Stacey O’BrienBachelor of Planning, Graduated 2012

I chose my study area because I was increasingly aware of the links between community resilience, landscape degradation, food security and consumer choices, but struggled to find tools that addressed these issues holistically. A typical week in my course involved a range of landscape-scale sciences including geological, hydrological, and ecological subjects, urban design, mapping and sustainable agriculture.

What I enjoyed most about my course was the wide scope available for directing my planning degree towards environmental protection, adaptive governance and strategic systems planning. I was reluctant to be funnelled down a strict “urban” planning track and this degree offered a rich assortment of cultural, Indigenous and eco-social subjects, which complemented the economic and

project management components perfectly for me.

A highlight of my time at JCU was being involved in the Student Mentor Program. Getting through first year was tough but after experiencing the integrity and support from the JCU student mentors and staff, it was a pleasure to give my time to help incoming students get acquainted with university life and settle in.

I believe community gardens and other community food initiatives have the potential to link education, community cohesion and environmental stewardship together, and in this

way achieve greater sustainable living outcomes. I believe it is essential we all learn how to grow food and reduce our dependence on southern supplies. I grow my own community garden right on my footpath - where I meet my neighbours, share food and engage in local discussions about many topics.

I am looking forward to taking an active role in community food security, and working towards improved regional food system security here in Queensland. This may lead to further study for me, but not before a hard-earned break!

What to expect at universityUniversity is an independent learning environment that will develop your confidence as well as your knowledge and skills.

How is university different from school?Study at university is self-directed. You are responsible for keeping up to date with your study material, weekly reading, practical tasks and submitting assignments on time. You will be immersed in your study area and encouraged to express your thoughts and opinions. If you make the most of your studies, it can be one of the most stimulating and exciting times of your life.

Although it’s an independent learning environment, this doesn’t mean you won’t have help when you need it. For example, student mentors are available to answer your questions and to give advice on what to expect in your classes. Free study skills classes in, for example, time management and essay writing will help you stay on top of your study commitments.

Returning to study?Going to university as a mature-age student can be daunting, but more and more people are discovering that with the stimulation and confidence that university study brings, you gain far more than just a degree. To help you find your feet before you begin studying, JCU offers a five-day orientation course called Uniprep.

Full time or part time – what’s involved? For full-time students taking eight subjects (or 24 credit points) a year, the combination of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions plus reading and preparation time at home, will add up to around 40 hours per week. This is the equivalent of a full-time job. Part-time options are available for most JCU courses, giving flexibility for students with work or family commitments.

How often will I have to go?Each subject has its own amount of contact hours, which are the number of hours you are required to be on campus each week. It depends on your course and your subjects. Usually you can arrange your timetable so that you can have at least one day when you have no scheduled contact hours.

Lectures and tutorials – what’s the difference?Lectures involve a lecturer presenting information to many students in a lecture theatre. In this situation there is limited interaction between the lecturer and the students. Tutorials, however, are small groups of students, led by a

tutor, in which you cover the unit material and interact with the tutor and other students. The tutors are there to help you to understand the material and to expand on it. Some courses also include regular laboratory and practical sessions, field trips or work placements. Some subjects combine lectures and tutorials into lectorials.

Flexible optionsYou can usually design your study timetable to fit around the rest of your life. At JCU the majority of subjects are delivered on campus by face-to-face teaching. A growing number of subjects are also available online (flexible delivery mode), which allows you to fit your study around other commitments. Some subjects will be available in short blocks, known as ‘intensives’ and held during vacations.

In addition, our online services for students mean you can complete many tasks from your home computer.

AssessmentAssessment methods vary between subjects. Generally a subject will have written assignments and examinations. Other assessment could include: tutorial presentations, participation in lectures and

tutorials, contribution to discussions, and the completion of practical, field or laboratory work. Familiarise yourself with the assessment needs early in your subject so you can be well prepared.

Work placementsJCU believes in offering students practical opportunities throughout their studies. That’s why many courses include field trips and work placement components. Placements can occur during study or vacation periods, and could take place throughout northern Queensland, into Asia Pacific or further afield. Many of our graduates progress to full-time careers with their work placement employers.

David ShortenStudying Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture)

Studying Aquaculture at JCU’s Townsville campus is what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve always loved fishing and being near the water and at high school I toyed with the idea of studying marine biology but back then didn’t have the marks.Fast-forward almost 20 years and I’ve left behind a finance career in Sydney and have relocated to the far north to follow my dream. I traded in my marine biology fantasy for a degree in aquaculture, which is more up my alley. Aside from the appeal of escaping Sydney’s winters and long commutes, what really made up my mind was the chance to take a step back from the rat race and do something I really love.

