One hundred years ago thisDecember, nine prominentscientists working under theumbrella of the SmithsonianInstitution took advantage of

the fact that naturalenvironments in the Canal Areawere being impacted by theconstruction of the PanamaCanal, to study its flora andfauna.

The idea originally proposedyears earlier under SI secretaryLangley actually came to happenwhen SI secretary Charles D.Walcott wrote to the UnitedStates president William Taft, who approved immediately theSmithsonian Institution's plan inOctober 1910. The biologicalsurvey of the Canal area wasvery successful scientifically andduring their time in Panama, theresearchers, either bythemselves or in small teams, covered other regions of theIsthmus with theencouragement of thePanamanian authorities.

Third African FDP underwayStory: Center for Tropical

Forest Science (CTFS)

Edited by M Alvarado

and ML Calderon

A new 25-ha forest

dynamics plot (FDP) was

established in a mature

forest in the Rabi

Protected Area in the

Gamba Complex of

protected areas in

southwestern Gabon.

The plot follows CTFS

protocols and adds a

third site to the existing

African plots at Ituri

(Congo) and Korup

(Cameroon).

Studies by the

Smithsonian

over the last

decade have

shown the

Gamba Complex

area, which

includes the Rabi plot, to

be extremely biodiverse.

The plot represents the

Guineo-Congolian

rainforest that abounds

in the Rabi landscape. It

is being funded by Shell,

the Smithsonian

Institution Global Earth

Observatories (SIGEO)

initiative, and other

sources.

The project is part of the

Gabon Biodiversity

Program and represents

collaboration between SI

National Zoological

Park’s Center for

Conservation Education

and Sustainability and

Conservation Biology

Institute, Shell Gabon,

the Government of

Gabon, the CTFS, SIGEO

and other stakeholders.

The plot will provide

baseline data for studies

of forest regeneration,

carbon dynamics and

biodiversity. In addition,

the plot affords the

opportunity to help build

scientific and

resource-management

capacity in the region.

Late in 2009, researchers

finished surveying

25-ha

of the plot.

Tree tagging, mapping,

and identification will

begin this year.

Una nueva parcela de

dinámica de bosques se

estableció en un bosque

maduro en el Área

Protegida de Rabi en el

complejo de Gamba de

áreas protegidas del

suroeste de Gabon.

La parcela sigue todos

los protocolos del CTFS

y agrega un tercer sitio a

las parcelas africanas

de Ituri (Congo) y Korup

(Cameroon).

Estudios del

Smithsonian en la última

década han demostrado

que el área del

Complejo

de Gamba

que incluye la

parcela de Rabi,

es, en extremo,

biodiversa.

La parcela

representa el bosque

tropical Guineo-

Congolense que abunda

en el paisaje de Rabi. La

financian Shell, la

iniciativa de los

Observatorios Globales

de la Tierra (SIGEO) y

otras fuentes.

El proyecto es parte del

Programa de

Biodiersidad de Gabon y

representa una

colaboración entre el

Instituto de Biología de

la Conservación y el

Centro para Educación

en Conservación y

Sostenibilidad del

Parque Zoológico

Nacional del

Smithsonian, Shell

Gabon, el gobierno de

Gabon, el CTFS, SIGEO

y otros accionistas.

La parcela proporciona

datos básicos para

estudios de la

regeneración de

Ê

Gamba

bosques,

dinámica

de carbono y

biodiversidad.

Además, la parcela

tendrá la oportunidad

de ayudar a

materializar la

capacidad de

admninistrar la ciencia

y los recursos en la

región.

A finales de 2009, los

investigadores

completaron la

exploración de 25

hectáreas de la

parcela.

Este año

se empezará a

marcar, hacer

mapas e identificar

los árboles.
