V ietnam is witnessing immense growth in demand for talented designers and

communicators, making this a really exciting time to be embarking on a career path in the creative and cultural industries.

In response to the changing needs of industry, we are continually updating our program offerings in the fields of communication, design and fashion to ensure we provide the most industry-relevant learning experience.

In 2020, we’re excited to be launching the new Bachelor of Digital Film and Video program at our Saigon South campus. In 2019, we offered our Bachelor of Design Studies program in Hanoi for the first time.

Our students are highly valued by industry, as proven by their high employment rate post-graduation. The international learning environment at RMIT encourages cultural awareness, critical thinking, experimentation and, above all, the ability to think differently.

Working closely with our industry partners ensures that our programs are aligned with the needs of employers. Through activities such as internships and industry projects, students connect with industry partners well before they graduate.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school and to your future career.

In a three-month internship, I took the role of a public relations account intern at TBWA\Vietnam. The experience gave me a clear view of the communication industry. I was lucky to meet many amazing people who were able to help me realise my strengths and capabilities. I highly recommend students do an internship. While studying in class equips you with practical knowledge, an internship gives you the perspective from a real professional workplace.

This career-oriented degree trains multi-talented communicators with cross-platform skills in the exciting and fast-growing media and communication sector.

Professional communicators are experts in creating traditional and digital content that is both informative and compelling. They build relationships and communicate key brand stories in a creative and interactive way.

Our courses focus on advertising and public relations (PR). Advertisers seek to build the brand of a product or service in order to change consumer behaviour. PR practitioners seek to inform and influence members of the public in order to build a positive opinion of an issue or organisation.

With the communication sector increasingly in need of graduates who have a combination of skills in advertising, PR and digital methods, our program addresses this demand by developing students’ capabilities through up-to-date learning activities.

You will undertake industry research and develop commercial industry briefs. Events such as forums and public lectures provide a chance to connect with key industry figures. The Flagship Internship program offers an invaluable experience in a real-world working environment.

Hope Unending is a non-profit organisation for anti-human trafficking and anti-child exploitation. We’ve been collaborating with students from the Design Studies program as part of their class projects. Our initial expectation was for them to re-design posters and fliers for our outreach program. However, they were so creative and proactive that they came up with an idea to produce a picture book. I was truly impressed with their ability to think outside of the box.

Part of the program is delivered through two forms of block mode:

four-week block mode, with classes three times per week over four weeks;

eight-week block mode, with classes either three or two times per week over eight weeks.

The program culminates in project work and a three-month internship, giving you the chance to develop a portfolio to impress future employers.

Len Thanh VuIndustry partner Project Manager, Hope Unending

The Design Studies program is as exciting for the lecturers as it is for the students. Through an intensive and focused program, we get to see young designers develop the fundamental skills of design practice. This is supported by an introduction to the theoretical and historical basis of these skills. With this experience as their foundation, they develop the confidence to then identify their own unique and creative identities. We are proud to play a part in this magnificent journey.

This program is for students who have a passion for design technology and the 'magic' that it can perform, such as visual effects.

The design landscape is in an ongoing state of flux, with new technologies emerging almost daily.

These technologies are connected in multiple ways and serve multiple disciplines, including design, visual effects and game design. Software, therefore, is a profoundly flexible medium, capable of being used in many ways.

In this program, you will become familiar with a range of creative software and hardware. Importantly, you will learn how to think visually and in a manner designed to offer unique solutions to visual problems.

Our digital studios are well-equipped and our international lecturers have a wide range of experience in a number of industries.

audio/video post-production;

web and information design;

The program has strong relationships with local industry partners who offer a range of exciting internship opportunities. You will engage with industry partners in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) projects, undertaking industry research and developing commercial industry briefs, for example.

Rice & Partners focuses on content marketing and specialises in video production. I’m on the industry committee with the School of Communication & Design. I’ve previously done workshops with students and I’ve been a guest speaker in classes. We have several full-time interns from RMIT. Youth development is very important in our company, as we believe that talented people should be nurtured early in their careers. During our class involvement, the students have been eager to engage, ask questions and see our case studies.

I’m now working as a graphic design teacher. When I look back on my university life, I feel grateful. I learned a lot from the dedicated teachers. There are teachers who specialise in different fields, so I had the chance to experience other creative subjects before choosing to focus on one. My RMIT experience wasn’t just a composition of lessons; it was a composition of people. They really made it come alive!

What you will studyThe diagram shows the advised program structure and progression:

The program includes a wide variety of fields. Exposure to different media, such as photography, sound and graphic design, gives me the chance to figure out what I’m interested in pursuing further. The structure follows a real-life workflow. For my internship, the thing that stands out is how condensed time is. A week in class equates to a day in the workplace. Being an intern is useful for getting a feel for the real working environment.Eileen Yeo

If you can see yourself interpreting for a Vietnamese company director on a trade mission to Japan, or translating and writing in Vietnamese for a multinational corporation, this program will set you on the path to your dream job.

Develop a foundational understanding of language in different cultural contexts and then choose to specialise in Japanese or translating and interpreting, or both via a double major.

The Japanese major is taught by Japanese nationals. It combines language skills with experiences of Japanese lifestyle and culture, including engagement with Japanese-speaking industry and community partners.

The Translating and Interpreting major is taught in English and utilises cutting-edge technology, including simultaneous interpreting booths and specialised software. It builds skills and techniques that can immediately be put into practice in the real world.

international business

travel and tourism

media and communications

copywriting and editing

Jobs are available across government, large and small businesses, and NGOs, especially in areas such as:

The double major prepares graduates with advanced trilingual and cross-cultural skills, providing the opportunity to develop excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, Japanese and Vietnamese.

The program places a strong emphasis on face-to-face learning in the first two years, followed by two Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses and further cultural studies.

Careers

In the Japanese major, students engage with native Japanese speakers from a diverse range of organisations, including through on-site workshops and off-site company visits. In the Translating and Interpreting major, professional translators and interpreters share their experience through guest lectures. Industry experts also lead a range of simulations.

Yamaha Music Vietnam is the youngest subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation, a world-leading brand in musical instruments. It has been a pleasure to share about Japanese music and culture with RMIT’s students. Our corporate philosophy is: ‘Sharing Passion and Performance’. We focus on creating excitement and inspiration through music in life, education and culture. So it has been great to witness students passionately learning new things. I now realise why RMIT graduates fit so well into international workplaces.

Students in the Translation and Interpretation major are very keen to learn about the many electronic tools which can be used to speed up the translation process. The classroom environment is always encouraging, with students exploring new ways to improve their translation tasks and sharing hands-on experiences. I enjoy helping them see how important the translation and localisation market is and how they can use their new skills and knowledge to participate successfully in it.

What you will studyThe diagram shows the advised program structure and progression:

During my gap year, I worked with a Japanese educational agency and coordinated with them on charity projects. I had some trouble communicating successfully in Japanese to execute these projects. It was then that I wanted to add Japanese language skills to my capabilities. In one class at RMIT, we had Japanese professionals come to meet with us. The way of learning Japanese in class helps to build my confidence in approaching conversations with Japanese people.
