Scientific Notation

• Form c x 10^n where c ≥ 1, c < 10, and n is an integer.

Example:Standard form Product form Scientific Notation 56, 780, 000 = 5.678 x 10, 000, 000 = 5.678 x 10^7

From Standard Form to Scientific Notation

Step 1:Identify how many places (n) do you have to move the decimal point to leave only one digit to the left side of the decimal point.

Step 2:Move the decimal point. If the decimal point is moved to the right, write n as a negative number. If the decimal point is moved to the left, write n as a positive number.

Step 3:Multiply times 10 to the n power.
