  • Lab Rascals — Inspiring the next generation of

    scientists and engineers.

    Schools Information Guide

  • Lab Rascals - About us!

We are an award winning interactive science

entertainment company in Yorkshire and the Humber. We

educate, inspire and entertain children with the

magnificent world of science and engineering.

Due to our extensive research at the University of Hull into

children’s perceptions of science we leave all the “flashes

and bangs” in the Lab bring only the most enjoyable and

engaging hands-on experimentation into your classroom.

Every Lab Rascals workshops are led by DBS checked

highly trained scientists with a minimum of a masters

degree in chemistry, astronomy, physics or engineering.

    Our Objectives

To inspire and engage children in to science and engineering at a young age

    via fun hands-on experimentation.

To change the negative perception of science being all “flashes and bangs”

which most children associate with danger.

To encourage children into science and engineering careers with is vital for

the future growth of the UK economy.

    Our Standards

All workshops are tested and evaluated to ensure the highest of quality.

All lead staff have a degree of above in a science based subject.

We are passionate about inspiring and educating children.

We are positive scientific role models.

  • What people are saying about us!

    Mrs Hartley

“Me and my son came to the dry ice workshop -

absolutely loved it, he couldn't stop smiling afterwards!

Great fun, really informative, great concept and

    excellently executed. thank you!”

    Mrs Rockett

“My son went to the dry ice and slime workshop and had

an amazing time! The whole set up is brilliant and I

honestly can't recommend it enough! We will definitely

be going to more events! “

    Mrs Prime

“My 7 year old attends the after school clubs and

absolutely loves it; she's excited to go each week and

even more excited about science when she comes out!

She didn't know anyone else when she started but has

settled so well and made new friends. I'd highly

recommend Lab Rascals to anyone with children.”

    Mrs Burvill

“In three days the Lab Rascals have inspired over 400 children, oh yes, and staff. We have a teacher wanting to extract DNA to make a banorange lol x fabulous Science Week treat for the school”

    Ms Brown

“All Science lessons should be like this...audience hooked”

I really enjoyed today. I would have

passed my polymer exam if I did

    your class first.

15 year old boy - Hull

I want to be a scientist like you

    when I’m older.

7 year old girl - Grimsby

I love Lab Rascals. Can you come

and do another science clubs at

    my school?

9 year old girl - Immingham

    This was the best science

    lesson ever!

11 year old girl - Scunthorpe

  • What we offer!

    Lab Rascals Science Workshops

Lab Rascals brings the spark that will inspire and engage the next generation of

scientists to your classroom. Lab Rascals workshops are designed then

extensively tested on hundreds of children to ensure a 100% satisfaction rating.

All Lab Rascals workshops are fully hands-on which is guaranteed to bring out

the scientist is every child and teacher (yes we allow teachers to join in on the fun

    as well).

After School Science and Engineering Clubs.

At a Lab Rascals after school science club children will have the opportunity to complete scientific experiments themselves, from making working models of wind turbines to exploring the properties of dry ice. These clubs are aimed to be fun, educational and inspiring.

Science club are a minimum of five weeks and maximum of 10 weeks.

All Science club bookings receive a free 30 minute assembly.

Children take home something to show their parents at the end of most of

    our workshops.

Every child will receives a free goodie bag at the end of the final science club

    workshop.

  • Our Science Workshops

Dry Ice -The States of Matter The children will discover what sublimation is (solid to gas) by putting dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) in balloons. They will instantly freeze water vapour by making clouds with dry ice and discover when carbon dioxide is dissolved into water a weak acid is formed (acid rain) by using a pH indicator. This is followed by making smoking bubbles just for fun.

Dry ice - Volcanos The children will learn all about volcanos by making dry ice volcanos in small groups. Using dry ice makes the volcanos rumble before erupting to simulate at an earthquake and produce a large cloud before the lava flow.

    Polymers - Material Properties

Have you ever wondered what wood, plastic, nylon and proteins have in common? These are all made up of long repeat chains of molecules scientists call polymers. Many materials are made from polymers which can be found in nature or made in a lab. This workshop teaches children how polymers are made and how crosslinking polymers can change materials. During this workshop the children will make slime and gooey worms which is always a huge hit.

    Light

Light is defined as the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things viable. But what

exactly is it? We observe the wonders of light every day by viewing our reflection in a mirror,

seeing a rainbow appear after a storm, watching a firework display or glimpsing at a straw in a

glass of water. However, these sighting only lead to more questions. Does light travel in

waves? Why do we see colours? What makes fireworks colourful? And what are the common

    properties of light?

During this workshop children will be amazed by discovering how white light is made up of all the colour of the rainbow. The children experiment with coloured filters, polarized filters and more. This is followed by observing how plasma balls can be used to make a light bulb glow and what makes fireworks colourful by watching colourful flames.

  • Our Science Workshops Continued…

    DNA - Genetics and Evolutions

Children are forever hearing things about genetics and evolution without understanding the

true meaning. Over the past few year along the media have published reports on three parent

babies, stem cells, bacteria with an extra genetic letter and many other genetic related

discoveries and developments. Parents often tell their children who they look alike and what

common traits they have in their families. Some parents even point out genetic defects such as

colour blindness, cystic fibrosis and so on. However without a basic understanding of the

genetic code children are often left with many questions.

This workshop introduces the children to the genetic code and evolution by allowing the children to make their own 3D model of DNA and extracting DNA from plant cells.

    Bath Bombs

There is a lot of science to be learnt during make bath bombs which is often over looked.

During this workshop the children will discover how to test the pH of regents using an indicator,

how to neutralise solutions and how some acids and alkalis react together to produce a gas.

Sugar in Drinks (science clubs only)

Sugar is a big topic in the media and has left many parents concerned about the amount of

sugar their child is consuming. Its recommended children have no more than 24 grams a day

however a 500ml bottle of sugary fizzy pop can contain up to 60 grams. Children often

consume sugary fizzy drinks without even taking this into consideration. This workshop

teaches children about sugar content of drinks by allowing children to use analytical chemistry

to test a range of popular drinks.

    Electrostatics (science clubs only)

We notice static electricity when we see ordinary objects attracting or repelling each other, or

when we ourselves become charged and then get an electric shock when charges flow

through us as we touch something. Static electricity has been used for entertainment for using

Van de Graaff generators since the 1900’s. By using our Van de Graaff generator the children

will make sparks jump, foil dishes fly and hair stand on end.