I love the hands-on aspect of the degree, as it encourages students to learn both inside and outside

the classroom. There have been lots of field trips to aquaculture facilities, and these real-world experiences have galvanised what I thought the industry was like. I now know that when I graduate I would like to work for the Department of Fisheries.

I’m currently working hard on my studies and spending one day a week at an aquaculture facility near Bowen. I have managed to secure on-going work experience and holiday employment there. I’m also enjoying living in the tropics as the people here are

so friendly and that makes the university experience even more enjoyable.

Ranked in the top five per cent of universities worldwide, JCU’s reputation means many people travel here from interstate and overseas and as a result students are keen to make friends. As a mature aged student, I also feel I am in a privileged position as I can draw on life experiences to help me with my studies.

Karmann LaneStudying Bachelor of Geology

My parents gave me a microscope when I was in Year 6, which triggered my interest in the sciences.

I have always been fascinated with the earth. How environmental conditions have shaped the world as we know it, how rocks and fossils formed and how different minerals interact with each other. Our lecturer is very passionate about geology and has taken our class on two field trips to local areas. I love the practical side of the course and learning to recognise the different varieties of rocks and fossils.

At the moment I am studying a subject called Evolution of the Earth. I’m also learning systems modelling and visualisation, which looks at how to interpret graphs

and put information into visual forms.

One day a week I help a Masters student from America in the field. He is studying geophysical engineering. We are using seismic refractions to see the depth of the current water table in various locations in far north Queensland, including Aloomba and Mareeba. This research will be published in his thesis, which is looking at developing a seismic fraction method for mapping permanent water tables in tropical environments. It’s really interesting and would have to be one of the course highlights so far. This

experience has opened my eyes to hydrology, which is an area I hope to study further.

Although it’s been challenging I really enjoy learning. I graduated from high school in 2005, so getting back into the study habit has been hard at times but I knew I always wanted to learn more.

After graduation I can see myself pursuing a career in soil science or hydrology. There are ample employment opportunities in mining, exploration and natural resource management. It’s a growing field.

Why study Geology?

Geologists study the composition, structure, physical properties, history and processes that shape the earth’s crust. They locate new mineral, energy and water resources crucial to business and everyday living, and then determine the most economic, sustainable ways to extract them. As a practicing geologist you will be a key player in the resource sector, which is vital to Australian and global economies.

You will learn how Earth has evolved from the interactions of deep Earth processes with those that sculpt the surface of Earth, and how Earth has been endowed with the natural resources that underpin modern life and civilization. As a professional geologist, you will be engaging with some of the most profound challenges that face society today. Increasing pressures on Earth’s resources will require geologists to provide innovative solutions to mineral and energy-supply problems, to lead to a sustainable future.

You will learn about the origin of natural resources and energy, and natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. The emphasis in this degree is on practical and professional training that will allow you to find natural resources, and understand natural and human-induced changes to planet Earth.

Course overview

You will learn to identify rocks and minerals, to make geological maps and a variety of other field skills, and understand the genesis of rocks and ore deposits. The course is practically orientated, and emphasises learning in the field, taking advantage of outstanding localities in north Queensland. You may be given advanced standing (credit) for part of your previous degree, which will fast track you through this degree. This degree is designed to give you a strong entry point to the resource sector.

Scott HansenBachelor of Science (Zoology & Marine Biology), Graduated 2010

I was originally from Canberra and moved to Townsville to study Marine Biology because JCU is one of the world leaders in the field.

When I started the course I really enjoyed the zoology components, so I decided to do a double major.

In the first and second years of the Marine Biology course, we did lots of lab work and field trips to Magnetic Island. In third year, we spent time at JCU’s Orpheus Island research facility and studied reef fish.

We are learning from some of the best scientists in the world and it’s wonderful being able to do something I love.

For Zoology we travelled to Borneo, Malaysia for two weeks, which was a real highlight. I implemented a research study on native bats and visited the Sepilok Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre.

The course is pretty full on, with over 20 hours of class time a week, plus you’re expected to do time outside those hours. But much of it is lab or group work, which is both enjoyable and interesting. The contact hours decrease in subsequent

years with the self-learning aspect becoming more important and course papers become more applicable. I also did some intensives which meant I completed some subjects more quickly.

Living on campus is excellent in first year because you meet heaps of interstate and international students and make new friends. Plus there are lots of college functions, the sporting side is great and you can walk to class.

Thane MilitzStudying Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology and Aquaculture)

JCU has a worldwide reputation as a first-class university – it also allows students to study marine biology and aquaculture as a double major, which is something that is not offered at all universities. The other thing that immediately appealed to me about JCU was the fact that it recognises and accepts acquired credit from other courses. Originally from Chicago, USA, I had completed some previous study back home, and it was a bonus for me that this credit could be used towards my current studies.

