Superpave Volumetric Mix Design forExperienced Marshall Designers (2 days)

This course looks at the differences between Superpave mixdesigns and other design practices, particularly Marshalldesigns. It is intended for contractors, agency personnel andothers who are familiar with basic aggregate and mixturetesting protocols and Marshall or other mix design procedures.

This classroom-only course provides an overview of theSuperpave volumetric mix design procedures and a discussionof the differences—and similarities—between Superpave andMarshall mix design. The course includes a general overviewof asphalt binder and mixture behavior, a detailed review ofthe definitions and significance of mixture volumetricproperties, an example of mix design, a summary of theSuperpave aggregate quality and gradation requirements, anda discussion of the possible impacts of Superpave mix designson construction and plant operations. The course concludeswith a workshop session that gives participants the chance towork through the calculations and thought process involved incompleting a Superpave mix design.

Topics covered include:• Introduction to Superpave• Materials Selection (Binder and Aggregate)• Superpave Gyratory Compactor• Mixture Volumetrics• Volumetric Mix Design• Construction Issues• Calculations Workshop

Superpave Volumetric Mix DesignFundamentals (Beginners 4 days)

For contractors, agency personnel, and others who are new toHMA testing and mix design, the NCSC offers this course onthe fundamentals of Superpave volumetric mix design. Noknowledge of the basic principles of mix design or mixturevolumetrics is required. The course includes classroom andlaboratory sessions, with nearly half of the course being hands-on either in the lab or performing calculations.

The course covers all of the topics in the course for experienceddesigners above, but at a slower pace and in more detail. Inaddition, classroom sessions and laboratory demonstrationscover the following basic concepts and procedures:

• Aggregate Specific Gravities (Bulk and SSD)• Mixture Specific Gravities (Bulk and Maximum

Theoretical)• Blending Aggregates• Batching Aggregates• Mixing and Compacting Specimens• Use and Calibration of the Superpave Gyratory

CompactorHands on sessions include:

• Mix Specific Gravities (Bulk and Max)• Compaction of the Specimen Using the Gyratory

Compactor

Superpave Binder (3 days)

This classroom and laboratory training course providesdetailed instruction on the Superpave binder specificationsand testing procedures. A thorough introduction andoverview is provided on the first day. The remainder of thecourse is mostly hands-on in the laboratory. Each participantwill fabricate test specimens and perform tests on the bendingbeam rheometer, dynamic shear rheometer, direct tensiontester, and rotational viscometer. Calibration procedures willbe demonstrated and conducted by participants whereappropriate. An overview of the binder aging methods will beprovided. The course concludes with a workshop sessionduring which students will grade an asphalt binder usingtheir own data. An overview of the binder specifications and adiscussion of implementation issues will also be presented.

The course is designed for laboratory technicians andmanagers who need to understand the binder specificationsand test procedures. No prior knowledge of the Superpavespecifications is required, but some experience with asphaltbinder/testing is helpful.

Topics covered include:• Background of Superpave Asphalt Performance Tests• Dynamic Shear Rheometer• Rotational Viscometer• Bending Beam Rheometer• Direct Tension Tester• Binder Aging Methods• Superpave Binder Specifications• Grading Binder (using participant data)• Implementation Issues• Three Hands-On Laboratory Sessions
