Security Cameras Cape St. Claire Elementary School is equipped with a video camera system. It co-vers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of stu-dents may be in question, authorized person-nel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Super-visor of School Security at 410-222-5083.

Halloween Happenings Cape St. Claire Elementary has a long-standing tradition of holding a Halloween party and costume parade. Students may wear their costumes to school on October 31. No costumes may be worn that include a mask or a weapon of any type. Class parties will begin at 1:45 and the parade will begin at 2:15. Homeroom parents will be arranging snacks and activities for the festivities. We understand that not all families celebrate Halloween and may not want their students to participate in the activities. If you do not want your

students participating in the parade or festivities, please send a note to the classroom teacher. The parade occurs in front of the building in the bus loop and along the sidewalk on Blue Ridge. We will secure the location as much as possible as this is an outside event. Parents often take pictures dur-ing the parade as well. Please keep this in mind as you consider your student’s participation.

Arrival and Dismissal Safety

Please keep in mind that student safety is our top priority. We ask that all parents be patient and be aware of their surround-ings and the children moving about. Please slow down when en-tering the driveway and pull all the way up to the designated drop off zone. Be sure to follow the directions of staffers and volunteers. Students should have all belongings organized and be ready to exit or enter the car immediately. Students are not permitted to travel through the parking lot without parent su-pervision. If you are parking, be sure to escort your child through the crosswalk and to the front doors of the school. Al-ways follow the signals of the crossing guards and teach your children to only cross safely in crosswalks.

When waiting for your child to leave school, we kindly ask all family members to keep the sidewalks clear so that school staff can see and properly supervise students as they exit the building. Fami-ly members can wait behind the wall in the front of the school or on the ‘patio’ where the portable used to be located. Remember, dogs (and other animals) are not allowed on school property during arrival and dismissal. Thank you in advance for your co- operation with these safety initiatives.

Cape St. Claire Dismissal Sequence

The student dismissal sequence is as follows:

Buses Day Care Vans

Walkers/Car Riders SACC

This sequence will allow the students walking home to leave after the majority of traffic has been dispersed. In order to ensure a safe and orderly departure, early dismissals for individual stu-dents must occur prior to 2:30. After that time, we kindly ask that you allow your child to follow the regular dismissal routine. Students should know their routine and be prepared to exit the building accordingly. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Federal Impact Aid Surveys On Friday, September 29, 2018, your child brought home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form. Please assist us by filling out the infor-mation requested on the form and returning it to Cape St. Claire Elementary.

The U.S. Department of Education has now requested a separate survey form for each child and each survey form must be signed and dated by the Parent/Guardian. We will also be using our Connect-Ed Automated Telephone Notification System to remind everyone about the significance of completing and returning this survey. The school system receives approximately $2 million in funding from the Federal Government in support of our children after the forms are processed.

Thank you in advance for your support and assistance. Should you have any questions regarding this information, please contact the Central office at 410-222-5200. Remember to sign up for an account with ParentCONNECTxp. ParentCONNECTxp is a secure web-based program which enables par-ents to access their children's school records including class assign-ments, current class grades, marking period report cards and at-tendance.

Classroom Counseling Lessons: Happy Fall! I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather! The first round of classroom counseling lessons focused on the role of the school counselor and reviewed the DEBUG strategy for dealing with people who are bothering us. Here are the steps so you can review them at home:

Ignore – try to ignore the person bothering you

Talk Friendly – nicely ask the person to stop

Talk Firmly – ask again for the person to stop

Move Away – get away from the person bothering you, if you can

Tell an Adult – ask an adult to help you solve the problem

October’s lessons are focusing on Growth Mindset and Problem Solv-ing. Growth mindset is like perseverance. We will talk about ways to keep working even when the work is hard. The Problem Solving lessons will focus on solving problems with friends. Human Relations Committee:

Our student representatives from each classroom in fourth, and fifth grade have been selected. Our first project will be the Kids Helping Kids Harvest for the Hungry Campaign. This year we will be col-lecting non-perishable food donations dur-ing the month of October. Monetary do-nations are also accepted. Each dollar do-nated is equivalent to eight pounds of food! Please look for more information to come regarding specific dates for the col-lection.

