  • Comparing Animals

We know that each group of animals has some features that are the same. For example, all birds have feathers.

Does this mean that all birds are exactly the same? Discuss this with your partner.

    • What do you think?• Do you think the same as

your partner? • Can you explain why?

  • Comparing Animals

I think all birds have feathers, 2 legs, 2 wings and can fly.

    • What do you think?• Do you think I am right?• How can we find out?

We are going to look at different birds and find things that are the same and things that are different about them.

  • Comparing Animals

We are going to look at pictures of two different birds. Work with your partner to write down all the features you can see for each bird.

  • Comparing Animals

    robin penguin

  • robin penguin

Robins: • red, white and brown body• short body• short beak• eyes• 2 legs• covered in long feathers• wings• feet with toes and claws

    Penguins: • white, yellow and black body• long body• long beak• eyes• 2 legs• covered in short feathers• flipper-like wings• webbed feet with claws

  • Comparing Animals

I think all birds have feathers, 2 legs, 2 wings and can fly.

What did we find out?We found out that both the penguin and the robin have 2 legs, feathers and wings.Looking at the photographs, we can’t tell if both birds can fly so we need to look at some other sources (this means a place we can get information from).

Let’s see if we can use a book to find out.

  • Comparing Animals

Penguins can’t fly so the statement ‘all birds can fly’ is not true.

  • Comparing Animals

    They both have: • a beak• eyes• 2 legs and feet• feathers• wings

These things are different: • colour• sizes• one bird can fly and one can’t

Even though they both have features that are the same, these features are still different in many ways. For example, the wings are a different shape and size.

  • Finding Out More

You are going to find out more about how the animals in each group are similar and how they are different.

1 What do you think will be the same in the reptile group?

What do you think will be different?

  • Finding Out More

Using the photographs and eBook, compare the animals from each group. Record your ideas using the Comparing Animals Activity Sheet.
