha before the return trip to Portugal.

‘Newton’s Disc’ is a circle with seven colours. Rotating the disc on an axis the colours start to merge and create the illusion of white. With the help of the Secondary School visitors students from Year 1 built several devices and enjoyed themselves, amazed by the illusions caused. At the end of the demonstration, the students from Year 1 received ‘EIA Science Kits’ with the necessary materials to repeat the two experiments at home.

!

‘Matchstick Cinema’ and ‘Newton’s Disc’ were the two experiments prepared by the Secondary students for their young friends. The first experiment recreated a thaumatrope: two paper discs glued on a matchstick with different pictures on each side, which when rotated create the impression of a single image, a phenomenon called retinal persistence.

Students from Year 11 Physics and Chemistry and Year 12 Physics of the National Section visited the Year 1 classroom on the last day of classes before the Christmas holidays, December 16h, to present two scientific experiments about color and image and to awaken the interest for science amongst their youngest colleagues.