October is a busy and exciting month for kindergarteners. We are still studying topics in Theme 1: The Power of Me/I Belong, fol-lowed by “I Need”. We will be exploring questions, such as, “What makes a family?”, “How can I be a good citizen?” and “What do I need to stay healthy?” We have been identifying letters Aa-Zz and will continue to identi-fy sight words; can, I, my, in, it, to, a, am, like, and me. During the month of October we will begin working on learning letter sounds. In reading we will continue to identify rhyming words as we play games and listen to stories. We have also been working on writing first names. This can be reinforced at home with children by writ-ing their first name with the first capital letter and remainder lowercase letters. In math we have been working on shapes and counting to 31. We will move on to numbers 0 through 10 and understanding the numbers. Counting, writing and building the numbers will be part of math. At home your child can practice their number sense by matching the number to items counted or building sets in different ways to rep-resent 0 through 10. Children love to do this with snacks such as goldfish. We are looking forward to the Halloween parade and celebration at the end of the month. Please be on the lookout for further infor-mation on this Cape St. Claire tradition. Thank you for helping to start the school year off successfully.

Our first graders are quickly adapting to new routines. They have grown so much since kindergarten and are ready to face new chal-lenges and experiences. Please remember students enter school at 8:15 a.m. when the first bell rings. Second bell is at 8:30 a.m. when all students are expected to be in their seats ready for instruction.

This month we are curious about our natural world and changes in our environment. How do seasons create change? How does the sun af-fect weather patterns? What causes day and night? How does our changing environment affect us and how can we protect it? Through exploration, reading, and writing, we will discover and share the an-swers! Information will be gained by identifying the main topic and retelling key details, as well as noting similarities and differences be-tween two texts. We will continue to describe characters, settings, and major events and make connections to ourselves and the world.

Our trip to the Broadneck Library is in October. Please check the permission slip to see when your class is going. This is a great oppor-tunity for our budding readers to become familiar with our local li-brary, the media it offers, the librarian as a service worker, and un-derstand what it means to be a responsible library patron.

We continue to develop mathematical practices as we solve problems within 20. Students make sense of the problem, use tools, and model and explain their thinking. We are learning to agree, disagree, and justify our answers through daily “math talk”. Mental math strate-gies are being introduced as we become fluent with addition and sub-traction facts. Remember to practice at home!

What small moments in our lives can we share with others? Students are writing narratives about these moments and revising their work in order to make their writing more interesting. Longer words are spelled using “Say it, Slide it, Hear it, Write it”! Ask your child to show you! Our writers love sharing their stories with friends!

As the weather changes, please remember to write names in jackets and coats. We look forward to getting fresh air and exercising our minds and bodies each day during recess!

It’s hard to believe we are already into October and approaching the

end of the first marking period. We will be contacting classroom par-

ents soon to share information about Halloween happenings. Also, our

first field trip is coming up soon. We are planning to visit the Chesa-

peake Bay Environmental Research Center in Grasonville. This will en-

rich and extend students understand of our impact on environments

and the abundance of natural resources found in our area.

As we approach the end of the first marking period, 2nd graders

should be accustomed to classroom routines and teacher expecta-

tions. In math, students will be deepening concepts of place value

and learning to decompose multi-digit numbers. Please continue to

practice basic addition and subtraction math facts at home. In sci-

ence and social studies, students are learning about the effects hu-

mans have on their environments. Students have been participating

in our primary talent development unit of Tremendous Trees and are

entering the unit Persevering Problem Solvers. The lessons in this

unit will enable students to explore how people can have a positive

and negative impact on our environment by identifying an environmen-

tal problem. They have an opportunity to work with a group to make

an action plan to solve that problem.

We encourage parents to continue to read to and with children on a

nightly basis. Look for report cards to come home in November.

Please sign and return the report card envelope. Thank you for all

you do at home to support us.

Cool breezes, long sleeves, and pumpkin spice are invading! It’s Octo-ber! In case you missed back to school night, your third-grade teach-ers this year are Ms. Garrett, Mrs. Wilkinson, Mrs. Weller, and Mrs. Ziemer. Third grade is an exciting, challenging, and rewarding year for everyone. The students are encouraged to be more responsible and more independent as they enter the intermediate grades. We are ex-cited to work together to teach your child and help them have fun while learning. Here is a glance at what we are studying in the upcoming weeks: Science: Our first quarter is focused on forces and motion. Students are learning about position, distance, motion, and speed. We have en-gaged in scientific experiments to explore friction, forces, and motion. Coming up we are experimenting with pendulums. The goal is that stu-dents have a chance to develop the understanding that some objects move in a pattern and that these are examples of predictable motion. These patterns can help us predict future motion. Math: Third graders are becoming experts on the concepts of multi-plication and division! They can tell about facts involving 10, 2, 1, 0, and 5. We will use these foundations of multiplication and division to study area, particularly of rectangles. Later in the month, we are moving onto developing strategies for addition and subtraction with two and three-digit numbers. We will learn various strategies so all our students are math wizards! Social Studies: Students have been discovering the different ways we can get from place to place. We are looking at maps, globes, cardinal directions, and atlases. Third graders have taken a closer look at our state, county, and even city! Geography is our focus this quarter. Stu-dents are learning about natural and man-made features, as well as the communities people live in. As you travel around the state for sports, vacations, or errands, take time to notice the man-made and natural features that surround us. Literacy We have worked on story elements, main idea and details, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and making predictions so far. Coming up we will be exploring how to sequence, draw conclusions, what the author’s purpose is, and what central message is the author trying to convey. We continue to build an understanding of writing a personal narrative and use the method “Show not Tell”. Please continue to work with your child on spelling and studying those words!

