4 School of Law
Welcome from the Head of School
Welcome to First Year Bachelor of Civil Law Bachelor of Law and Business Bachelor of Law and Human Rights
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the School of Law, NUI Galway. We are justifiably proud of our dynamic teaching and our excellence in high quality, impactful research. We are also very proud of you, our dynamic student body. My colleagues and I are here to support you throughout this academic year and indeed throughout your degree. We aim to deliver the highest standard of research-led teaching to
enable you to compete with law students from other institutions in Ireland and throughout the world. The School also provides less formal supports by way of mentoring and career advice, which we encourage you to avail of.
The School seeks to provide a stimulating and supportive environment to facilitate your development as a lawyer. The start of the academic year is a good time to think about what you would like to achieve by the summer. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of exciting opportunities for internships, mooting, clinical placement and international study. Our law degree is designed as a foundation for the further training needed to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. However, your degree provides you with skills useful in any job. Indeed many law graduates opt for a variety of careers beyond the legal professions. Our programme of ‘Careers in Law’ events that runs throughout the course of the year provides useful information that will help you decide on your future career. We run a variety of events throughout the year and we love to see our students attend and participate at these seminars, guest lectures and conferences. I strongly urge you to make the most of these opportunities.
During the year ahead if you need my assistance with anything in particular please make an appointment through the School of Law Administration Office. I look forward to meeting you in the coming months. To learn more about our School I invite you to explore our website, like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter.
Best wishes for a happy and rewarding academic year.Dr Charles O’Mahony, Head of School. [email protected]

National University of Ireland Galway 9
4.4 Staff-Student Liaison
A meeting between School members and representatives of each year of the Law (BCL), Law and Business, Law and Human Rights, and LLB programmes is held at least once a semester. Each class will be requested to nominate one or two representatives early in the academic year. Likewise, the Library User Forum meets once a semester and consists of Library staff, the School of Law member on the Library Committee and student representatives.
4.5 Availability of Photocopied Material
Some of the reading required for certain modules is available on a pay-as-you-go basis in photocopied form and can be purchased from the print shop, Media Linn, which is located opposite the Students Union shop below the library. The opening hours are 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m on Friday.
4.6 Withdrawing from a Programme
If you are thinking about withdrawing from your programme it is really important to speak to your Class Adviser who will discuss the difficulties you are encountering and perhaps reach a solution that enables you to continue.
If you decide that you have no other option then you may apply to de-register by filling in a withdrawal form at the Student Information Desk, located on the ground floor of Áras Uí Chathail.
4.7 Summer Internships & Placement
The School of Law establishes and maintains links with various local, national and international organisations that offer summer internship opportunities for second year NUI Galway law students. Students have undertaken summer internships in the Irish superior courts, the Office of the Attorney General, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, with a Massachusetts appellate judge, the Secretary of State’s Office in the USA, and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in the USA.
4.8 Careers in Law Week
Careers in Law Week is an initiative by the School of Law in conjunction with the Career Development Centre in late September. It is an invaluable opportunity for students to meet with represenatives from the leading Irish Law firms and attend presentations and workshops. More information will be posted on the School of Law website and on social media.
![Page 10: School of La · 6 School of Law 1. Location of the School of Law The School of Law is located on Floors 2 and 3 of Tower 2. 10 School of Law
5. Year 3 of Your Degree
All students entering onto our undergraduate law degrees from 2019/20 will have the option of either Studying Abroad or going on a year-long Professional Work Placement for the 3rd academic year of their 4-year Law degree. As the application process for the Professional Work Placement or Study Abroad takes place during the 2nd year of the degree, academic performance in 1st year is key to securing either a placement or a place abroad.
5.1 Studying Abroad under the ERASMUS Programme
Law (BCL), Law and Business, Law and Human Rights, and LLB students who would like to spend a year of their law studies abroad may do so as part of the School’s involvement in ERASMUS and International Exchange programmes. Law modules are taught through English in the universities of Leuven in Belgium, Leiden and Groningen in Holland, Budapest in Hungary, Krakow in Poland and universities in China, Australia and North America. For those with a high standard of spoken and written French, courses can be taken in Poitiers, Toulouse, Clermont-Ferrand and Aix-en-Province; for those with German, in Gottingen, Wurzburg or Leipzig. Law and Business students who take Spanish may take courses in Granada or Salamanca.
Interested students will be invited to meet with the ERASMUS Director, Director of Internationalisation and the School Administrator early in the first semester of 2nd year. Details of this meeting will be circulated via email and social media. Places on both exchange programmes are limited. Queries can be addressed to Nicola Murphy, ERASMUS Director.
5.2 Professional Work Placement
Work placement brings together learning in the classroom with learning on the job. It is intended to give participating students a practical appreciation of the needs and modus operandi of the workplace, thereby broadening and significantly improving their knowledge. Students will take new and enriched experience back to the classroom, enriching their own education and that of their classmates.
Host organisations assist students in gaining diverse and unique insights into the workings of their organisation. This gives students an opportunity to cultivate innovation and competencies ideally suited for the ever-evolving global workplace.
The School is partnering with nationally and internationally recognized law firms and organisations who are committed to working with us to ensure the best possible work experience. Students will have interview preparation supports to them available in advance of their work placement.

