How to relate codes and conventions to science fiction?• Codes are symbols which represent something, in science fiction films

the codes may be that its filmed in outer space or a ‘future universe’. Other codes may be spaceships and other technology we don’t actually have yet. The codes would convey that the film isn’t realistic, it’s possible to happen in the future but has not yet happened.

Science fiction audience:• The target audience for science fiction is typically boys/men. This is

because the media usually relate space and technology to men. Science fiction gives the audience a sense of wonder, it makes them question technology and their futures. It opens the audiences mind to possibilities that people may not have thought of. It causes the audience to see their own time differently.• Women tend to be more content withthe era they are in. The crave for changeIsn't quite the same. Which is why scienceFiction may all seem unrealistic.

Representation:• Science fiction represents science as something completely different

to what typically the media may suggest. When you hear science, you tend to think of labs and experiments, but science fiction makes it more than that. Science is actually very focused on space and technology.• Science fiction also changes people initial ideas on humanity. It

challenges peoples thoughts, is this world full of humans or is there more to it?

What goes into the making of science fiction films?

Technology is a main part of the making, as high quality cameras and special effects are essential for a good sci fi film. However costume , makeup, cast and setting are what set the scene. They make sci fi seem more realistic. Sci fi films generally cost millions/billions to make, they are much more expensive than a ordinary film as they are set in another era.