At the moment I’m doing Honours, but I hope to go on to complete my PhD. From there it is my aim to eventually travel overseas to establish sustainable ornamental fisheries in developing countries. Developing countries account for about two thirds of the total export value of fresh and marine ornamental fish and, although

a niche market, this sector is a global component of international trade, fisheries, aquaculture and development.

Marine Biology is the study of marine life and aquatic ecosystems, whereas Aquaculture concentrates more on the cultivation of aquatic organisms. Having knowledge and experience in both of these areas gives me a distinct edge on the competition when applying for prospective jobs after graduation.

In preparation for job hunting, JCU offers Science students the opportunity to work with industry professionals throughout their studies in the form of volunteer

opportunities with professional mentors or university professors. The Science School staff - from technician to professor - are always available and willing to help.

Practical experience on the reef is definitely the highlight of this course, and the main reason why JCU is the best place to study Marine Biology and Aquaculture. Not only do students get to learn about marine life in classroom tutorials and from dedicated and experienced professors, but they also get up close and personal with tropical fish, coral and marine ecosystems.

Course structure*What is Physiology & Pharmacology?Physiology is the study of how living organisms function. It is concerned with the body fluids, cells, tissues and organs and how these individual parts are integrated.

Physiology incorporates aspects of biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, and the physical sciences. Pharmacology is the study of chemical agents or drugs, and the ways in which they affect living systems. In particular, it is concerned with the development of new drug therapies, as well as the improvement of existing treatments.

The pharmaceutical industry is increasingly investigating natural products as the basis for new drug treatments. Areas in high biodiversity, such as rainforests, are particularly attractive for researchers who are searching for novel chemicals that may serve as a basis for the development of drugs. JCU is able to take advantage of its unique setting alongside the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics for such research.

Together, Physiology and Pharmacology are at the forefront of medical research, in understanding the complexities of how living organisms function and in the development of new medicines to affect living organisms.

It takes you from the laboratory to wide-ranging field studies. We investigate what animals are, where and how they adapt to their environments, how they react to environmental changes, and how they interact with plants and other animals. Where better to study Zoology than the richly biodiverse northern tropics of Queensland?

Course overviewIntroductory subjects outline what makes animals work and how they function within the environment. Subjects in later years build on this, covering invertebrate animals as well as the great range of vertebrates with whom we share the planet. More specialised options cover particular groups of animals and how they behave, or about life in particular habitats, such as rainforests. Wildlife and its conservation is a popular field, as are herpetology and conservation genetics.

Course highlightsJCU is a remarkable place to study Zoology. It is well equipped to make the most of its ready access to the superb richness of the tropical fauna and diverse environments – reef to rainforest, mangrove to mulga, and wetlands to savannah. What is Zoology & Ecology?A major in Zoology & Ecology combines the detailed study of animals with studies of how plants and animals interact with each other and with their surrounding environments.

Combined, these disciplines are responsible for much of our understanding of the biological world, from how ecosystems function, through to what determines how animals and plants respond to environmental change. Because of this, they underpin the sustainable management of our environment, and provide the knowledge and skills needed to identify and manage the impacts of humans in natural systems – from the conservation of threatened species, to the management of commercially-harvested wildlife and the control and eradication of exotic pests.

Course overviewThe course comprises a series of core subjects that provide the essential theoretical framework and technical skills needed to be a practicing professional ecologist. Students supplement this core with a range of elective subjects that expand their understanding of specific habitats, plant and animal groups, theoretical concepts, or technical skills. Electives can be chosen with a biological emphasis, but can also include subjects on physical environmental processes, conservation and management planning, and/or sustainability science.

Course highlightsUniquely located between two World Heritage-listed regions – the Wet Tropics Region with its rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef – JCU’s Cairns campus is ideally located to study the natural world. JCU prides itself on the range of field trips on offer that allow students to get hands-on experience in this region of outstanding natural beauty. We have modern laboratories and field stations in a variety of habitats and locations, where students are taught field skills to complement their theoretical knowledge. Lecturing staff are also actively undertaking their own ground-breaking research in these same locations, thus providing students with the opportunity to interact with these programs during the development of their own research skills.

Career opportunitiesOur graduates find employment locally, nationally and internation-ally in any position that examines, quantifies or assesses the impacts of humans on the biological world. This includes as environmental scientists/officers/consultants, and researchers or academics in environmental consultancy firms, local, state or federal government management agencies, universities, and government or commercial research organisations.