A few friendly reminders: • Please check their graded papers folders weekly, review them with your child, sign it, keep the papers, and return the folder to school.

• Homework: Your child will be writing all assignments and reminders in their agenda books. Please check the agenda books and take-home folder each night for notice of upcoming events, projects, etc. It is the responsibility of the student to bring the teacher the note if there is one inside of the agenda. You can expect that there will be math and language arts homework nightly. The agenda books must travel back and forth to school daily with their take home fold-ers. This way the students will be able to make changes if necessary.

• Special Request: We are doing many special projects in marking period one. We need lots of materials for these projects and luckily, most of these items are recyclable. Please send in any cardboard, toi-let paper tubes, paper towel tubes, string, popsicle sticks, straws, rubber bands, tape. These make the projects much more exciting! As always, if you have questions- please contact your child’s teacher. Enjoy Autumn!

Fourth grade is off to an awesome start! In Math, we’ve started us-ing our knowledge of place value to add and subtract, and eventually we’ll move on to multiplying and dividing bigger numbers than we’ve ever used before. In Social Studies, we’re learning about explorers and the benefits and consequences of their exploration. Students are deciding if these well-known explorers are heroes or villains (or a mixture of both). In Science, we’ve been studying plant and animal systems that help with survival. It’s always an exciting time when there’s a carnivorous plant involved! In Language Arts we’ve been focusing on the theme of a story (a skill that will come up often this year). We’ve also been writing our own realistic fiction. A lot of work is going in to these pieces and we can’t wait to share them with you. Look out for the following that will be coming home in October:

1.Interim reports (please sign and send back) 2.Notice about parent/teacher conferences

OCTOBER 2018 It has been a great start to the school year in physical education. The students have been working very hard learning new skills and con-cepts. Students in grades 3rd – 5th began the year by participating in football skills unit. During this unit, the students learned about throwing, catching, carrying, and kicking a football. The students also learned offensive strategies such as moving to open space that can be applied to a variety of sports. Students in grades K – 2nd began the year by participating in a locomo-tor skills/basic movement unit. The students learned how to move safely around the gym while also performing skills such as walking, running, jumping, hopping, galloping, sliding, skipping, and leaping. This unit also utilized a variety of tag games to introduce the concepts of personal space and general space. During the month of October, all students will participate in a fitness unit. This unit will include utilizing the climbing wall as well as a varie-ty of health-related fitness concepts. Students in grades 4th and 5th will also complete their fall Fitnessgram assessments (they will also complete a spring Fitnessgram assessment). Please make note of when your child has Physical Ed-ucation so they can wear or bring tennis shoes and appropriate clothes for physical activity on those days. Thank you for your support and we are looking forward to a great October.

From the Health Room

Parents please take a few minutes to discuss with your child/children when it is and is NOT appropri-ate to go to the Health Room. For the first month back to school this year, we have had an increase in visits to the health room for illness, injury, re-

quests to call home, etc. yet only a few children actually went home. Part of helping us meet our mission to keep your child healthy so they are available for learning is limiting unnecessary Health Room visits. If you have any questions or concerns about your child please call Kerry French, HA or Amy Kehs, RN at 410-222-1689.

Kindergarten: students are working on creating self-portraits. Dur-ing this project, we are considering all the things that make us a unique individual! While learning and practicing the expectations of the art room, our self-portraits are allowing us to utilize our draw-ing, painting, and collage skills. 1st Grade: students have been making connections to the monarch butterfly unit in their classrooms. We have been learning about the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical and notic-ing how butterflies show symmetry. We are working to create a beautifully sym-metrical monarch butterfly of our own by using a technique called squish painting. We will be using printing techniques to create a milkweed habitat for our but-terfly to live. 2nd Grade: students have been working to create sketchbooks. Our sketchbooks will be kept in the classroom throughout the year and will be used to practice our drawing technique. Students will then be moving on to consider how artists can be inspired by the world around them. With autumn in mind, students will be creating leaf prints and experimenting with utilizing warm and cool colors. 3rd Grade: students have been working to complete their sketch-books. On the cover of our sketchbooks we created nametags that placed emphasis and patterns in the negative space around our name! Our sketchbooks will be kept in the classroom throughout the year and will be used to practice skills for upcoming projects. Next, we will begin exploring the work of Roy Lichtenstein as we create an onomatopoeia pop art inspired collage!

