mission to provide scientists and researchers of engineering the opportunity to discuss and to suggest solutions for the
improvement of engineering and technology. The theme of the congress is “Engineering and Technology Education:
Turning Challenges into Opportunities” and it has brought up a diversity of interesting discussions regarding engineering
and technology importance for the development of science and technology aiming the future of human kind.
INTERTECH’2012 is a congress that has been designed to promote the exchange of information about the last
achievements of researchers and professionals in engineering and technology fields. It is an event that has been a success
along its more than ten years of existence. The ideas, opinions and professionals contributions are showed in lectures with
international specialists in their areas of performance, plenary sessions, presentations of works and workshops.
Dili in East Timor is the place where it happens, a country with an outstanding environment and whose importance

Message from the Technical Program Chair
It is a pleasure for me to be the Technical Program Chair of INTERTECH’2012 – XII International Conference
on Engineering and Technology Education. It is the 12th edition of INTERTECH and along these 22 years it has been
a success that has overcome the crisis and always providing a high quality congress for the international scientific
community.
This year INTERTECH counts with the collaboration of many researchers and professionals whose works in the
fields of interest have contributed for the discussions and the proposition of solutions that are so important for the
sustainable development of our contemporary society.
The local of the event, the city of Dili in East Timor is doubtless a paradise, a place where nature is stunning and
with kindness people; a young country with a lot of history and a promising future. Equally young the University -
Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL) is a perfect environment for the accomplishment of such scientific event.

Message from the Local Chairs
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the INTERTECH’2012 - XII International Conference on
Engineering and Technology Education, to be held in Dili, East Timor, organized by COPEC – Science and Education
Research Council and hosted by Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL).
Located in Asia and occupying an area of Size: 15,007 sq km (5,794 sq miles), the official name of the Country is
Democratic Republic of East Timor. Dili, spelled Díli in Portuguese, is the capital and the largest city of East Timor. The
total Population of East Timor is 1,040,900 inhabitants. The Currency is US Dollar and the religions are Roman Catholic
(90%), Islam and others. It is one of the youngest countries in the world and the nature is very much unspoilt and the
Portuguese influence is very much present.
Dili is the chief port and commercial centre for East Timor, and has approximately 150,000 inhabitants. It lies on
the northern coast of Timor island, the easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Island. There is also an airport in Comoro, President
Nicolau Lobato International Airport, renamed after independence leader Nicolau Lobato, which is used for commercial and
military flights.

East Timor's two official languages are Portuguese and Tetum, a local Austronesian language. The official language
Tetum, known as Tetum-Dili, grew out of the dialect favored by the colonizers at Dili, and thus has considerable foreign
influence, but there are also has a variety of non-official dialects which are widely used and known as Tetum-Terik.
Under Indonesian rule, the use of Portuguese was banned, but it was used by the clandestine resistance, especially
in communicating with the outside world. The language, along with Tetum, gained importance as a symbol of resistance and
freedom and was adopted as one of the two official languages for this reason, and as a link to nations in other parts of the
world. It is now being taught and promoted widely with the help of Brazil and Portugal. East Timor is a member of the
Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), also known as the Lusophone Commonwealth, and a member of
the Latin Union.
This is the environment that we provide to the INTERTECH’2012 and we are making our best to welcome
everyone. The event will be a landmark in the history of education in the UNTL, the public national University.
We expect you will find the experience here enjoyable and valuable as you participate in the broad range of session
and social activities that have been scheduled.
