    Applied Scholastics International is

    a secular nonprofit public benefit

    corporation that addresses head-on the

problem of illiteracy by making broadly

    available L. Ron Hubbards discoveries

in the field of education and literacy.

    Mr. Hubbard recognized the deep

effects on society of lowered education

    standards and literacy levels, observing

that the illiterate or functionally illiterate,

    denied work and opportunity, often

fall prey to criminality, vice or drugs.

Thus, he embarked on an examination

of the subject of study and isolated

the precise causes for the success or

failure of any activity or study.

So fundamental were his discoveries to

the field of education, he released them

    for broad use.

    Applied Scholastics has been

dedicated for more than four decades

to making these solutions to learningand literacy available internationally.

    Applied Scholastics is a fully

    independent, nondenominational

    organization supported by the Church

    of Scientology and by Scientologists

    dedicated to raising educational

    standards throughout the world.

    Applied Scholastics recognizes that

the world will one day rest in the hands

of todays children, and that how well

they are equipped to carry this society

forward depends on how well they are

    educated.

    Ensuring quality education for todays

students to ensure a brighter future for

all is the mission of Applied Scholastics.

    The United States Department of

Education reports that every year, one

    than 1.2 milliondrop out. Other

    industrialized nations suffer the same

    plaguedropout rates average nearly

    15 percent in Europe.

Some 30 million American adultsscore at Below Basic in rudimentary

language skills, and 60 million more

can perform only the simplest everyday

    tasks involving words and numbers.

Studies show that illiteracy is a key

factor in crime. An estimated 60 percent

of adult prisoners are functionally or

    marginally illiterate and 85 percent

of juvenile offenders are deficient in

    reading, writing and basic math.

The cost of this crisis to government,

businesses and taxpayers runs in the

trillions of dollars. The cost in human

    terms is incalculable.

In much of the world, the crisis is even

deeper, with broad access to education

nonexistent. Some 80 percent of the

113 million children who do not attend

school are barred from doing so by

poverty and internal wars. Insub-Saharan Africa, Southern and

Western Asia, the Arab States and

    North Africa, school nonattendance

ranges from 24 to 40 percent of

    school-age children.

Is it possible to rescue failing or

    inaccessible education systems and

bring hope to the 1 billion illiterate

people worldwide? Is it possible to

enable individuals to achieve literacyand competence and thus contribute to

the life and culture of our society?

The answer is yes, and it lies in the

    breakthrough discoveries of

    L. Ron Hubbard and making them

globally available through the efforts of

    Applied Scholastics International.

Education in the fullest sense of the

word is the goal of Applied Scholastics.

The aim is not only to help students

    resolve study difficulties and overcome

barriers, but to enable them to become

    self-sufficient, independent learners

who can be responsible for their own

    lifelong learning and education.

Mr. Hubbard described the scope of

    meeting the educational challenge:

The end and goal of any

    society as it addresses the

    problem of education is to

    raise the ability, the initiative

and the cultural level, and with

all of these the survival level of

    that society.

    In the 1960s, Mr. Hubbard

    released a series of lectures

on his research into the broadsubject of how to study and

    learn. So universal was the

    application of his discoveries,

the information was soon in use

    in Scientology organizations.

It was implemented by teachers in

    secular classrooms as well, with

    measurable improvement reported

in students learning ability. In 1971,

a classroom teacher formed the first

    educational organization specializing in

    the use of Study Technology.

    Applied Scholastics was founded

in Los Angeles the following year,

    dedicated to working with governments

and schools worldwide in the broad

    implementation of this technology.

For more than three decades, the

introduction of Study Technology intoschools and universities was largely a

    grass-roots effort initiated by educators

    united under the Applied Scholastics

    banner. Today, Applied Scholastics

is a worldwide network of schools,

    programs and tutoring groups.