4th Grade: students have been working to create an interactive mural inspired by the artist Kelsey Montague and her series #WhatLiftsYou. Kelsey Montague is known all over the world for painting beautiful wings that people can stop in front of and have their photo taken. Kel-sey was even commissioned by the Annapolis Towne Center to create a set of Annapolis inspired wings. Each student has been busy creating a feather that will be combined with others to create a set of wings for our school! Once complete, students will be moving on to creating their sketchbooks. Our sketchbooks will be kept in the classroom throughout the year and will be used to practice skills for upcoming projects.

Artsonia will soon be up and running! Please keep an eye out for permis-sion slips to come home! If your artist was part of Artsonia last year, you will not have to complete another permission form. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at [email protected]. Please remember that Artsonia is a great way to build confidence and pride in young artists! Please remember that art class can get a little messy! Please encour-age your child to bring an art shirt or art smock to school. It should be stored in their locker and can be pulled out every week before Art Class.

Spooky Strings

Winter Concert

OCTOBER 2018

CULTURAL ARTS

Strings Ms. McCusker

By now all strings students have been to class and received their first few lessons and are aquatinted with reading the

strings schedule. Beginning strings might be asking about when they will learn to use the bow. Please re-

mind them to wait a few more weeks before we tackle that next milestone. We have to first understand plucking AKA “pizzicato” and how to play a few short

tunes using different pitches on single strings. They are always eager to play with the bow but if you can remind them to

wait until we start that unit in class things will run more smoothly. First year strings students should all have their own copy of the Es-sential Elements 2000 book 1 brown cover in their possession. All sec-

ond and third year strings students should have Essential Elements 2000 book 2 it has the purple cover. We will use these as a resource

along with sheet music, scales etc. throughout the year. Fifth grade advanced strings students will be invited to participate in

Spooky Strings an annual event held at Magothy and Severn River mid-dle schools. The date for Spooky Strings this year is Wednesday Oc-

tober 24th. The event is held after school. I will be sending out via email participation forms for all fifth graders at the beginning of Oc-tober. This event is optional but well worth attending. Broadneck High,

both middle schools and all elementary schools in our cluster partici-pate in this event.

Our winter concert is scheduled this year for Thursday December 13th at 6:30pm here at our school. The Chorus, band and intermediate

and advanced strings will perform. Beginning strings will have their own concert in late January-early February. Once I get a firm date I

will notify parents. Thank you for having your children participate in orchestra at our

school. If you are not receiving emails from me please send me yours at [email protected] and make sure you write “Cape St. Claire

strings” in the subject to identify yourself.

Reading

OCTOBER 2018

READING CORNER

Reading Specialists Mrs. Burrows, Ms. Dimka

It is with great pleasure we welcome you back to a fun-filled, productive, and literate year at Cape St. Claire Elementary.

Kindergarteners will be participating in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event on Thursday, October 25th. They will be joining other students all over the United States in an attempt to set a new World’s Record for stu-dents reading the same book on the same day. This year’s book is “Maybe Something Beautiful”. This event is designed to raise public awareness about the educational importance of early childhood literacy, and community involvement for all children.

Picture This! Using Mental Imagery While Reading By: Reading Rockets One way to help a child comprehend what he is reading is to encourage him to visualize parts of the story in his mind. These "mind movies" help clarify information, increase understanding, and can include any of the five senses. Try these practices below when reading with your child.

•Begin reading. Pause after a few sentences or paragraphs that contain good descriptive information.

•Share the image you've created in your mind, and talk about which words from the book helped you "draw" your picture. Your picture can relate to the setting, the characters, or the actions. By doing this, you are modeling the kind of picture making you want your child to do.

•Talk about how these pictures help you understand what's happening in the story.

•Continue reading. Pause again and share the new image you created. Then ask your child to share what he sees, hears, tastes, smells and feels. Ask what words helped him create the mental image and emotions. By doing this, you are providing your child with practice with this new skill.

•Are your images identical? Probably not! This is a great time to talk about why your images might be different.
