Earlier in the year, I had the privilege to test a very well put together TenPoint Stealth SS

ACUdraw 50. Many Internet forums have been raving about the Stealth SS. However, there is just as much talk about TenPoint’s � agship crossbow, the Vapor, as well there should be. A � ag-ship crossbow from TenPoint means that it’s among the best of the best. Some consumers want the very best money can buy and this Ohio-based company has a reputation for pro-ducing top end products. A premium crossbow should last for many years of use and meet the highest requirements of the very best archers. � e Vapor is designed to � t into this elite category.

Our national economy has strug-gled in recent years and layo� s and plant closings have hit some communi-ties quite hard. For its part, TenPoint has been able to maintain a fairly steady workforce and has invested smartly in new technologies for production. In addition, the Ohio based � rm has put a lot of e� ort into research and development. � e development of new technologies by TenPoint to lighten crossbows, reduce vibration and make the bows more compact hasn’t totally changed the designs. � e products of today, like the Stealth SS and Vapor, still resemble some of the great TenPoint models that went through my testing several years back. You may ask, is that a good thing? Well, it is! I expect a com-pany that is great to stick to its founda-tions, change when and where neces-sary and do what it needs to stay ahead of the competition.

What drives innovation is the needs of the customers and the pressure of

competition. TenPoint has stayed on its game as it has faced both long-term competitors and those like Maximus that have come and gone in fairly short order. Each year, in January, we see innovations from crossbow companies at the ATA Show. At this year’s show in Louisville, Kentucky, TenPoint received high praise from retailers for its latest � agship o� ering. � e Vapor, of course, looked the part of a top product and the media certainly were interested. � e testing done in this article reveals much more about this product, which received grades that any consumer shopping in that price range should � nd very impressive.

Testing Background� e Vapor went through a standard

and regimented performance test. � e focus of this type of test is to determine the performance characteristics. � e goal is to provide appropriate objective information, as well as some subjective

commentary, for aiding dealers in deciding what to stock and consumers in deciding what to purchase. With that said, this evaluation is by no means conclusive. Each archer should assess what is important to him or her and interpret the results within the con-text of this article. As always, I recom-mend that anyone who is considering a crossbow should shoot as many dif-ferent makes and models as possible to determine what best suits his or her individual needs and desires.

IntroductionTenPoint has been making selec-

tive changes to its crossbows over the years but so many innovations are incorporated into the Vapor you might say it breaks the mold. � e Vapor fea-tures both Parallel Limb Technology (PLT) and Hybrid Eccentric Cams (HE), which set it apart from TenPoint’s cur-rent o� erings. Up to this time, I had yet to see a company truly push the limits of parallel limb technology in the crossbow market. Companies pro-ducing compound bows have mas-tered this attribute and I am excited to see TenPoint incorporate it. � e other characteristic that is touted as a major departure is the HE cam. � is cam is more aggressive and is set to unleash a tremendous amount of energy.

of which were mentioned in my prior ArrowTrade article featuring the Stealth SS. � ese features are the Functionally Superior Bullpup (FSB) stock, stra-tegically placed rubber inserts, dual purpose rubber safety wings (also known as grip guard wings) and the PowerTouch Trigger. � ese four fea-tures sound fairly straightforward, yet, when combined, truly make this prod-uct appealing on the dealer’s rack and in the � eld. � e Vapor includes addi-tional innovations such as the patent pending String Dampening System, a 22.5 inch version of the carbon � ber barrel and the exclusive BowJax cross-bow noise dampening kit.

� e Vapor is sold as a complete package. It is either o� ered with the ACUdraw or ACUdraw 50. For this test, I was provided with the ACUdraw 50 version; the di� erence in either draw-ing device would not impact the per-formance results. � e ACUdraw 50 is a superb feature for those that don’t like toting around a cocking aid separately, as the rope style cocking aid is incorpo-rated into the stock. Other items of this package include a three arrow quiver, deluxe soft crossbow case, six-pack of TenPoint Pro V22 carbon � ber arrows and points, RangeMaster Pro scope (including rings), window sticker and instructional DVD.

� e crossbow dimensions and weights as measured out of the box appear in the chart below.

� e crossbow went through a thor-ough inspection. � e review focused on the string/cables, eccentrics, limb and limb pockets, rail, stock, butt plate, trig-ger housing, trigger and trigger guard. After a thorough review of the Vapor, I could not � nd a single blemish. � e product was � awless. I would rate the product as exceptional in the work-manship section.

Thereafter, I put the product through a 100-150 shot cycling to verify functionality. Some minor testing was performed but the focus was to detect any issues or concerns with the product before starting the actual performance testing. � e Vapor performed well in this segment. No major di� erences were noted from the start to the � nish. One thing to mention: please review the safety and maintenance portions of the manual to ensure proper use at the onset of shooting. � is went a long way to smooth the initial setup and testing.

