G.C.M.S.Sample requirements
• Concentration @ g target / l solvent used
• Sample vials supplied by ASEP
• Homogeneous
• Clean
Mass Spectrometry
• Low and High Resolution
• EI, CI, TOF
• Electrospray TOF
• MALDI TOF
• Organic compounds, Solid or Liquid
Mass Spectrometry Sample requirements
• Presented in screw top septum sample vials• Homogeneous
• Clean
• Pure!
• Purity is essential if Accurate Mass data is required.
Mass Spectrometry Sample requirements
• ~ 1 mg /ml in a suitable solvent: Always state the solvent used. When in doubt, consult with the technician.
• EI/CI: preferred solvent is Dichloromethane. Alternatives include Hexane, Acetone or methanol but solvent must be volatile.
• ES: Use Acetonitrile, Methanol or Water ONLY. • MALDI: preferred solvent is Acetonitrile. Solvent
must be volatile
Sample Reception
• Samples may be submitted during normal working hours.
• Completed sample forms – done in duplicate, per sample – must be submitted with samples.
• The ASEP sample log MUST be completed.
• If the sample form or log is incomplete the sample will be returned unanalysed.
Sample Processing
• Analysis will be in strict chronological order except where:
• Analysis is suitable for batching by the analyst
• Similar sample types are being processed
• Samples are urgent
Urgent Samples
• Supervisors consent required
• Request made either directly to Trevor Sewell or Robin Patrick or via the appropriate technician.
• Repeated requests for Urgent analysis will be referred to the Head of School
Reporting
• Results will be attached to the sample submission form as and when they are ready
• Completed analysis / results will be placed – on a daily basis – in the ASEP entrance for collection
Contact
• Contact is at the point of analysis
• Contact is encouraged to ensure you get what you want