In 2003, to meet the international

    demand for Study Technology, Applied

    Scholastics opened a residential

campus at Spanish Lake near St. Louis,

Missouri. This 100-acre training center, just two miles from the confluence of

    the Mississippi and Missouri rivers,

    is the international headquarters of

    Applied Scholastics and the first

    college of Study Technology.

    What isStudy Technology?In his

research of the subject, Mr. Hubbard

discovered that the main impedimentto a students ability to retain and

effectively use data was the absence

of a technology ofhowto study. This

included his discovery of what are

known as the three barriers to study.

Study Technology, or Study Tech as it is

    commonly called, includes the precise

    methods to overcome these barriers.

    The primary barriers are:

Lack of Mass (Physical Object)of What is Being Studied

If one is attempting to understand

the function and operation of a car

or a computer or a solar system, the

printed page and spoken word are no

substitute for the object itself. Lackingthe object associated with a word can

inhibit all understanding. If the mass of

a subject is absent, the student will feel

squashed, bent, sort of spinny, sort of

    dead, or bored.

    Too Steep a Study Gradient

When the student has not mastered

prior skills before proceeding to more

    complicated or detailed steps, the

student may feel a sort of confusionor

    afeeling of reeling(moving or swaying

as if they might fall). This barrier to study

is often referred to as missed basic

    skills or insufficient basic skills.

  • 7/29/2019 Scientology, How We Help: Applied Scholastics

    11/40

    11

    A Word Not Understood

    or Wrongly Understood

The third and most important barrier

    is the misunderstood word. A

misunderstood word is a word which

is not understoodor a word which

    is wronglyunderstood. All becomes

distinctly blank beyond a word not

    understood or wrongly understood. It

can result in the student feeling blank

or washed out, not there, and a sort

of a nervous upset feeling can follow

    after that.

    Teachers and administrators from public

    and private schools, tutors, corporate

    business trainers and educational

    consultants from around the world

come to Applied Scholastics at Spanish

Lake for training in Study Technology.

Residential and daytime professionaltraining are available, with many

    courses offered for postgraduate and

    continuing education credits.

Spanish Lake also offers a full schedule

of courses and workshops on specific

aspects of Study Technology as well

as studies in techniques that enable

    students to become more accountable,

    self-directed and self-advocating.

    Applied Scholastics has trained over

    135,000 educators from 42 nations

who, in turn, have brought Study

Technology to mill ions of colleagues

    and students.

and a network of six other schools

in major urban centers around the

    United States. Licensed to use

    Applied Scholastics educational

    services and materials, all Delphi

schools operate on a standardizedcurriculum, common teaching and

    administrative methods, and a

    comprehensive curriculum training

program. Since the inception of the

Delphi curriculum in 1975, it has

    emphasized application in the world

beyond the classroom, with the aim

being to help students of any age

    take on life.

    The first Applied Scholastics

in 1981. A day and boarding school

located on 11 acres of woodland in

    the Ashdown Forest, Greenfields

    teaches students from preschool

    to university entrance levels. After

    a thorough grounding in Study

    Technology, they receive a traditional

    English education. In addition to

    Greenfields, more than 60 tutoring

    centers have been established

    throughout the country, with others

    opened in Scotland.

    Denmarks first Applied Scholastics

    school was established in 1985.

    Today, government-funded schools

and a network of private tutoring

    centers operate across the nation,

    providing students with effective

    tools for lifelong learning

    using Study Technology.

    In Italy, a group of

    teachers formed the

first Applied Scholasticsschool center in 1978.

    This has grown to 30

    groups throughout

    the country, including

    schools, Study

    Technology centers and

    tutoring groups. In 2005,

    the Ministry of Education

approved a pilot course on Study

    Technology for delivery to Italian

teachers as part of their continuing

    education.

    Befitting 21st-century learning, the

The Applied Scholastics AchievementProgram (ASAP) is a comprehensive

    academic acceleration program that

    turns underperformers into achievers.

