__________________________________________________________________ General Comments: Thanks for another fun week in Kindergarten! We love seeing and hearing about the awesome learning you are doing at home. We are so proud of all of you! Remember to find time to engage in play every day! A great way to begin your learning each day is with fine motor warm-ups. Daily Fine Motor Warm-Ups:

1. Practice printing your name using an uppercase letter for the first letter and lowercase letters for the rest (if you can already do this practice printing your first AND last name).

2. Practice zipping or buttoning up a coat/ jacket/sweater– try three times by yourself before asking for help.

3. Learn how to tie your shoelaces. Here is a video from an Occupational Therapist that shows one way. Tying Shoes https://youtu.be/o4q2vKlvuXM

__________________________________________________________________ Demonstration of Learning Please upload documentation of your child’s completed work to myBlueprint for the ‘Blue Jay Math Problem’, ‘Be a Nest Engineer’ and an example of your Letter N printing. These must be uploaded by Sunday at 8 pm. If you need any assistance, please email us at [email protected] and [email protected]. __________________________________________________________________

Learning Outcomes Being Addressed This Week: Literacy: I can hear when words rhyme and generate rhyming words. I can draw pictures and experiment with writing to share my ideas. I can ask and answer questions after listening to stories. I can read the popcorn words (sight words) we have learned so far. Numeracy: I can solve open-ended math problems in more than one way. I can name and tell about shapes I see around me. I can make my own repeating patterns. I can use measurement to compare two objects. __________________________________________________________________

Activity/Task #1: Google Meet with Teachers Description of Activity or Task: In small groups, you will have a 15-minute time slot to video chat with the teachers and other classmates on Google Meet. Please see above for Google Meet groups/time slots and the link. Please come prepared with a letter N object to share. We will be learning the letter N sound, how to print the letter Nn and our popcorn word (sight word) ‘no’. We will be singing a song called, “Nannygoat Nellie” and sharing our ideas to the question: What animals build nests? Estimate of Time Required: 15 minutes Resources: Google Meet, Laptop/computer or iPad/tablet

Activity/Task #2: Letter N Printing with StoryBots Description of Activity or Task: On a page with dotted lines, practice printing the letter Nn. Please write it ten times in uppercase, and ten times in lowercase. After you

are finished, watch the Letter N StoryBots Video. Restart the video to watch it a second time but this time keep your finger on the pause button. When you see a letter N word, pause the video. Draw the letter N object and write the letter N word. Try to draw three different objects with their N word. We love to watch these videos to introduce a new letter and build our vocabulary! For an extra challenge, make signs to label items in your house that begin with N (noodles, night light, note). Estimate of Time Required: 20 minutes Resources: Pencil, paper with dotted lines, computer or iPad/tablet https://youtu.be/CZG0GQTskhE

Activity/Task #3: N is for Number Description of Activity or Task: Draw a picture of yourself. Label it with numbers that are important to you (your age, number of people in your family, the number on your home, etc.) Choose one of these numbers and represent it with tally marks, in a ten frame and with blocks / objects.

Activity/Task #1: The Case of the Abandoned Home (Nests)

Description of Activity or Task: Watch “SCOUT & The Gumbook Kids: The Case of the Abandoned Home” on CBC Kids. In a notebook or on a piece of paper, record the three clues they use to solve the case. Questions for adults to ask after the episode:

• What did you learn about nests? • What do some birds use to make a nest? • Have you ever seen a nest? Where? • Why are robin’s eggs blue? • Have you heard birds singing lately? Do you know what types

of birds are chirping? Estimate of Time Required: 15 minutes Resources: Paper and writing tool, Laptop/computer or iPad/tablet https://youtu.be/2rGLYMAnIUQ

Activity/Task #2: Robin Building a Nest Description of Activity or Task: Watch this video of a robin building its nest. Robin Building Nest What do you notice? Some were on the ground and some were in the tree. Where were the Blue Jays? Can you solve it another way? Draw your ideas and print the numbers for how many Blue Jays were on the ground and how many were in the tree. Extra Challenge:

Activity/Task #1: Storytime with Mrs. Prangnell Description of Activity or Task: N is for Nest. Follow along with Mrs. Prangnell as she reads the picture book, “The Nest That Wren Built”. Mrs. Prangnell is reading this book from a special location in Fish Creek Park. It’s an outside classroom with wooden benches, a little library and a “Poet Tree”! Can you hear the birds chirping? What animals do you see in the right-hand corner at the start of the video? Estimate of Time Required: 5 minutes Resources: Computer or iPad/tablet https://youtu.be/aHwiebV7s2o

Activity/Task #2: Be a Nest Engineer! Description of Activity or Task: Did you know that there are many animals that build nests - not just birds? Squirrels, honeybees, beavers, prairie dogs, frogs, harvest mice, sea turtles and alligators all make nests! Some animals build their nests in trees while others build them on the ground or in burrows. Are you ready to be a nest engineer? Your challenge is to design and build an animal nest. You may use materials found in your recycling bin or objects found in nature. Make sure your nest can fit an egg or something small inside it. Share the story of your nest. Who does it belong to? What did that animal use to make it? Estimate of Time Required: 30 minutes Resources: Recycled materials &/or items from nature

Activity/Task #3: Nest Measurement Description of Activity or Task: Use the nest you built to explore measurement. You may use items of the same size (e.g. blocks) or a ruler to measure.

1. How tall is your nest? 2. Name something that is taller than your nest. Smaller than your

nest. 3. How big around is your nest? (We like to use string first and then

measure the length of the string). 4. How heavy is your nest? Find an item in your home that you

think weighs the same amount. Put your nest in one hand and the item in your other hand. Use your arms like a scale. Do they feel the same? If not, try another item.

5. Name something that is lighter than your nest. Heavier than your nest.

Estimate of Time Required: 15 minutes Resources: Your nest, blocks or a ruler, various items __________________________________________________________________
