Evolution of SIS: Graduate Program

• MAIR moved from Antioch University in 2001

• Through last year Professor Bruce LaBrack was Faculty Director

• Partnership with Intercultural Communications Institute (ICI)

• One of 6 MA intercultural programs in the country. Faculty come from around the country and world

• Limited residency program in Portland. Three residencies over 18 months plus a thesis

• 100+ current students; 8-14 new students per residency. Break even is 10 students

• Tuition: 50% to ICI/50% to PacificSIS gets 40% of the 50%

PICCT• The Pacific Institute for Cross-Cultural Training

(PICCT) was established in early 2004. It has evolved from Pacific’s long-standing commitment to support international education, encourage appreciation of diversity, and contribute to greater intercultural understanding.

• Mission:• Conduct needs assessments for cross-cultural

training opportunities across the university• Ensure cross cultural competency in students,

faculty and staff • Administer and interpret instruments such as the

Intercultural Development Inventory, (IDI) Conflict Styles Inventory, and the Learning Styles Inventory

• One of major products: “What’s up with Culture.”

California International Studies Project

• Established legislatively in 1985• Part of California Subject Matter

Projects• Re-located from Stanford to Pacific in

California International Studies Project

• K-12 teacher training program reaches more than 2,000 teachers per year in training institutes

• 70,000-100,000 students impacted yearly by the program

• Partnering with Benard and the soon-to-be-opened high school in Tracy (Kimball), which has an international studies academy as well as Natomas High in Sacramento

• Introduced legislation in last Congressto make CISP a national model

Contemporary World History Project

• Works with two thousand, 10th grade world history teachers statewide.

• Coordinates innovative electronic Model United Nations component

• For two years, Pacific students have played role of the United States

• 400-500 students come to Pacific every May for the Global Forum.

• George Miller (Chair of House Education Committee) mentioned he is interested in Forum and may want to come back to campus

Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship:• The Global Center has both an international

and local focus

• Nonprofit Sustainability Workshops: Center has conducted a series of 4 hands-on workshops co-sponsored by United Way, Small Business Development Center, Nonprofit Executive Directors Association, COMA; reasonable registration fee charged to meet operational expenses

• Incubator Apprenticeship Program connects students with start up SE organizations

• Central Valley Microfinance Project

Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship: Non Profit

Sustainability Workshops

• 50 local nonprofits have been trained

• Workshops have been facilitated by outside consultants and Pacific faculty: Joe Johnson, Dan Wadhwani, Cynthia Weick

• The first workshop series will conclude with a Feasibility Study Competition on 6 March at Work Net from 2-5; open to the public at no charge

• Approximately 10 nonprofits will each make 10 minute presentations

Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship: Non Profit

Sustainability Workshops

• Competition: A jury of 6 professionals will critique and assess the presentations; 3 jurors from Pacific Business School faculty

• $5000 prize will be awarded to winner (United Way and private corporation donors)

• Local network of social entrepreneurship nonprofits in the formative stages

• Exploration begun with Kaiser Permanente to develop a long term funding partnership for future workshops

Global Center: Microfinance Initiative

First Microfinance Fund in the Central Valley being developed to provide small business start-up loans to low income population

Partnership with the San Joaquin Delta College Small Business Development Center

Funding proposal will be submitted soon to Small Business Administration in DC

Global Center: Speaker’s Series

Brings leading specialists in the field to the University for campus-community forums and classroom seminars.

Sakena Yacoobi- Afghan Institute of Learning improves the health and education of Afghan women and children, relieving their suffering after three decades of war and civil strife, and enhancing the quality of their lives.

Martin Burt- Fundación Paraguaya promotes entrepreneurship, enabling people of limited resources to create jobs and increase their family income.

Heidi Kuhn- Roots of Peace works to unearth dangerous landmines in war-torn countries and build sustainable crops on land once too dangerous to traverse.

Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship

• The Global Center has both an international and local focus

• Global Ambassadors Program that will send 8-12 students overseas to work with SE organizations. Fully funded

• Two weeks ago got final approval to offer certificate in social entrepreneurship.

• Will be on line by 5/09 and offered this summer in Rwanda, Uganda and locally

• Certificate has 3 graduate level courses

Approved last week has two tracks: Latin American track U.S./Latino Track

“Casa Covell” opened Fall, 2009

Certificate has a required internship either locally or in Latin America

Latino Outreach

• Coordinates Bilingual Financial Aid conference annually with Hispanic Chamber and many other local organizations. 2000-3000 attend. Currently for 7-12th graders. Will extend next year to 5th and 6th grade.

• Meets regularly with Hispanic/Latino/Chicano community leaders through Coalition of Mexican-American Organizations (COMA)

Latino Outreach

• JUMPSTART program works with parents and 7-9th graders to encourage college bound culture. Last year had an overnight stay program with 7th and 8th graders on campus.

• Coordinated with Delta College PUENTE program to connect transfer students to Pacific. Parents and family members attend event. Entire program is in Spanish.

• Coordinate with Delta College to conduct leadership training sessions for Hispanic students

Latino Outreach: COMA• Helping to develop a business directory

• Assisted with retreat on goal setting and amending their constitution

• Host monthly meetings

• Working with Benard and COMA to create a program for Hispanics who received their degrees in Latin America (engineers doctors, journalists) to be credentialed for teaching in the U.S.

Latino Outreach: LULAC

• Coordinate LULAC Youth Conference for 6-12th graders (1600 students). Help to plan workshops and provide volunteers for the event

• LULAC Adult Chapter: Assist with their annual fundraiser which supports students scholarships. Student volunteers work with this chapter to make over 2000 foot baskets for the Stockton community during the December holidays.

Latino Outreach: LULAC

• Assisted Pacific’s LULAC student organization in creating the College Life program.

• High school students spend a day with a current Pacific student, attend classes and learning about what is like to be a college student.

• Over 200 students have been served and this is increasing yearly. Pacific LULAC was recognized nationally for this innovated program.

International Law Initiative

• Saturday Academy: Offered on all three campuses

• Model UN: Students attend national and international conferences

• Coordinates with Legal Scholars Program