It uses the tools of Study Technology in

an integrated approach that identifies a

students skill level and advances him or

    her from that point.

    The Hollywood Education and Literacy

    Project (H.E.L.P.) started in 1997 with a

    single center in Hollywood, California,

and has grown to a worldwide network.Tutors are trained extensively in the

use of Study Technology, and the

H.E.L.P. lineup of study is precisely

laid out to take students of any

age and level of English proficiency

    to higher levels of learning.

In recognition of its successfulmentoring and tutoring programs,

    H.E.L.P.s Hollywood center has

    received funding from the

    State of Californias Youth

    Mentoring Initiative, which

    has enabled it to provide

    services to community youth

    and adults at no charge.

    Volunteers serve a wide range

of needs in the mentoring and

tutoring centers. Students areassisted with their homework,

    illiterate adults are taught to

    read and school dropouts

    may earn a diploma.

    Applied Scholastics tutors have also

    actively and successfully taught English

as a second language to thousands

of learners throughout the world for

the past 15 years. In towns and cities

across the United States, Europe and

Asia, Applied Scholastics ESL programshave been implemented in community

    centers, churches, workplaces,

    Recognizing the relationship between

illiteracy, drugs and crime, the minister

    challenged local leaders, parents, youth

    and educators to change conditions

    in their neighborhoods. He forged

    alliances between volunteers trained in

    Study Technology and organizations

addressing the issues of drugs and

crime, making major inroads into gangs

    through literacy training.

    Today, World Literacy Crusade operates

    programs in schools, community

    tutoring centers and juvenile detention

    facilities. It has grown

    into an international

    movement, with

    volunteers from

    lands as far-flung as

    Australia, Greece

    and Africa providing

    individuals with

    the basic tools to

    become literate,

    responsible,

    self-sufficient and

    employable.

    After completing the literacy program,

87 percent of teens involved in gangs

and drug use made the decision

    to relinquish their former lifestyle

and embark on a productive and

    ethical path.

    Parents tell the story:

My son has been doing better in

    school. His reading has improved

and so has his self-esteem. I am

    grateful for the program because

he sees other students working and

trying to improve too. He enjoys

going to the program, and comeshome and shares with his father and

me all the things he does and plans

    to do. Thank you.

    World Literacy Crusade Program

has built up my sons self-esteem,

taught him to set goals and how

to accomplish those goals. I have

a better relationship with him at

    home. Communication between

us has opened up. He has become

    responsible for his actions and

One such project started in Haiti when

    an Applied Scholastics educator from

    the Clearwater Academy in Florida

volunteered in Haiti after the 2010

earthquake. She gave a lecture on

Study Technology to over 400 parentsand students, and as a result the

director of an orphanage and school

in Haiti came to Clearwater for training

    in Study Technology. Clearwater

Academy raised the funds to transformthe school from a tarp, straw and

sticks area to a brick building with

a solid roof, and a new school was

born, with all students learning Study

    Technology.

    In another outreach undertaking,

    Applied Scholastics educators from

    the United Kingdom delivered Study

Technology seminars in the Ukraine in

2008. To meet the demand generated,

tutoring centers were started and today

    permanent centers give some 300

    Study Technology lectures each year

to students and teachers in schools

across the country. The lectures have

been adopted as part of the curriculum

for the state schools in the Babushkin

    District, and Applied Scholastics

    partners on educational projects

with the Ministry of Family and Youth

Affairs in one of the largest cities in the

Ukraine. In yet another part of the world,

    Applied Scholastics educators

    have brought Study Technology to

    Bangladesh, where half the population

cannot read or write. The educators

formed a Bangladesh Study Group and

    soon implemented Study Technology

in three schools. After they conducted

seminars of more than 100 students

    and faculty members at Jahangirnagar

University in Dhaka, the mayor of

    Dhaka proclaimed Study Technology

as the solution to the nations illiteracy

    problem and formally requested its

    implementation in every school.

    now trained more than 20,000

teachers who have in turn brought

    Study Technology to millions of

    Study Technology has also been

    throughout South Africa, Nigeria,

    Kenya, Mali, Ethiopia and Botswana.

