School Uniform Policy

St Wilfrid’s High school holds high expectations and standards for our young people. We encourage a professional environment, preparing our young people for the world of work and employability. St Wilfrid’s school has a long standing reputation in the local community for being a school that is well respected for its high standards. We hold a history of the wearing of school uniform and we encourage our students to wear their uniform with pride marking their distinct identity as part of the St Wilfrid’s community. We do not believe that ‘fashion’ or ‘trends’ should influence the school uniform. We promote professional conduct and presentation from students at all times.

Purpose The wearing of uniform removes opportunities for peer pressure and bullying. All students are dressed to the same professional standard. Although the initial expense of a school uniform may be costly over time it is more affordable, avoids conflict and it is more manageable both for the students and their parents.

Scope This policy will be used by all staff in conjunction with the School’s Positive behaviour policy and will apply rewards and sanctions regarding uniform to all students regardless of age and ability.

The reporting of ongoing uniform issues by staff will require liaison with the head of Year who will act to resolve the issues and issue further sanctions as necessary.

The Headteacher, acting on behalf of the Governing body, will be the final arbiter and students not conforming to the regulation uniform and not willing to resolve any issues will be sent home to change or will be isolated within school.

Responsibility Students and the wearing of the School Uniform correctly is the responsibility of all members of the school community – students, parents and staff.

The wearing of school uniform is an essential requirement and should be worn to and from school as well as in and around school. We expect the full support of parents in maintaining a high standard of dress and presentation.

School and Staff Commitment

As a school and as members of staff we will: Regularly remind students of the School uniform rules and expectations in assemblies, form tutor time

and in lessons. Recognise and praise efforts made by students who wear their uniform correctly using achievement

points. Act as positive role models for students. Be approachable, responsive and alert to any problems at home that could cause difficulties with Uniform

and inform the pastoral team who will find a way in which to resolve the problem. Recognise, correct and issue sanctions for the incorrect wearing of the School Uniform in line with the

School’s ‘Promoting Positive Behaviour Policy.’

Student Commitment

As students we will: Wear the correct items of clothing as stated in the School’s Uniform Policy. Wear the School’s Uniform correctly eg. shirt tucked in and ties clipped to the collar with the top button

fastened. Wear the appropriate footwear as stated in the School’s Uniform Policy. Wear our hair in a hairstyle and colour which meets the requirements of the Policy and the regular

reminders and updates about this in school. Try our best to keep our uniform clean and presentable in school. Where appropriate draw attention to issues and requests for possible changes to the uniform rules and

expectations via the student council Groups.

Parental Commitment

As parents/carers we will:

Give our full support in maintaining a high standard of dress and presentation and the correct wearing of school uniform to and from school as well as in and around school.

Alert the student’s Form Tutor or Head of Year if a child has difficulty meeting the School Uniform requirements.

Provide medical information or a letter from the GP if there are any medical reasons why the wearing of the School Uniform is difficult or needs modifying to meets that individuals needs.

Provide students with the correct items of clothing for their School Uniform and restrict them from buying incorrect or inappropriate items.

Restrict hairstyles to those that are accepted by the school and check with the Head of Year and/or the Uniform Guidance section in the Student’s Planner, if unsure before agreeing to something different (if what your child is requesting seems unusual, fashion led or extreme it is probably not allowed).

Help the child to maintain a clean and tidy appearance with their uniform and personal hygiene.

The Uniform

Examples of the approved and agreed uniform for each key stage is available in the student planner and on the website. They are also presented below. The uniform must be worn correctly :

On arrival at school, When travelling home from school, When exiting the tennis courts or leaving the school fields at the end of break or lunch time.

The uniform consists of: An official school blazer. School clip on tie A grey school ‘V’ necked cardigan or pullover. Boys – grey or black socks Girls – grey or black tights (60 denier minimum) or white socks. Fashion tights are not permitted. Black low heeled full shoes. TRAINERS, PLIMSOLS AND BOOTS ARE NOT ALLOWED. In bad weather a coat will be needed. Leather, faux leather, hoodies or denim coats are not allowed. Boys in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 wear a grey shirt and dark grey/black TAILORED uniform trousers. Jeans and

skinny/canvas trousers are not permitted. Girls in Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 wear a yellow blouse, black TAILORED uniform trousers or a grey skirt of knee

length (no jersey/stretch material). Flared or tight fitting skinny trousers and trousers with additional embellishments are not allowed.

Girls in Year 11 wear a white blouse, black TAILORED uniform trousers or a grey skirt of knee length (no jersey/stretch material). Flared or tight fitting skinny trousers and trousers with additional embellishments are not allowed.

Boys in Year 11 wear a white shirt and dark grey/black TAILORED uniform trousers. Jeans and skinny canvas trousers are not permitted.

Year 10 and 11 students wear an upper school clip on tie. The wearing of KS4 tie and Year 11 white shirt is dependent on the student conforming to our dress code. Any form of piercings are not permitted for any student in Years 7 to 11. Code of dress:

Shirts must be tucked in, top buttons must be fastened, blazers and ties must be worn. During the summer months short sleeved school shirts may be worn. During lessons students will be permitted to remove blazers.

Extreme hair styles and colours (including patterns or lines) are not allowed in school. No Jewellery other than a watch is permitted. Makeup nail varnish, acrylics, gels or false nails are not allowed. Persistent issues with uniform will be monitored by the pastoral team by report card to ensure expectations are followed. Students whose uniform or appearance is not in line with the school dress code will work in isolation area of school until the matter is resolved. This ensures we are consistent and fair to all students and families.

The school PE kit can only be purchased from the school shop. Please make sure all your items are clearly marked with your name, this way they will be returned to you if handed in to lost property
