Kia orana, Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori This week we celebrate Maori language week. The kaupapa for this year’s Māori Language Week is Kia Kaha. Te reo Māori Kia Kahais a well-known phrase in New Zealand, meaning ‘be strong’. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māoriwere saying - Lets make the Māori language strong'. At Hikutaia School, we believe it is more than just a one- week celebration. We have been working hard to normalise Te Reo me ona Tikanga as something that is just part of our daily teaching and learning. Kia kaha koutou! Staff Appreciation Week This week is also staff appreciation week. It is a week where we as staff take time out to celebrate our mahi (work) and the things that we do to help your children. I am very fortunate to have a strong and dedicated staff to work alongside and for this I am grateful. Know that the teachers here work relentlessly to help your children succeed to their fullest potential. I would like to on behalf of the parents and community to thank the staff for their amazing commitment. School Speeches I would like to congratulate all the students who presented their speeches in front of their classes last week. Obtaining important facts and putting them into a speech then to get up in front of your class is not an easy task to do but a skill that can be developed. Our Year 5 8’s results from last Thursday are as follows: Year 5 1 st Quinn Torstonson, 2 nd Jye Morrison & 3 rd Bella Walmsley Year 6 1 st Jesse Wright & 2 nd Amber Perry Year 7 1 st Kaeden Torstonson, 2 nd Abigail Cox Year 8 1 st Milah McGahan, 2 nd Travis Cox & 3 rd Natavia Metekingi We wish Quinn, Jesse, Kaeden and Milah all the best on Friday as they present their speeches at the Thames Primary School Competition being held at Thames South. The children will be helping to write bilingual books as part of their literacy learning, to share with the rest of the school. Room 2 students will be coming home with a permission slip regarding a trip next week for a soccer tournament in Thames. If you could please sign these and send them back to me ASAP, that would be greatly appreciated. Touch notices will be coming home this week for those children who have put their names down to play. Games start next Thursday the 19th. Speech finals are this Friday. Well done to those children who have made it into this. There were some excellent speeches this year and judging was very difficult. Lastly, good luck to Gracie who is headed to the AIMS games this week, competing in BMX. Have a fantastic week everyone, Ngaa Mihi nui - Olivia Robinson, Whaea Emma and Matua Wayne

Room 5 Mrs Donovan Kia ora from ruma rima (room five). This week we are celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and will be completing work on this all week. We aim to learn to use more Te Reo in our conversations and understand instructions in Māori. Look out for a Calf Club Newsletter in school bags and please send in your egg cartons for the mask. This is teacher appreciation week and the teachers at school have a secret teacher to appreciate, so should be lots of fun. Remember a lot of your children's work is online and can be viewed at home via Google Classroom or Google Drive. Have a great week. Kind Regards, Angela Donovan

Room 4: Mr Bax This week we are beginning to create our arts and crafts for Ag day. More information will come through the week about what we are making and the materials required. In Maths we are practising our strategies to add and subtract numbers. On Tuesday we are visiting the library and we are continuing our upcycling projects in Topic. Have a great week.

Room 3: Mrs Cameron Today a notice will come home with your child outlining the display activities that the children do for Ag week in Week 1, Term 4. Most of these are done at school. Your child will need to bring an egg carton and a woollen pom pom, the size of a tennis ball, to school this week so we can make a start on the displays. Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. A permission slip will also come home this week regarding our visit to Ohinemuri House, as part of our kindness inquiry. Some children are not returning their notebooks on Friday. I check their high frequency words and spelling lists on Friday, as well as enter the readers for the following week. If you could support your child in returning the note book on Friday, it would be greatly appreciated. Lastly we welcome Rex Voss and his family to Room 3. Kei a koe te wiki pai.
