Other alumni to perform in Centennial events include percussionist Paul Tanner, and performances from the UWA Centennial CD featuring faculty Suzanne Wijsman, Chris Tonkin and Nicholas Bannan, also the distinctive Winthrop Singers and, later in the year, the first UWA School of Music Messiah for many years.

Our free Lunchtime Concerts, every Thursday during semester at 1:10pm in the Octagon Theatre, feature alumni, recent graduates and outstanding students. The new Callaway Series presents works by soloists and ensembles that are working towards meeting their coursework goals.

So come down and hear the rising stars of classical music, and some already established in the firmament. I look forward to seeing you there!

Dr Alan LourensHead of School

This year will see UWA celebrate one hundred years. For more than half of that time, the university has turned to the School of Music to enhance the life of the campus, providing a culturally enriching experience for the public, staff and students. Through our concerts have emerged several generations of some of the country’s greatest musicians; members of every major orchestra in the country; winners of the ABC Young Performers Awards (and its predecessors); some of the finest music educators in the country; a host of musicologists, ethnomusicologists and academics; and lawyers, doctors, arts graduates and generations of the good and great that have shaped our society.

Performance remains a key aspect of our teaching. Our Keyed Up! Recital Series, now home in our very own Callaway Music Auditorium, presents some of the worlds greatest pianists. We continue the expansion of our Artistry! Orchestral Series, this year including a performance of Stravinsky’s masterwork Rite of Spring within a few days of its very own centenary, as well as other concerts featuring Paul Wright, and a new concert in conjunction with St Mary’s Cathedral featuring acclaimed Australian Mezzo-Soprano Caitlin Hulcup who returns to Australia as part of a unique Artist in Residence Program. Our Vocal Program continues its renaissance with Opera Scenes, and the Guitar Ensemble builds on their outstanding concert in 2012 with performances in Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, and with UWA alumni and international guitar superstar Craig Ogden.

MessiahThursday 31 October 7.30pm St Mary’s CathedralUWA School of Music and St Mary’s Cathedral proudly present Handel’s Messiah.

Written in 1742, Handel’s Messiah was almost banned by Jonathan Swift, Dean of the Cathedral in Dublin, the city in which it received its first performance. But the piece more than survived the challenge, going on in its composer’s own lifetime to be seen as his greatest work. In a year of masterpieces to celebrate the UWA Centenary, there could be no more fitting a finale as we approach the Christmas season.

Assisting him will be the Head of the School of Music at UWA, Dr. Alan Lourens. Prizes and AwardsUWA School of Music offers various scholarships, awards and prizes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to assist music students with their study. For more information, please visit our website:

Performance RecitalsUndergraduateEach year UWA celebrates the amazing talent of our performance and composition students in a series of senior and graduation recitals. Our 3rd year, 4th year and honours students across all instrumental areas, as well as piano, voice and composition undertake recitals in early June or November.

These recitals are not only an assessment for the students but a culmination of hours of practice and preparation and an opportunity to showcase their work and convey their love of music in a public performance in the wonderful surrounds of Callaway Music Auditorium.

PostgraduateEach year a number of our Master of Music (Performance and Composition) and Doctor of Musical Arts students also present their work in recitals and fascinating lecture-recitals.

The UWA School of Music Junior Music School provides fun filled classes and individual tuition that nurture and extend musical development for children from 18 months to high school students.

ClassesFor children aged 18 months to 14 years, classes focus on the development of aural skills, tonal and rhythmic awareness, song singing, instrumental skills and movement. Led by experienced teachers, your child will be engaged in a wide variety of musical experiences that will provide them with the foundation for sound musical development and exciting musical discoveries.

Instrumental LessonsIndividual tuition with outstanding practitioners is available for piano, violin, flute and clarinet.

ChoirJMS offers enthusiastic young singers in Years 5–8 an exciting opportunity to be part of a young people’s choir dedicated to high quality choral singing. The choir will be led by an outstanding choral director and music educator with extensive experience teaching and conducting young people.

Discover MusicThe UWA School of Music provides opportunities for secondary school aged students through our DISCOVER MUSIC program. Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to work with outstanding School of Music teaching staff, observe artists, participate in master classes and perform.

At the end of each year, young musicians and composers can attend a Summer School led by expert UWA staff. The Summer School is open to any secondary aged student wishing to engage in new and exciting musical experiences. In 2013 the Summer School will be held on December 3-6.