    In the Philippines, secondary

school dropout rates ran as high

    as 30 percent, with a 75 percent

    illiteracy rate in elementary schools.

    In response, Applied Scholastics

International in Spanish Lake gavea crash course in Study Technology

to 5,000 Filipino teachers, who then

introduced the technology in three of

    the countrys schools.

    The results were unprecedented. The

first school went from last place to

    number eight nationwide; the second

established a national record for rising

student test scores; and the third

advanced from remedial status to one

    of the countrys top-rated schools.

    In Kenya, an Applied Scholastics

    rescue team delivered the Learning

How to Learn course to 14 instructors in

a school for orphans in the city of Kisii.

    Almost immediately, student test scores

boosted the school from the lowest

rankings to among the highest of all

270 schools in the region. As a result,

    Kenya education officials requested

    a national Study Tech curriculum.

    its principal a well-known science

    textbook author and educator

    dedicated to improving the quality

    of education in his country.

Searching for the answer to the

    seeming inability of his students

to study and learn, the educator

    discovered Applied Scholastics

    International and

    L. Ron Hubbards

    Study Technology.

    He immediately

    underwent training on

    the fundamentals of

    Study Technology, and

    using those basics,

    initiated a pilot program

with a cross-section ofstudents in his school.

    He first presented the

    three barriers to study

    to eighth and ninth

graders, then to primary through middle-

school students, and then to high school

    mathematics and chemistry classes.

    The results were conclusive: Passing

    rates previously hovering at around

30 percent soared to well over 80

percent of all students across all

    grade levels.

Based on the success of that pilot

    program, which used only the

    fundamentals of Study Technology, the

    Kathmandu school principal enrolled

    at the Applied Scholastics International

campus in Missouri for the full lineup of

    Applied Scholastics teacher training.

    The program included Advanced

    Fundamentals of Instruction, and the

    Applied Scholastics Curriculum Course.

Upon returning to Nepal, he first put

it all into operation in his own school.

He then set out to deliver Study

    Technology classes to all teachers

in one of the deep poverty zones of

the country. He held workshops for

    instructors in remote rural communities,

including on a hilltop 350 kilometers

    from Kathmandu where he instructed

teachers of 500 students from rice-

    farming villages.

The Nepalese results demonstratethe potential for educational renewal

    with Study Technology. That one

educator has built a network of 1,600

    Study Technology educators who are

in turn transforming education in their

classrooms. He has also established a

    Contending with outdated organizational

    and communication facilities, the nation

needed to adapt quickly to compete in

    the post-Soviet world.

    Recognizing that the

    success of the country

    depended upon the degree

    its citizens possessed

    a high level of language

    and communication skills,

    in 1997 a Scientologist

    established the first

    Applied Scholastics

    center in Prague to bring

    L. Ron Hubbards Study

    Technology to the Czech

    Republic.

    Called Life Improvement

    Through Education (LITE), the program

    offered the technology of learning

how to learn any subject. The center

rapidly expanded and soon two more

    LITE centers were formed. Additionally,

    an Applied Scholastics office serving

both the Czech Republic and Slovakia

    opened its doors.

A team of Applied Scholastics staff

    members traveled from Prague to

    Applied Scholastics headquarters at

    Spanish Lake, Missouri, for advanced

training that equipped them to help

even more people in their home country.

LITE centers soon opened in cities

    throughout the Czech Republica

total of 13 in that nation, with other

    affiliates in Slovakia, India, Germany

and Spain. To date, LITE has delivered

more than 1 million hours of training to

    21,000 students.

