School of Science geography Outreach Programmes The department has adopted a novel approach to help the society utilizing knowledgebase and laboratory facilities through Outreach Programme. As a part of the Outreach Programme, the department is conducting water health survey in surrounding villages. It also aims at analyzing the health impact of the residents subsequent to the use of surface and ground water. The department is also aimed to support village farmers to improve crop productivity as a part of Outreach Programme in future. Excursion Students of UG and PG programmes are taken to the different parts of the country in curriculum specific excursions for increasing field knowledge, research capabilities and field experience of subjective knowledge. Students from different batches have visited to Kerala, Darjeeling and some local areas in the past academic years. They have experienced field knowledge of geomorphology, social and environment geography, surveying, instrument handling etc. They were taught the method of data collection, observation of physical features and social aspects. The students have enjoyed more than a week together in the natural scenic beauty while doing research having fun and experiencing food and shopping. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Geography, Adamas University commenced its classes from the academic session 2015-16 under School of Sciences. The department has nine teaching and research staffs. The department offers industrial internship to enhance skills of the students and provide job opportunities. Additionally, the Adamas University is enlisted under EDUSAT based outreach programme conducted by IIRS, Dehradun. Unlike traditional methods of studying geography, the department thrived to offer strong hands on training to the undergraduate and postgraduate students in solving real-world spatial problems.

LABORATORY FACILITIES

• The Cartographic Lab consists of all the basic field instruments and is a vast store house of Topographical Maps, Aerial Photos and Satellite Images.

• Geoinformatics Lab is well resourced with advanced geospatial software including TNT Mips 2016, Quantum GIS 2.18.4, SAGA, DIVA GIS, Whitebox Geospatial Tool and Statistical Packages including R, PSPP, SOFA, SimFit and many others.

• The Physical Geography Lab has water and soil testing facilities, Gas Detection Probes for pollutants concentration analysis, Infrared Thermometer Gun, Air Sampler, Eco Sounder, Rain Gauge, Current Meter, Sound Meter, GPS, Humidity and Temperature Data Logger, Anemometer etc.

• Centre for Water & Air Analysis: Water Sample testing facility Using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), Real time air pollution monitoring using “Honeywell Multi Gas Detector”, ‘Airveda Air Quality Monitor.’

• Using all available lab facilities and in collaboration with Chemistry and Biotechnology department our research scholars and post graduate students have successfully carried out a number of research works on rainwater harvesting, thermal environmental modeling, social management, ecotourism modeling, coastal geomorphology, climate change, paleo-channel dating, mapping contemporary economic and cultural landscapes. Their papers have been highly appreciated in number of national and international conferences. The department has collaborated with IIRS - ISRO, Dehradun for conducting and organizing various program on Geospatial Technologies.

CAREER PATH

At Adamas University we make our students capable for securing their place in higher academia, research agency, and government sectors as well as in corporate sectors where geography has wide range of applicability. The curriculum is designed to provide industry interactions and internship programs to students and assured placements at the end of their academic session. Our students have been well placed in colleges as Assistant Professor, as GIS analyst in various private sectors like Sutherland Global Services, Cactus Publication. Both Undergraduate Students and Post Graduate Students have successfully completed Summer Internships from Regional Remote Sensing Center (RRSC) – Kolkata (ISRO), Opsis system Private Limited, Anudip foundation, Red Cross Society etc.

Workshop and Seminar

• The Departmental of Geography used to conduct Workshops and Conferences on regular basis. The workshop on “Geospatial Data Analysis Using Open Source Software” and on “Road Map of Future Geographers: Drone Technology and Geospatial Analysis” were of great success.

• Distinct lecture series are being organised by the department regularly. Special invitees include Scientists from IIRS - ISRO Dehradoon, RRSC-Kolkata, ISM Dhanbad etc.

• The department has observed World GIS Day on 15th November 2018. A special lecture on the Utility of GIS in Daily Lives was delivered by Dr. Tapti Banerjee, Director, NATMO. Interschool Quiz and Poster Presentation were the other major activities of the day.
