1st International meetingof diabetes and bone
Background and AimDiabetes is one of the fasting growing diseases in the western world andis becoming a huge problem in emerging economic power houses suchas India and Asia and particularly China. The number of patients isstaggering and the rate of newly diagnosed diabetics continues to grow. This is especially as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMT2) is associated withobesity which in itself is becoming a global health problem.Osteoporosis is another disease increasing due to aging populations andan accompanying increase in fractures. There are approximately 1.5million fractures per year in the USA .The population suffering low bonedensity is about 44 million, of which about 14 million are osteoporotic. Thecost of the disease has been estimated to be in the region of $22 billionannually. The mortality after a hip fracture is around 50 % in the first year.Rising morbidity is accompanied by loss of independence. Despite effectivedrugs reducing the fracture burden by about 50-60% the disease is stillnot recognized, diagnosed, or treated.
Learning objectivesBy attending this live educational meeting the learners will be able to:• Assess fracture risk in diabetic patients•Utilise the latest pathophysiology of bone fragility in diabetes•Utilise the latest diagnostic tools and treatment options for diabetesrelated fractures
Target audienceEndocrinologists, Diabetologists, Rheumatologists, Internal medicine andprimary care physicians.