To meet the growing demand for Study

    Technology, tutoring centers called

BASIC were also launched, with the

    mission of helping people improve

study and learning skills and li teracy

level. To date, 22 BASIC centers

have opened in the Czech Republic

and in Slovakia, enrolling more than

    3,500 students, including children

with special needs who benefit greatly

    from Study Technology when other

    schooling has failed.

In 2010, the group opened the f irstApplied Scholastics elementary school

in the nation. In 2011, the widespread

    impact and demonstrated efficacy of

    Study Technology was acknowledged

by the Czech Ministry of Education

when it announced that the central

    Applied Scholastics text, the Basic

    Study Manual, was officially accredited

    for training the nations teachers.

    Central Mexicos state of Puebla,

described as lagging behind the rest of

Mexico, reported that some 17 percent

of all students drop out before

    completing primary school. A high

    percentage are functionally illiterate.

A 2010 rescue mission, initiated and

led by two graduates of the Applied

    Scholastics Delphi School and titled

    Entiende Mas, Logra Mas (Understand

    More, Achieve More), changed those

    statistics dramatically. The project was

    piloted in Aquiles Serdan Elementary

    School. Initial delivery taught Study

    Technology fundamentals to 300

    students in 30-minute slots spanning

four weeks. Students were then tested

on standardized national exams and, as

Puebla educators noted, It was quite

enough to see results. Aquiles Serdan

    Elementary School moved from the

    lower-70th percentile to the top-rated

    school in its district.

A large primary school, Jesus Reyes

Heroes, did the same, through the

    use of Study Technologyspecifically,

450 students learning the definitions of

words in the subject of mathematics.

That school rose to number one in its

    district on national achievement tests.

    With that came confirmation from

the Ministry of Education that in

    Puebla schools adopting Study

    Technology, the percentage of

students scoring at the Good and

    Excellent level on a standardized

national test increased 23 times more

    than the national average increase.

Such results led to 600 teachers

representing a cross section of schools

    statewide receiving training on learning

    and literacy tools. Their graduation

    ceremony was a state

    function, with Pueblas

    Minister of Education

    presiding and authorizing

    state funding to immediately

    double the number of Study

    Technology-trained teachers

by the end of the school

    year. His conclusion: This is

    what Mexico needs.

    Teachers from Puebla state

    continue to enroll on Study

    Technology courses for educators,

making a brighter future possible for

students by giving them the tools to

    learn and apply any subject.

The need to study does not end with formal education.

Anyone in the work force, whether on the factory floor or

in the executive suite, must have the ability to assimilate,

retain and then apply important information. Success in life

    depends on it.

Applied Scholastics is making it possible for anyone to

    acquire this skill.

    The numbers tell the story:

From its teacher-training campus near St. Louis, Missouri,Applied Scholastics has implemented L. Ron Hubbards

Study Technology through more than 1,100 schools and

    tutoring groups in 72 nations.

Nearly 135,000 educators trained by Applied Scholastics

have brought Study Technology to 38 million students

worldwide, opening doors previously closed to them. These

students in turn take their skills into their communities,

    states and nations.

Supported by the Church of Scientology and its

parishioners, Applied Scholastics is in the forefront of

defeating illiteracy and raising the level of education.

The contributions of L. Ron Hubbard and Applied Scholastics to the

fields of literacy and learning have changed the lives of millions across the

globe. Applied Scholastics frequently receives letters of recognition and

endorsements from educators, parents and students in acknowledgement

of both its programs and the power of Study Technology.

    EdUCATORS

It is my pleasure to have had the opportunity to enhance andstrengthen my pedagogical practices due to the training at

Applied Scholastics International Training Campus. I want to

commend you and your staff for a stellar record of accomplishments

and the help you are providing our future generations. Thank

you for what you are doing to improve the educational system of

Americas schools today. Assistant Superintendent, U.S.

