Vocabulary

Scientific Notation:

Method of writing numbers that are very large OR Small.

Has two parts: 1. Decimal

x2. Power of 10 1.8 x 10-3

Page 26: Scientific notation

I. The first part

There MUST be ONLY ONE digit to the left of the decimal. Between $1.00 but less than $10.00

Examples: 3.45, 1.320 Non-Examples: 11.56, .0565

We must move the decimal in order to meet this rule.

Page 27: Scientific notation

Write the width of the universe in scientific notation

210,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles

Where is the decimal point now?

Where would you put the decimal to make this number be between 1 and 10?

Page 28: Scientific notation

Write the width of human hair in scientific notation

.0018 cm Where is the decimal point now?

Where would you put the decimal to make this number be between 1 and 10?

Page 29: Scientific notation

If you do not see a decimal point in a number, it is understood to be at the end of the number.

Helpful Hint #1

Positive Exponent

•What you notice about the exponent and the number of zeroes?

Negative Exponent

•What do you notice about the exponent and the number of zeroes?

II. Powers of 10

Page 31: Scientific notation

Conclusion?

Positive Exponent

Move decimal point to the RIGHT

Exponent corresponds with the amount of zeroes after 1

Negative Exponent

Move the decimal point to the LEFT

Exponent minus 1 corresponds with the amount of zeroes before 1

Page 32: Scientific notation

Find the value of each power of 10.

a. 10–2 c. 1010 b. 105

10,000,000,000100,0000.01

Start with 1.0 and move the decimal point two places to the left.

Start with 1.0 and move the decimal point five places to the right.

Start with 1.0 and move the decimal point ten places to the right.

YOU TRY!

Page 33: Scientific notation

Write each number as a power of 10

A. 1,000,000

The decimal point is six places to the right of 1, so the exponent is 6.

B. 0.0001 C. 1,000

The decimal point is four places to the left of 1, so the exponent is –4.

The decimal point is three places to the right of 1, so the exponent is 3.

III. Puttingit all together!Scientific to Standard

Steps 1. Look at

EXPONENT Positive=Right Negative=Left 2. Move decimal

that direction3. Empty spaces fill

in with a zero!

Just Watch!Write in Standard form

3

102.34 x

1. Positive exponent= move DECIMAL to right

2. 2340.0

Page 35: Scientific notation

Standard form refers to the usual way that numbers are written—not in scientific notation.