National University of Ireland Galway 11
5.2.1 Duration and Working Hours of Placement
Students are required to pursue a placement for eight months from the start of September to the end of April inclusive.
The exact structure of the working week will be declared by the employer on the job description at the point that the placement opportunity is advertised. The working week may be structured in accordance with the business needs and may for example involve a regular working week (9am-5pm, Monday- Thursday/Friday) or shift work and irregular hours.
Queries can be addressed to Deirdre Callanan, Programme Director and Academic Placement Coordinator, or Larissa Lamb, Placement Officer.
6. The Library
Effective use of the library is a crucially important part of legal education. Students should take advantage of every opportunity to familiarise themselves with the library and the services it offers. Nowadays many excellent services are available through electronic sources (located on the ground floor of the library). Training sessions are available and details may be obtained from the information desk in the Library and at http://library.nuigalway.ie.
7. Examinations (including Repeats and Deferrals)
Students must present for the first sitting of their examinations. Repeat examinations are confined to those who fail at the first attempt or who have permission to defer. However it is important to note that deferral of any examination is a very serious matter and students will not normally be granted a deferral except for the most serious of situations.
Deferrals are only permitted at the discretion of the Head of School, on bona fide grounds of ill-health, or bereavement of close family members, or serious personal circumstances which can be verified independently.
Requests for exam deferral must be made on a special Deferral Application Form available in the School of Law Office. Students must provide documentary letters, medical certificates or other support material from medical doctors, student counsellors or others along with their application. The School reserves the right to verify the stated grounds for deferral.
Only the modules listed on the form will be considered for deferral and students should contact the School of Law Office to be informed of the outcome of their application.

8. Lecture and Tutorial Attendance
Students are required to attend all lectures and tutorials. The venues, times and frequency of lectures are outlined on student timetables.
8.1 Lectures provide:
• An introduction to the topic being studied• An overview of the main themes and issues• An opportunity to learn how a lecturer has interpreted the information and research available on
a given topic• A guide to further reading in an area
During a lecture you should:• Focus on listening to the lecturer• Make notes of the main themes and points made• Avoid the temptation to write down everything that is said
Many lecturers make “class notes” available on Blackboard or in the print shop, Media Linn, in advance of lectures. These notes usually provide a summary of the main points to be made during a lecture, the names of cases, case citations, quotations and references to further reading. They are a teaching tool and are not intended to be a comprehensive summary of the lecture and should not be treated as such.
The aim of a lecture is not to give a definitive and comprehensive set of facts on the module that students will learn by rote. Instead you are expected to supplement the lecture with reading and interpretations of your own, developing your own set of notes on a particular topic by reference to the lecture material and the recommended reading. Module outlines will give an estimated study time required in each module (please see individual module outlines but a workload of approximately 5-6 hours per week per module is typical).
Should you miss several lectures due to illness or for any other reason you should notify the lecturer concerned. It is your responsibility to inform yourself of the content of any lectures missed.
8.2 Tutorials
Many modules require attendance at tutorials. Module outlines and lecturers will provide guidance as to the venues, times, frequency and content of tutorials.
Tutorials provide an opportunity to meet in small groups to discuss a topic in detail in an interactive way. Tutorials are facilitated by a tutor who guides the tutorial and answers any questions you might
![Page 13: School of La · 6 School of Law 1. Location of the School of Law The School of Law is located on Floors 2 and 3 of Tower 2. National University of Ireland Galway 13
have. Generally speaking, the tutorial discussion is structured around a set of questions and/or a case-study. It is vital that you prepare in advance for tutorials by completing the recommended reading and preparing notes to address the questions posed. As the questions and case-studies reflect the types of questions posed in examinations active participation in tutorials is also a valuable way to prepare for exams.
Before a tutorial you should:• Review the relevant lecture• Complete the required reading• Prepare an answer to the tutorial questions• Clarify what you do not understand and prepare questions to be raised during the tutorial
During a tutorial you should:• Listen to the discussion on the material• Make contributions on the material discussed• Raise questions on issues you do not understand or wish to have clarified
9. First-Year Student Attendance and Engagement Policy
All Schools at NUI Galway are required to monitor the attendance of students at classes in order to identify students who are struggling to engage with their studies and to respond by providing appropriate supports. The specifics of how attendance will be monitored and the consequences for non-attendance will be announced in lectures.
The University regulations and the learning, teaching and assessment policy outline the following points:1. Enrolment on a full-time programme means a commitment to 40-50 hours of total student effort
per week throughout all weeks of the semester.2. Attendance is not optional, but an obligatory requirement. Non-attendance may be considered an
effective withdrawal from a programme and students may be unable to proceed to examination or subsequent registration.
3. There are a number of learning supports available across the university which your Class Advisers and individual lecturers will inform you about.

