BHARATHIAR UNIVERSITY

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

The Bharathiar University was established at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu in February, 1982 under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981. The Postgraduate centre of the University of Madras, which was functioning in Coimbatore before 1982 formed the core of the Bharathiar University. In May, 1985 the University received the recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi for the purpose of grants. The University named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi is enshrined with the motto “Educate to Elevate”. In the University, every effort is harnessed to realize his dream of making educational institutions as temple of learning. It is the aim of the University to participate in the task of inculcating necessary Knowledge, Skills and Creative Attitudes and values among the youth of the country to contribute more effectively towards establishing an equitable social and economic and secular ideal of our nation.

The Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments in this university. This department was started in the year 1974 by the University of Madras as a post-graduate study center. In the year 1982, after the establishment of Bharathiar University by the Government of Tamilnadu, this center became the Department of Physics of Bharathiar University. The success of the department over the years has been recognized by the State and Central governments. The government of Tamilnadu has identified this department as the “Center of Excellence” for PG and research programs with a financial support of Rs. 2.5 crores to create and establish state of the art advanced research laboratory in the department of physics to enhance theexisting research potentials on par with international standards. Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has recognized this department as

FIST sponsored department by sanctioning Rs. 20 lakhs for the creation of central computer lab in the first phase and about Rs. 1.5 crores for establishing state of the art lab facilities in its second phase. The department is also benefitted under the DST-PURSE program offered to the science departments of this university. In December 2010, UGC has sanctioned Rs. 69.5 lakhs to this department under its special assistance programme (SAP). The department has successfully completed major research projects worth of Rs. 3.5 crores funded by agencies like UGC, CSIR, DST, BRNS, DAE, ISRO, DRDO, BRFST, etc., Around 750 research papers have been published in National and International Journals. Around Rs. 2.5 crores worth of projects are currently being carried out by our faculty members.

The main objective of this conference is to make awareness among the scientific community to explore eco-friendly materials for the energy and environmental applications. In addition, it is aimed to emphasize the importance of new materials for the multifunctional applications including optoelectronics, sensors and catalyst for the environmental remediation purposes. Considering this it is strongly believed that the event of AMEEA - 2015, would address some of the socially important issues through plenary sessions and invited talks by eminent personalities. Further, this event extends opportunities to the budding scientists/students to present their research findings in the form of oral and poster and it will pave a platform for them to interact with the experts.