� e crossbow is next evaluated on the � ve criteria outlined below:

Dynamic E� ciency: � e dynamic e� ciency portion of the test utilized a

Revere Load-Cell controlled by a winch device; the load-cell connected to the crossbow with a cocking aid. � e cross-bow was mounted in a shooting plat-form that controlled any movement that might be experienced as Force-Draw curves were taken. � e stored energy obtained from the Force-Draw curve was used in conjunction with speed measurements to calculate dynamic e� ciency.

Speed per inch of Power Stroke:Speed measurements were

taken with three projectiles. A Pact Chronograph XP and a Competition Electronics Pro-Chrono IR were set in tandem to record results. � e average speed measurement was divided by the power stroke to determine the speed per inch of power stroke.

Noise Output: Sound measure-ments were recorded with three projec-tiles. � e measurements were averaged and the sound meter was set to take measurements with the A-weighted � l-ter (which mimics the human ear).

Trigger Force: � e Trigger Force measurements were recorded in pounds and averaged. An Imada Digital Force Gauge was used to determine the peak Trigger Force.

Precision Measurements:� ese measurements provide an

indication of how closely groups were shot together when shooting by hand from a bench rest or other supportive device. Extreme spread is the method

� e Initial Review:� e Vapor was received at my test

facility and it was obvious TenPoint knows how to contain the crossbow within the packaging. � e box that houses the crossbow within the prima-ry packaging ensures that the product will move only minimally while being shipped from the warehouse. So kudos to TenPoint for getting the packaging right.

Upon opening the package, I was met with an already assembled stock and mounted scope. Please note that the scope may require � ne-tuning for more accurate results. Minor assem-bly of the riser and foot stirrup is required. � e riser has very tight toler-ances and requires connection/sepa-ration through TenPoint’s Vibra-Cush component. � e mating connection is close-� tting and took several minutes to properly align. � e foot stirrup con-nects to the riser and is easily installed. After some additional tightening of bolts located on the riser and locking set screws, I was ready for my initial round

of testing. Overall, the setup was quick and easy, taking less than 15 minutes.

After assembly, I checked through the manual. � e manual encompasses safe-guards, assembly and operation. I also focused on the general instructions

that are placed around the string and cables. � is easy to read noti� cation hits the high points for archers prior to operation. In summary, make sure to avoid improper � nger and/or hand placement, do not dry-� re the product and use the proper amount, type and frequency of rail lubrication. Be sure to note that this product has two safeties, one near the trigger housing and the other near the forearm (GripSafety). � e GripSafety needs to be depressed for the crossbow to � re and helps ensure the support hand is positioned correctly and well away from the string travel.

� e next item of consideration is the warranty of the Vapor. Rick Bednar, CEO and Chairman of TenPoint, stated that Tenpoint “o� ers a lifetime limited warranty that we stand by. For returns, we attempt to receive, repair and return products to our customers within 72 hours.” From my perspective, warran-ties are an essential part of the buying decision. Be sure to pay attention to the limited operational warranty terms and conditions. I recommend that any one

One thing to mention, please review the safety and maintenance portions of the manual to ensure proper use at the onset of shooting, this went a long way during the initial setup and testing.

Detailed Test Results

Dynamic Efficiency:

The dynamic efficiency portion of the test utilizes a Revere Load-Cell controlled by a winch device; the load-cell connects to the crossbow with a cocking aid. The crossbow is mounted in a shooting platform that controls any movement that might be experienced as Force-Draw curves are taken. The stored energy obtained from the Force-Draw curve, is used in conjunction with speed measurements to calculate dynamic efficiency.

Precision TestProvides an indication of how close groups are shot together by shooting from a bench rest or other supportive device.

Speed per inch of Power -StrokeProvides an indication of the amount of speed output by the crossbow over the distance from the full-draw position to the static brace height position. An assessment is made with multiple projectile weights.

who considers buying this crossbow reads through these terms in detail. � e terms are also posted on TenPoint’s website. Please note that there are strict rules that must be followed in order to activate the warranty and make a claim, so be conscious of that.

In � e FieldI received this product in enough

time to bring it a� eld while scouting for preseason turkey. � e Vapor � ts and feels like a top of the line product should. Its light carbon barrel helps account for the advertised bare cross-bow weight of 6.8 pounds. Fully out� t-ted with cocking aid, scope and silenc-ers, the weight does increase but it’s nothing I struggled with while climb-ing the hills of one of my hot spots. � e thumbhole stock and easy to use ACUdraw 50 are the features that really stood out as bene� ts during my shoot-ing sequence. Additionally, the com-pact limb design allowed me to feel less inhibited while traveling to and from locations.

When you � re the crossbow, the sequence is fairly standard: you draw, the safety automatically engages, you place the arrow into the housing, aim through the scope, you push forward the safety, you depress the GripSafety and you � re. � e outstanding results I had in the � eld are replicated in the precision shooting section of this arti-cle. � is product has the potential to shoot 1 inch or less groups at a dis-tance of 40 yards. Shooting less than 1 inch groups is an excellent feat for an average archer. � is is only achievable because of features like the retention spring, the Omni Nock on the Pro V22s, an ultra smooth rail, the PowerTouch trigger, the FSB stock and the careful cam timing.

