Parents and students are reminded to bring warmer clothing and a rain jacket to school. Students are permitted to stay inside when it is

raining heavily but in the event of light rain or shower, the children will likely be going outside. Fresh air and physical activity allows the children to focus and concentrate following the break times. SCHOOL LIBRARY OPEN

All students have an opportunity to exchange their books and access resources weekly. However, if

parents or children would like to browse or access the library, it will be open on most days between 2:30 PM and 2:45 PM.

The fall book fair was a great success this year with $5000 in sales! Thank you to Wendy Lam for coordinating the event and to the

many volunteers who helped out. A list of volunteers is included at the end of this page. The next book fair will be in February. EVENING WINTER CONCERTS ON DECEMBER 1ST, 7TH & 15TH

All classes will be performing at one of the three winter concerts in December beginning at 7:00 PM. Mr. Brouwer will be coordinating and preparing the school bands and classroom performances. Due to fire regulations and the size of the school, each class will perform at one of the concerts. More details about the concert schedule will be announced in a couple of weeks. BREAKFAST CLUB ON MONDAY MORNINGS AT 7:45 – 8:15 AM

The breakfast program is open to all students in Grades 1-7 and is coordinated by Hailey

from the Hamilton community center and Mr. Hoath at the school. Students can come and have a free breakfast, socialize and play board games. Come next week Mr. Hoath is serving super healthy breakfast sandwiches. GR. 6/7 VOLLEYBALL GAMES BEGIN WEEK OF OCTOBER 24TH Students are reminded to return your permission forms to Mr. Hoath’s box outside his office. The weekly game schedule will be posted outside the front office. Please note there will be a tournament on November 30th. REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLY NOVEMBER 10TH AT 10:45 AM

their uniforms. SCHOOL RECYCLING PROGRAM

The Richmond School District has a number of recycling initiatives in an effort to reduce the amount of waste and garbage including

organic waste. Students are learning about the program and what each recycling container should contain. The district recycles juice boxes, cans, bottles, plastics, glass, metal and

organic material at all sites. Previously, the school encouraged students to bring their garbage home but we would now like students to bring plastic containers for lunches and actively use the recycling system and dispose of garbage at school. GRADE 5 ACTIVE PASS PROGRAM The 2016/2017 Grade 5 Active Pass is now available. The pass is available to all Richmond students registered in Grade 5, including those home-schooled or attending private schools. Each pass includes FREE admission to:

• Drop-in swimming at Watermania and Minoru Aquatic Centres

• Drop-in public skating at Richmond Ice Centre and Minoru Arenas (skate rentals are extra)

• West Richmond Pitch & Putt with a paying adult

• Various drop-in programs at local community centres

It's also simple to register! Grade 5 students just need to bring their birth certificate or passport showing they are 10 years old as of December 31, 2016; and proof of residency to the Hamilton Community center. GRADE 6/7 OUTDOOR EDUCATION MEETING AT 6:00 PM & GRADE 7 FAREWELL PARENT MEETING AT 7:00 PM ON NOVEMBER 2ND There will be an outdoor education meeting at 6:00 PM for students and parents. Mr. Dave Duckworth, Camp Jubilee director will outline the program. At 7:00 PM there will be a short meeting for Grade 7 parents to begin preliminary planning for the Grade 7 farewell activities at the end of the school year. In the past, there has been a Grade 7 themed lunch and dance on the last day of school which has been organized by Grade 7 parents. THANK YOU BOOK FAIR VOLUNTEERS!

HALLOWEEN SAFETY

It’s ghost and goblin time again! Here are some tips for a fun and safe Halloween. We are

encouraging our Intermediate students not to wear clown masks this year. How to make your costume safe?

• Make sure that drivers can see your child. Use costumes with reflective tape and give each child a flashlight.

• Costumes should be made with fire resistant material—check the label.

• Make sure your child can see. Use face paint instead of masks. Tie hats, wigs, or scarves securely so that they won’t slip over your child’s eyes.

• To prevent falling, costumes should not be longer than your child’s ankle and shoes should fit properly.

How to make trick or treating safe?

• Children should stay in well-lit areas and only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on. Children should not go inside any house.

• Before your children eat their candy, make sure you examine it. Throw out any candy that has small holes in the wrappers or torn or loose packages. Cut all fruit open before your children eat it. Throw out any treats that are not wrapped.

• An adult should supervise children under 9 years of age; children over 9 years of age who are not with an adult should be with a group of older, responsible children.

• If you are driving on Halloween night, please be extra careful. Children are excited at Halloween and may forget some of the safety rules.

COLD AND FLU SEASON

We are asking for your support to maintain the health of all childrenby keeping your

child(ren) homewhen they are ill. Their recoverywill be sped up when they havethe opportunity to rest at home. Aproper sleep and breakfast areessential to ensure children function well at school. Children should be kept home from school when they have any of the following symptoms:

• Fever over 38 ̊C • Diarrhea and/or vomiting in the previous

48 hours • A rash or blister like soresthat have not

yet been diagnosed

• Cough, runny nose and/or sore throat Call the Hamilton Early Warning number at 604-668-6516 if your child will be absent from school. FIREWORKS In the City of Richmond there is a Fireworks Regulations Bylaw No. 7917 that prohibits the purchase and sale of fireworks. The Bylaw also restricts the possession and display of fireworks displays through conditions of permits issued by the Richmond Fire Rescue Department. Fines could be issued if a person violates the Bylaw. HAMILTON ELEMENTARY WALK/WHEEL TO SCHOOL WEEK OCTOBER 24TH – 28TH

vehicle emissions CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING TEAM Congratulations to all of the students who participated in Hamilton’s Cross Country Running Team this fall. Mr. Kenler and Mrs. Davidson were impressed with the students’ efforts in attending our early morning practices.