10. Advisory
It can be difficult adjusting to University life as well as being away from home and friends. There are people you can talk to within the School of Law and within the NUI Galway wider community including the Student Health and the Counselling Services. You are encouraged to avail of any such services if you are finding it all a bit overwhelming and lonely.
All undergraduate law programmes have Class Advisers and Programme Directors who can refer you to other appropriate supports if necessary. Indeed, the staff of the School of Law are friendly and helpful and would be glad to discuss issues and assist any student who might have a difficulty.
All lecturers set aside regular times for consultation with students and these times are usually posted on their office doors. You can contact lecturers by email or phone to arrange a meeting or discuss issues of concern to you. Likewise, School Administrative staff have an open door policy in dealing with students.
11. Regulations for BCL, BLB and BLHProgrammes are organised on a semester basis. The academic year is divided into two periods, called semesters, which are of approximately equal length (12 weeks each). Programmes are organised into modules and carry a credit unit weighting (ECTS), or value, which reflects the extent and difficulty of the programme concerned. Modules are normally examined at the end of the semester in which the module was completed. Provisional results for Semester 1 are released at the end of January. These results, along with your Semester 2 results, are confirmed in June.
1. The “Marks & Standards for all Fulltime Undergraduate Degree Examinations” document contains the exam regulations for all full-time undergraduate degrees. It can be found via the following link: https://bit.ly/2BGwxHC
2. Repeat Examinations will be held at the August Examination Session.
3. A candidate must have successfully completed 60 ECTS in First Year to proceed to the Second Year of the programme. The Pass standard is 40% in each module. Compensation will only be applied in cases where its application enables the student to successfully complete the programme as a whole. However, the year may be passed by compensation provided:
• The aggregate mark for all modules of the year is at least 40%• No mark is below 35%• Not more than 15 ECTS have marks in range 35 – 39%
Note: Where one or more of these conditions have not been met each module where the mark is below 40% must be repeated. Marks of 40% and above are carried forward to the next

session and are not repeatable.
4. Honours are awarded only on the aggregate performance to candidates who have successfully completed 60 ECTS, in accordance with the following standards:
First Class Honours, 70%; Second Class Honours Grade One, 60%; Second Class Honours Grade Two, 50%; Third Class Honours, 40%.
5. The First Year Examination must be passed within two academic years from the date of entering the programme, except students who are permitted to transfer to the First Year of another programme, having failed in another school. They must pass the First Year Examination within one academic year of entering the programme.
6. Students who intend to seek entry to the Law Professions must inform themselves of the current requirements of the professional bodies. These requirements are subject to change. Listed below are the modules students must prepare for entrance examinations to the professional bodies (correct at the time of print):