One unique thing and something I felt worth mentioning is TenPoint’s focus on dampening vibration and reducing noise. Crossbows can be signi� cantly louder than compound bows. Several years back, many cross-bows were hitting around the mid-90 decibels on their best days with the heaviest of arrows. In the � eld, noise can be a major annoyance and no one wants a crossbow that jumps right out of his or her hands upon � ring. � e Vapor displayed none of that and the

performance results speak for them-selves. � e vibration is minimal during the shot and the design of this crossbow is meant to somewhat isolate resonant vibrations from the archer.

Hot FeaturesMany times, for a product to stand

out it has to be di� erent. Di� erent can be good or bad. CEO Rick Bednar doesn’t believe the di� erences you’ll notice in this product will put any-one o� from wanting to � re or buy the Vapor. I asked Bednar what sets the Vapor apart from the competition. He replied, it’s “the carbon barrel, riser design, parallel limb technology, GripSafety, SDS and cocking mecha-nisms. All of which make the Vapor a one of a kind, very cool crossbow.” I have to agree; this product is one of a kind. � ese features are very appeal-ing and create a shooting experience I have yet to experience with any other crossbow. (My last remark is somewhat suprising to me, as I really believed the Stealth SS I tested earlier in the year was already a game changer for this company.)

SuggestionsIf you take a look at the ArrowTrade

Scorecard, you will notice that most of the evaluation criteria are rated as exceptional. Considering this prod-uct is among the most expensive in the industry and is claimed to be the most “Technologically Advanced Crossbow” produced by TenPoint, maybe those scores don’t surprise you. Well, they sort of sur-prised me because no crossbow I’ve tested for ArrowTrade to this point has ever achieved such a good “report card.”

With most prod-ucts, I am able to � nd areas I think can be worked on. I had to dig deep into my prior test results for com-paratives and also step back and try to look at areas I felt may have some opportunity for

improvement. One area I felt could be improved upon is the e� ciency per-centages. � e performance results aren’t bad but I’d like to see TenPoint achieve results around 80 percent. � e next area of improvement revolves around the weight of the crossbow; remember the advertised weight of 6.8 pounds is without the cocking aid and silencers. For some, a crossbow that sports a weight over 8.5 pounds with scope may be somewhat cumbersome, considering it is just one of the many items that are carried to and from the treestand.

� e � nal area that I felt could use some additional improvements is the location of the GripSafety. � is feature is a trendsetter and de� nitely a compo-nent I enjoyed. Yet it seemed somewhat forward of the sweet spot based on my shooting style.

that the Vapor far exceeded my expec-tations. When paying a great deal for a product, I expect it to meet my stan-dards of quality plus perform � awless-ly. � e Vapor did just that. I believe this product is built to the highest standards and it exudes quality. � e subjective scores reiterate my thoughts on the design and craftsmanship of the Vapor.

� e performance results are the primary talking points outside of the unique technologies. � is product is quieter, faster and more e� cient than its cousin, the Stealth SS. In compari-son to other premium products in the industry, it hits all the same points yet has many more distinctive features. TenPoint has really nailed it with the Vapor. Now, looking to the future, I am wondering how TenPoint will top

this one-of-a-kind model. I tried to get some insight into the future and Bednar was pretty tight lipped. He did promise he has some surprises up his sleeve. While I am eager to see what’s next

from this strong manufacturer, I am still exceptionally pleased with what is available today.

In The Field:

As springtime is leaning on the future of summer it leads us to our next season of hunting- Turkeys! Fortunately for me I received this product in enough time to bring it afield while preseason scouting begins. The Vapor fits and feels like a top of the line product should. It’s important to mention that this product is designed with some light components (i.e carbon barrel), and the advertised bare crossbow weight is 6.8 lbs. Fully outfitted, the weight does increase, but it’s nothing I struggled with while climbing the hills of one of my hotspots. The thumbhole stock and easy to use ACUdraw 50 are the features that kickoff my shooting sequence. Additionally, the compact limb design allowed me to feel less inhibited while traveling to and from locations.

The Off-Shoot:

If you take a look at the ArrowTrade Scorecard you notice that most of the evaluation criteria are rated exceptional. Considering this product is amongst the best in the industry and is quoted as being the most “Technologically Advanced Crossbow” produced by the TenPoint those scores shouldn’t surprise you. Well they sort of surprised me because a product that has gone through this test has yet to achieve those scores. But with most things I am able to find areas I think can be worked on. I had to dig deep into my prior test results for comparatives, and also step back and try to look at areas I felt may have some opportunity for improvement. One area I felt could be improved upon is the efficiency percentages. The performance results aren’t bad, but I’d like to see TenPoint achieve results around 80%. Next area of improvement revolves around the weight of the crossbow. Remember I did mention that I didn’t struggle carrying this product in the field. But for some, a crossbow that sports a weight healthier than 8.5 lbs may be somewhat cumbersome considering it is just one of the many items that are carried to and from the treestand.
