We've been busy putting physics to the test using catapults, discovering serial killers in Forensics and learning about DNA structures in Biology. Next week, we start re-testing for STAAR Biology so please keep our students (and our teachers) in your thoughts. Biology UIL has started meeting the second and fourth Monday before and after school just as a reminder to our students that will be competing.

The Science Department would like to introduce Leanne Johnson to the Lake Worth High School staff. Mrs. Johnson is our new IPC/Chemistry teacher and we're very excited to have her on our team.

Agriculture- This month the agriculture students have been very busy participating in jackpot stock shows and leadership development events. Jeremy Ansley and Bryana Williams have showed their animals at multiple shows including Decatur where bryana took overall grand. This is great for our program because these shows help us lead up to the Fort Worth Stock Show. A couple of our students recently participated in what is called a leadership development event and placed third and will receive a banner for this at district banquet. This hasn't happened in Lake Worth in a couple of years! Some of our upcoming events include getting ready to start career development events and for the Fort Worth Stock Show. Written Anything Good Lately?

Seven the Series,” by seven different authors Seven is a collection of seven books about seven teenage boys whose grandfather dies and leaves them a mysterious note. Each book follows one cousin as he attempts to complete the tasks outlined in their grandfather’s will. These books are action-packed, making them a great choice for reluctant teen readers, especially boys. Another big selling point for this hi-lo series from Orca Book Publishers is that each book is written by a different author. The books have different writing styles and can be read in any order. Your teen may like getting to choose which one to read next!

CAUGHT DOING IT “WRITE”

Currently, English teachers are introducing students to Marking the Text. This active reading strategy is used by the Rhetoric and Writing Studies department at San Diego State University and asks students to think critically about their reading. While reading the text, students analyze ideas, evaluate ideas, and circle and underline essential information. It is a simple, 3-step process and can be applied to any kind of reading that students have to do throughout the school day. This strategy helps students focus on what is being said in the text, leading to increased comprehension and retention of the texts that they read.

Do you have a teenager that is more than a little reluctant to read? Check out these great books for reluctant teen readers.

Foreign Language

Spanish 2 and pre ap 1 classes wrote appreciation letters to the Spanish speaking staff thanking them for their work and telling them that they appreciate their efforts. Spanish 1 researched the Hispanic countries and made posters about each one and practiced writing sentences in Spanish and they will present next week (which will most likely already be done by the time you need this) Spanish 2 researched restaurants in the Hispanic countries to discover what they eat and the prices of the cuisines. They had to create menus listing the different foods for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and drinks. They had to come up with a name for their restaurant and design a menu; all done in Spanish.
