The Creation of the World

The Bible’s account of creation found in Genesis shows the world being created by the word of God in 6 days.

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

The Creation of the World

Day 1

3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day.

Day 2

6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning-the second day.

Day 3

9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning-the third day.

Day 4

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning-the fourth day.

Day 5

20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning-the fifth day.

Day 6

24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Day 6 part 2

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Day 6 part 3

Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it-I give every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning-the sixth day.

What do Christians say?

Some take the bible completely literally so…

1. The world is 5000 years old

2. God made it in 6 days

3. There is no evolution

4. There was no big bang

5. There were no dinosaurs

6. The Stalagmites in Poole’s Cavern are made to look old.

Page 17: Science Overview

What do Christians say?

Some say the Bible has some truth but was written a long time ago so…

1. There may have been millions of years between each day.

2. God did make the world.

3. There is no evolution or big bang

Page 18: Science Overview

What do Christians say?

Some say the Bible has to be accepted in line with science so…

1. God started the Big Bang

2. God works through Evolution.

Page 19: Science Overview

Stewardship

Christians believe that God made them stewards of the Earth so…

1. They should look after it

2. They should preserve it for others

3. They should put human beings first

How do Christians respond to environmental issues? [7 marks]

They pick up rubbish.

They might campaign to save the whales.

They might campaign against pollution because they believe it ruins God’s world.

They might campaign against pollution because they believe it ruins God’s world, if God made it they shouldn’t destroy it they say that we are stewards of the world so we should look after and protect the environment..

Other Christians believe that the most loving thing to do is always right so they would campaign for environmental issues which affect people. They may be in favour of GM crops because they help us to feed the hungry and that is what Jesus taught..

Page 29: Science Overview

How do Christians respond to environmental issues? [7 marks]

Not all Christians think the same about the environment. Some Christians believe that they have dominion over the worlds so they can do what they want. Other Christians say that because God made the world we shouldn’t damage it. Others say that we are stewards of the earth so we should look after it. Jesus said that the love of money is the root of all evil, some Christians recognise that profit making of multinational corporations causes most of the environmental damage in the world. Christian might use environmentally friendly products or campaign for environmental groups.

“Human beings are more important than animals” Do you agree? Give reasons to support your answer and show that you have thought about different points of view. You must refer to Christianity in your answer.

[5 marks]

I agree.…because animals are lower forms of life who

are not reflective and don’t have intelligence.Other people might disagree because they

believe that animals can feel pain and are sentient so they should be treated with respect.

Christians think that although animals are God’s creation and should be treated with respect they haven’t got souls and so are not as special in God’s eyes.

a) try to include 3 Christian views…

•Not all Christians think the same thing about the origins of the world•Some 6 days, universe 5000 – 10000 years old•Because….Bible•Others 6 days = 6 lots of millions of years•Because the universe is obviously older than 5000 years•Others Genesis story is myth so just tells us about God•Because it was\written for the people at the time and not a scientific text book

b) try to include 3 Christian views…

•Some Christians work for the environment because…

•Stewardship so…

•God made it so…

•“love your neighbour” so…
