3
Admission Criteria
The class you join will depend on the qualifications and experience you have.
Our beginner classes are for those who have no prior knowledge of the target language. You will not be
permitted to study at beginner level if you already have a qualification in the target language.
Look at the Language Levels section (below) which will help you choose the best level for you. If you are unsure,
don’t worry! During the first teaching week, you will have the opportunity to seek advice from the lecturer and
can always switch to another group.
IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is recommended for non-native speakers of English.
Language Levels
Languages are available in up to six different levels. The following information should help you identify which
level to enrol on.
BEGINNERS:
This normally implies no previous knowledge in the language.
On successful completion of this level, you should be able to understand and use, in spoken mode, familiar
everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; write simple
isolated phrases and sentences and give information in writing about matters of personal relevance; and
understand very short, simple texts, picking up familiar names, words and basic phrases. The Learning Outcomes
of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level A1.
POST-BEGINNERS:
This level is designed for students who have successfully completed our Beginners’ module or its equivalent
(Council of Europe Level A1).
On successful completion of this level, you should be able to understand, in spoken mode, sentences and
frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance; undertake simple and routine tasks
requiring a simple and direct exchange of information, in spoken mode, on familiar and routine matters;
understand short, simple written texts on familiar matters of a concrete type; and write a series of simple
phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors. The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance
with the Council of Europe Level A2.
INTERMEDIATE:
This level is designed for students who have successfully completed our Post-Beginners’ module or its equivalent
(Council of Europe Level A2).
On successful completion, students should be able to understand the main points of clear standard input relating
to the fields of work and/or study and/or leisure and/or selected contemporary issues; describe orally
experiences and events and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans; and describe in writing
4
experiences and events and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The Learning Outcomes
of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level B1.
ADVANCED:
This level is designed for students who have successfully completed our Intermediate module or its equivalent
(Council of Europe Level B1).
On successful completion, students should be able to recognise the main ideas of complex text on both concrete
and abstract topics; interact in spoken mode with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular
interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; and produce clear, detailed text
and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level B2.
ADVANCED + 1:
This level is designed for students who have successfully completed our Advanced module or its equivalent
(Council of Europe Level B2).
On successful completion, students should be able to use spoken and written language flexibly and largely
effectively for social, academic and professional purposes; and produce clear, well-structured, detailed text,
showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level B2/B2+.
ADVANCED + 2:
This level is designed for students who have successfully completed the Advanced + 1 module or its equivalent
(Council of Europe Level B2+).
On successful completion, students should be able to demonstrate those linguistic skills which enable them to
communicate efficiently on a wide range of topics with an appropriate degree of fluency and accuracy in written
and spoken language; and apply wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary issues to the critical analysis of
material.
The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level C1.
Assessment
You will undertake semester-end exams assessing your receptive, productive and interactive language skills.
At higher levels (above advanced) you will also produce a personal portfolio of language work over the course
of the academic year. This consists of a needs analysis identifying areas you wish to improve, a series of tasks
based on your needs analysis which address the areas identified (e.g. if you want to improve your writing skills
5
you might undertake a short essay or report as one of your tasks) and a critical analysis of what you have learned
while carrying out the tasks.
Certificate or Elective?
The Part-Time Languages Programme can be studied as either a certificate or an elective. Whichever option you
choose there is no difference in the course content.
Certificate
A certificate is an assessed programme of study that is available to current UCLan students, UCLan staff and
members of the public.
This is the option for postgraduate or undergraduate students with a full profile or without the option to choose
an elective. The certificate is taken in addition to your main programme of study. Taking a language this way
means that it is kept separate from your main course and your mark does not affect the overall mark for your
main programme. On successful completion of this course, you will receive an achievement certificate. The
important thing to remember about taking a certificate is that you are in effect taking an extra module and so
you should ensure that you have time to commit to this additional work.
Elective
Current UCLan students, whose main degree programme allows it, can study the Part-Time Languages
Programme as an elective. Your course leader or academic adviser will be able to advise whether you have this
option for your course. The important thing to note with electives is that they do form part of your main
programme of study so the mark counts towards your main award just as your other modules do. You will not
receive a separate certificate showing that you have studied a language, but the mark for this module will appear
on your official transcript for the appropriate year of study. A Part-Time Languages module is worth 20 credits.
Fees
Certificates
Students taking a certificate
Subject to numbers, UCLan students can take one certificate for free.
Members of the public and UCLan staff
The fee for all levels is £4952.
Payment must be made upon enrolment. Before completing your enrolment please be sure that you do wish
to pursue the course, as the following fees will apply should you withdraw from the course:
Withdrawal before 25th October: full refund applies (please contact the C&T Hub to notify
them of your withdrawal)
2 UCLan staff members are entitled to a 50% reduction on completion of staff tuition fee discount form and a letter from your line manager. Those in
receipt of the state pension are entitled to a 50% reduction upon completion of a discount form available from the C&T Hub [email protected].
6
Withdrawal after 25th October: no refund applies
Electives
If you are an undergraduate student studying a language as an elective, this is counted as part of your course.
The elective is included in the fee you pay to the University; therefore, there is NO additional payment.

Worldwise Languages Programme
Programme at a Glance
Worldwise Languages consists of three elements:
A self-study course in your chosen language using the world-leading language learning
software Rosetta Stone;
The opportunity to attend regular group sessions with a native-speaking language assistant to
practise your speaking skills in selected languages;
Support from the Worldwise team during Centre opening hours.

About Rosetta Stone
Rosetta Stone is a high-quality language learning software that helps you
learn languages naturally. It imitates the way you learned your first
language, by connecting words to objects. You can follow a self-study
language-learning course in your own time, at your own pace.
Rosetta Stone can be accessed on campus via the PCs in the Worldwise
Learning Centre and in the Languages Lab, AB128. It can also be accessed
off campus from your own PC, laptop, tablet or mobile application.
Adelphi Building, where the Worldwise Learning Centre is based, is open between 8.00am and 9.00pm Monday
to Friday during term-time. In student vacation periods, these opening times will vary so please contact the
Worldwise Learning Centre for further information.
The Worldwise Learning Centre Helpdesk (AB110) is open: Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.
When you sign up for the programme, you will be given your Rosetta Stone login details and instructions on how
to access the programme. Your Rosetta Stone account for the 2019/20 academic year will expire on 31st August
2020.
The Worldwise Learning Centre team also organises regular introductory workshops to help you get the most
from your Rosetta Stone learning experience. Our staff are available during Helpdesk opening hours should you
have any questions about using the software.
Various headsets with microphones are available to borrow during Helpdesk opening hours or you may use your
own.
What you will study
Each language level consists of up to 40 hours of self-study material. It is made up of a series of exercises focusing
on key skills – reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar. The programme is not formally assessed and
you can repeat any sections you have found challenging. On completion of each level, you can request an
achievement certificate and a report detailing your progress. You can choose from the languages on the
following page:
Level 1 = Elementary
Level 2 = Beginners
Level 3 = Lower Intermediate
Level 4 = Intermediate
Level 5 = Upper Intermediate
11
Conversation Classes
You can practise your speaking skills in a range of languages by joining our regular conversation classes facilitated
by a native-speaking language assistant.
