Happy Holidays
School finishes at 3pm on Friday 5 July. Students return to school at 8.50am on Tuesday 23
July. The staff return the day before and the office is open at 8.30am on that day. We hope
you and your family have a restful and happy break.
Farewell
Meng Chan, our school chaplain, is moving to Collier Primary School next term. We thank
her for her years of service (since 2015) and all the support she has given students, staff and
families at KPS.
Speak with Confidence
On Monday our two finalists in our school Speak with Confidence competition Mia (Year 5)
and Beatrice (Year 6), competed at the City of South Perth’s Speak with Confidence
awards. They both represented our school beautifully.
Thank you to the senior school teachers for preparing the children for this competition, and
thank you to the parents for supporting their children as they prepared for this annual event.
Colour Run
Thank you to the P&C for organising such a fun event. The weather was lovely and everyone
enjoyed themselves.
Just a reminder that all funds raised go to the P&C to support the school. Please get your
donations into the P&C box in the office by this Thursday 4 July 2019.
Year 5 Resources Challenge
The Year 5s attended the annual Resources Challenge at Kent Street Senior High School
yesterday. It was a very challenging event, but fun.
Values Mascots
Thank you to all the students who took the time to submit name suggestions for our new
mascots. Each class has now voted on the list of the five finalist name suggestions. The
results of these votes will be announced at our next assembly (Week 2, Term 3) by the
student council. Thank you to the student council for organising and running this values
promotion.
Student Reports
Semester reports were emailed on Tuesday 2nd July. If you haven’t received your email,
please check your junk folder of your emails and, failing that, contact your child’s teacher or
the office to arrange to get one. Please remember to download it and save it somewhere
safe that you will be able to retrieve it easily later. The link to the report is disabled after 4
weeks so ensure you do this in a timely fashion.
Year 6 Camp
The Year 6s left yesterday morning packed with supplies. They are staying at Woodman
Point Recreation Camp from Tuesday – Friday. We look forward to hearing about their camp
highlights on their return. Thank you to Mr Griffiths, Ms Zavodja, Mrs Jetta, Mrs Beazley
and Ms Backhouse for their willingness to volunteer for camp, along with the extra hours and
work this entails.
Bostik Competition
Our Japanese teacher, Rachael Kostusik, has entered the school in the Bostik
Competition. She has taken a photo of one of her Japanese classes making a Banraku puppet
using Bostik glue. You can now view this project via this link or by searching the Gallery
with your Project ID #BSS2131
The entry with the most votes at the end of the competition wins $3,000 for their school! So
visit our entry, vote for our entry and encourage others to vote too. Judging will take place on
19/07/2019 and winners announced at bostik.com/australia/smartschools on 26/07/19.
Kindy 2020 applications
A reminder to parents that applications for Kindy 2020 must be received in the school office
by Friday 26 July 2019. If your child turns four by 30 June 2019, please collect an
Application for Enrolment form from the front office. Kindy applications will need to be
supported by the child’s birth certificate/passport, visa grant papers if applicable,
immunisation records (ACIR/Medicare summary sheet) and proof of address (most recent
gas, water or electricity bill or lease agreement).
Please also be reminded that being enrolled for Kindergarten at KPS does not guarantee a
place in Pre-primary at Kensington, unless your child lives in our local intake
area. Acceptance into Pre-primary is not automatic – you must re-apply for enrolment into
Pre-primary in 2020. Application forms for current Kensington kindy kids will be sent home
at the beginning of Term 3.
Reminder – Year 6 students
Please remember to enrol your Year 6 child in a high school by the end of July.
Understanding discipline
Discipline should encourage children to take responsibility for their own online and offline
behaviour.
What happens at school?
Our school has policies that address the behavioural expectations of students. These plans are
designed to encourage children to take responsibility for their own actions and develop self-
discipline. These policies inform families, teachers and students of what is expected, and
outlines rewards for positive and consequences for poor behaviour.
What can families do?
By working in conjunction with the school, families can provide their children with
consistent expectations and boundaries both at school and at home.
Set consistent, firm limits and rules. Children like to know where they stand. This
includes limits and rules around internet use.
When family rules are set, ask your children to tell you the rules in their own words.
Be consistent with consequences and rewards.
Acknowledge positive behaviour.
Model desired behaviours to your children.
Supervise your children so you know where they are and what they are doing. This
also applies when they are online.
Become familiar with our school’s behavioural policies so your children can see that
you are actively involved. (We will be reviewing our policies next term to add the
concept of “good standing” to them, as required by a new Departmental initiative).
Click here to see our current policy.
Show lots of love and affection. You are the most important person in your child’s life and
your time and attention is the most powerful reward you can give them.
Keep Our School Safe
During the holiday period, school premises are more vulnerable than usual and can become
targets to a small number of offenders.
If you live near the school or are passing by, please keep an eye on our grounds for us. Listen
for unusual noises; look for suspicious vehicles and notice if groups of children or teenagers
are congregating around the school. Your involvement can really make a difference in
preventing damage to our school. I urge you to report any suspicious activities to :

Foyer Display
Over the last few weeks, S4 has been looking at maps and how they are used. For this
project, they created a whole imaginary land of their own.
The wonderful results are on display in the foyer.
Just for a laugh
Running Club
We had our last Running Club and breakfast for the term on Tuesday. Running Club will
recommence the first Friday of Term 3 (26 July). There is no Running Club this Friday. We
have had a great time running with up to 70 runners at a session. Come and join us next term
on the oval on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
West Coast Fever and Eagle Cup
Congratulations to our AFL and Netball A and B teams for going through this competition
undefeated. Thanks to our coaches Mel, Janet and Craig for their brilliant management of the
teams. Presentations will be next term at a time to be notified.
Sporting Schools
Thanks to the Sporting Schools program, we have received funding to run AFL and hockey
sessions during PE lessons with specialist coaches. We have also been able to purchase extra
equipment to supplement these programs. Please see attached information on the Reds
Hockey Club possibly for next season.
50 Games for South Perth Stingrays
Congratulations to Ashton, Owen, Baxter and Sage (ex KPS) and also recently Cruz for
achieving their 50 game milestones for the South Perth Stingrays. Well done boys!
Faction Cross Country and Training
A notification on Consent2Go has been sent home to all students from Pre-primary to Year 6
about our Faction Cross Country (no reply is required). The carnival is on Friday 2 August
and this is a compulsory event. All competitors will run outside the school grounds on the
footpath on Third Ave from the Kiss and Wave gate to the oval gate. Students will train on
the course going outside school grounds on the footpath during PE lessons in Term 3,
supervised by Raema Stanford. If you have any concerns or queries, please contact Mrs
Stanford. Cross Country course maps are displayed on the Sport noticeboard outside the
staffroom. Below is a DRAFT program for the Faction Cross Country on Friday 2 August –
changes may occur.
Chaplain’s Farewell
Dear Kensington Primary School Community,
I am sorry to say that after thoughtful consideration, I have decided to move on to a smaller
school. I am grateful for the trust and support to journey alongside students and the school
community through tough as well as joyous times. It has been a pleasure and privilege to
work here. I shall be leaving with many wonderful and precious memories. Thank you.
