PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger
WELCOME Welcome to 2019 at Barton Primary School. Welcome back to our students and families for our third year as a school. A very special welcome to our new staff, students and families. It was so pleasing to see so many happy faces as they walked through the gate on Day 1. We work hard to ensure that your child’s school experiences are positive and our reward is excellent learning growth and happy students. Our school has established itself in a very short time as one of the leading primary schools. We constantly strive for what is best for each student and our evidence is very clear in the learning progress our students made in 2018. Our success largely hinges on the calibre of our teaching team. I am very proud of our expanding team not only for their dedication to their role but also to the way they have embraced how we do things at Barton Primary School. All of our staff gave up part of their vacation to attend professional development sessions to ensure that they were ready for the start of the school year. This dedication to their role ensures that your child will receive the best possible learning opportunities here at Barton Primary School. We are looking forward to a year of outstanding academic and personal achievement for all. NEW STAFF 2019 I would like to officially welcome our new staff for 2019. We have new and returning teachers across all teaching teams. Please go to our website to find out a little bit more about each of them.

FAREWELL TO BECCY FALKAM Today we said a very fond farewell to Beccy Falkam our Administration Manager as she commences her leave to start her family. Beccy was the first person I employed when establishing Barton PS and has been instrumental in setting up many of our processes, procedures and establishing a very calm and welcoming reception area. Since we started Beccy has been the main contact for our new families and she has welcomed everyone to our school in a happy and responsive way. We will miss her exemplary work ethic, attention to detail and her leadership of the Administration team. We wish her all the best with her new role!
OUR NEW PREPS What a smooth start for our new Preps. They have all settled in well to their learning in a very short space of time. Our detailed and comprehensive transition program contributes greatly to this, as does the preparation that our teachers have done to ensure that the learning is relevant and engaging. There are more Prep photos on our website.

8.55AM IS THE TIME OUR CLASSES START – DON’T BE LATE If you are arriving at 8.55am in the morning you are already late. Our teachers are committed to ensuring that we maximise the learning time for your child. This was explained very clearly at your time of enrolment. Please assist us by ensuring you have your child at school prior to 8.55am. Our gates are open from 8.30am. When you arrive late it causes:
an interruption to your child’s learning
an interruption to the learning of the rest of the class
your child to become anxious
adds to the administrative workload of the office staff
a formal letter from the Department of Education. A student’s late arrival data is recorded on their school report. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your child arrives in enough time to get to their first class. CLASS TIMETABLES So that parents can get a better understanding about what is going on in their child’s class we have forwarded a copy of the class timetable. This outlines when and how much time your child has with each particular subject. This is a great discussion point for you and your child to have to prepare them for their learning for the day or to reflect on what they have done in each timetabled activity. OPEN MORNINGS Each term we provide an opportunity for parents to visit our learning areas so that they can see their child’s learning in action. We are currently drafting a timetable for this and will let parents know early next week. We plan to conduct them in Week 4 – 18th – 22nd February. More information to follow. RIDING BIKES AND SCOOTERS TO SCHOOL It is the parent’s decision to ensure that their child is road safe prior to them riding a bike or scooter to school. It is my suggestion that if your child is still using training wheels then they are not ready or safe enough to ride to school. All scooters and bikes are to enter the school ground via the bike gate which is the small gate past the staff car park in Everlasting Boulevard. Students are permitted to ride on the path into the school yard but must dismount once they get to the drinking tap near the oval. All bikes and scooters are then stored in the bike shed securely. It is also the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child is wearing an approved bike helmet if they are riding their bike/scooter to school. Wearing of an approved helmet is our school policy. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – Mark Cooper
Welcome everyone back to the new school year. It has been such a positive experience for all of
our new and returning students. The Learning Hubs look terrific and it has been a buzz to see the
exciting learning already happening. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our
teachers and support staff to make the start of the school year so smooth and positive.
Well done also to all of our new preps that started
this week. Our teachers have talked so positively
about the new group and eager to give them the
best possible start to their schooling.
A reminder about the road rules around our school.
There is no double parking on any of our streets.
This is a real road hazard and an accident just
waiting to happen. Please take the time to park up
the street further to ensure the safety of all of our
students.
Secondly a reminder about organising the right pick up strategy for your family. We have had
some instances this week where students have gone home to the wrong house and parents have
come to the school really concerned as their student hasn’t come home after school. Could you
please reiterate the pickup procedures with your child so there is no confusion. This will help us
keep all of our student’s safe in coming and going home from school.
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and look forward to a great week 3 next week.
Thanks Mark Cooper

GRADE 2 NEWS
“We can be safe in the classroom and
outside by keeping our hands and feet
to ourselves and moving sensibly
around the school. We can also wear
our hats and sunscreen outside so we
don’t get burnt.” (Ishaan ~ 2D)
“Learning is about having a growth
mindset when you don’t know something.
We also read our Learning Intention and
Success Criteria before we find our
successful place to work” (Angel ~ 2C) “Responsibility means
looking after your
belongings as well as taking
care of our environment”
(Aaria ~ 2E)
Success means trying our hardest
to complete our work. We show
the Barton 5 and keep eye contact
when someone is talking. We
concentrate on our work and avoid
distractions” (Eva ~ 2B)
“Respect is about treating others how we
want to be treated ourselves. Respect is
looking and listening to someone when they
are talking to you. When we sit on the floor
we show the Barton 5” (Thamasha ~ 2A)

GRADE 3-6 NEWS
Grade 3-6 learning The grade 3-6 students have jumped straight into their learning and have
been working hard on activities that focus on our school values and rules
as well as our emotions and behaviour. We have been very impressed with
the determination and respect displayed by the students and are excited
for the year ahead!
We have been focusing on respect
and what it looks and sounds like in
the classroom and school yard. We
have also had a big focus on
problem solving and teamwork and
have been completing some hands
on activities where students are
working together.
All students have been settling into
our new learning hub which consists
of two relocatable classrooms. We
are very lucky to have these
classrooms painted orange so they
fit right in with our school.
In 5/6 sport, the students have been
lucky enough to already begin
participating in some clinics
including athletics, hockey and
gymnastics. These clinics have
been fun and it has been fantastic to
see the students enthusiastically
participating.
Reminders Online learning program login details will be sent home
by the end of this week. Please be using these programs
at home.
Students will be able to borrow library books by week 4.
Please remember to send students to school with a fruit
snack, recess snack and lunch.
New Staff
We have welcomed three new
3-6 teachers to Barton Primary
School this year. The students
have made a lot of effort to
make the teachers feel very
welcome. Miss Everest, Miss
Freeman and Miss Barry are
all looking forward to getting to
know the students and we also
welcome Miss Ahern from
grade 1.

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES
The teachers for enviro this year are Miss Dunstan and Mrs Krejic, who we welcome back to
Barton after having a baby last year.
Zero Hero
As we get set for another successful year of reducing our waste at Barton we are reminding our students
to aim for zero rubbish in their lunchbox.
Where possible pack food directly into a reusable container rather than cling wrap or plastic zip lock bags.
Grades who have zero or minimal rubbish may win the Zero Hero trophy for the week and bragging
rights!
This term our focus for learning is water. Prep and
Grade 1 students are learning about the ways we use,
and how we can conserve water, at home and at
school. Grade 2 students are exploring water wildlife
including frogs in our school wetlands. Grade 3-6
students are researching the treatment of water in
south east Victoria and comparing bottled water to
tap water.
