We know that each group of animals has some features that are the same. For example, all birds have feathers.

We are going to look at different birds and find things that are the same and things that are different about them.

We are going to look at pictures of two different birds. Work with your partner to write down all the features you can see for each bird.

Penguins: • white, yellow and black body• long body• long beak• eyes• 2 legs• covered in short feathers• flipper-like wings• webbed feet with claws

I think all birds have feathers, 2 legs, 2 wings and can fly.

What did we find out?We found out that both the penguin and the robin have 2 legs, feathers and wings.Looking at the photographs, we can’t tell if both birds can fly so we need to look at some other sources (this means a place we can get information from).

Let’s see if we can use a book to find out.

Penguins can’t fly so the statement ‘all birds can fly’ is not true.

These things are different: • colour• sizes• one bird can fly and one can’t

Even though they both have features that are the same, these features are still different in many ways. For example, the wings are a different shape and size.
