Note from Dean Ann M. BrillThank you! I am honored and humbled at the generosity and enthusiasm our donors show toward the School of Journalism.

We know that there are many organizations you could be supporting, yet you choose to help KU carry out its mission to educate students, research and solve problems, and serve the citizens of Kansas, the nation and the world. You are making a difference in the lives of so many people through the dollars you give.

As I look over this list of names, two things strike me. One is the extensive list of individuals and companies that support the School. Each contribution is important as we continue to try to do more with limited state dollars. Your dollars make the difference for a student who could not afford to attend college without financial help.Today, tuition costs can be prohibitive and put college out of reach without scholarship dollars. And, every year, we try to stretch those dollars to help as many students as possible.

The other impact this list makes is the names themselves. We remind our students that names are important. We stress correct spellings, titles and affiliations. Your names will forever be linked to the School because of the scholarships or awards you have endowed. Others have chosen to name scholarships or awards in honor of someone close to them. It’s so gratifying to see the names of longtime donors, new donors and even recent graduates on this list. Each of you is important.

It is with great pleasure that we honor those alumni and friends who so generously supported the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications in 2009 and 2010. We thank you for your outstanding commitment to our efforts!

During this difficult economic time, I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of gifts from our loyal Jayhawk Journalists. Our profession is undergoing major changes, and private support is more important than ever as we prepare our students for successful careers. Your philanthropy helps with scholarship support, technology upgrades, study abroad, faculty recruitment and retention, and so much more. We couldn’t do it without you!

The 2010 Wooldridge Scholars are photographed at the annual Wooldridge Scholars dinner Sept. 28, 2010, in the Kansas Union. The scholarship, named after Roger Wooldridge, the only son of Norris and Helena Wooldridge, has been helping students earn journalism degrees at KU since 1974. It has become one of the hallmarks of the School, providing financial assistance, emotional support and lifetime membership in the Wooldridge family.

These contributions are crucial to the success of the J-School and provide unrestricted support for the J-School’s initiatives. Matching gifts from corporations are included as part of Deans Club contributions.

The “Bridging the Gap: A Military Experience for Journalists” workshop is part of the School of Journalism’s Media and the Military program. The workshop allows journalists from around the nation to embed for a week with soldiers at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. The Media and the Military program is a collaboration between the KU School of Journalism and the United States Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth. The program is sponsored by a generous grant from the McCormick Foundation.