Ihave never before come across a method which wouldenable the instructor to take any failed student and rehabilitatethem in that subject to a point where they understood it and

could apply it and could continue study in that subject with no

further difficulty. This I have done many times since 1973, usingMr. Hubbards Study Technology. Educator, United Kingdom

Without reservation, I can say that the professionalism of the

personnel, thoroughness of the training and the quality of the

Applied Scholastics Achievement Program assisted our school in

achieving the final product that was the best I have ever experienced.

By focusing on identifying and repairing the academic deficiencies of

underperforming fourth through sixth grade students, [our school] was

recognized as a Gold Star school and selected as recipient of the

Monsanto School of Excellence in Education Scholarship.

    School Principal, U.S.

Study Technology is a new look. L. Ron Hubbard has been boldenough to assert that for any learning problem there is a workable

solution. Thousands of people trained in his Study Technology know this

is true and feel they now have in their hands the missing tool necessary

for both comprehension and the ability to apply in any chosen field

of study. Professor of English, U.S.

In my capacity as the reading consultant for the Danish government,

I have dedicated my professional life to understanding how

to ensure all students achieve a high level of literacy and thus

success. After having witnessed firsthand the remarkable results

of L. Ron Hubbards Study Technology, I believe it is the vital

and strong foundation on which literacy can be built throughout

the world. Advisor, Ministry of Education, Denmark

In this increasingly technological and ever-changing society, it is

paramount that all students learn how to learn. Applied Scholastics

programs accomplish this. Furthermore, the most salient feature of

Applied Scholastics materials is that they promote self-regulated learning

by allowing students to successfully overcome barriers to learning with

little or no assistance from another person. University Professor, U.S.

    PAREnTS

Our son is currently being tutored by Applied Scholastics. Let mebegin by saying what you do isawesome. I am a parent witha Masters Degree and numerous awards, but in 3 years of trying, I

could not help my child understand what you have helped him obtain

in less than 3 weeks. He began tutoring in early February and a week

later was asking formore tutoring. To understand my excitement, you

must understand that although my son is amazingly talented in other

areas, academics posed a hardship for him. He is in the 5th gradebut was reading at 2nd and 3rd grade level. No matter what method I

tried, I could not help him. I felt like I had failed my child. Enter Applied

Scholastics. I see a change in my son, not just academically but

personally. There is an air of confidence he now holds. Life has opened

up for him so much more. He could read before, but now he reads and

understands. We have been blessed beyond belief. Parent, U.S.

We had been through 3 years of hell. We were told our son had

ADD, sensory deficiency problems and even autism. We had seen

numerous professionals and therapists. He had medical tests and doctors

tried to convince us to put him on medication for ADD. I hired a tutor but

after a half an hour, she told me she didnt want to waste my money, that

she couldnt help him. His teachers were letting him wander around the

classroom rather than fighting with him to sit down and learn. Fortunately

for us, my mum was talking to a lady who suggested Applied Scholastics.

After ten weeks of tutoring we started to see amazing changes in my

sons reading, writing, comprehension and behavior. He had more

confidence, was asking more questions and was looking forward to

going to tutoring to learn. I decided to learn the techniques myself as

I couldnt believe how much my son had improved and I wanted to be

able to pass this method of learning to my other children. The course

is amazing and it works! My son has now finished his tutoring and the

change in him just makes me so thankful for Applied Scholastics. This

course does work and there is help for our children. Parent, Australia

School had been very difficult for me and I was just barely making

a passing grade. I was always upset and frustrated. Then I did an

Applied Scholastics course called Study Skills for Life. I never had so

much drive and I have never been

    so excited about studying. After

    doing that course and applying

    Study Technology, I enjoyed studying

everything. I then did the Basic

Study Manual course and I moved

faster than ever on my studies. Study

Technology has given me the tools to

    make my dreams become reality.

    High School Student, U.S.

With Study Technology, I am flabbergastingly quick at learning new

things. One great example is when, in three days, after studying the

definitions of the words used in programming websites for the Internet, I

created an awesome website, which incorporated my writing ability and

3-D graphic artistry. I had no previous experience whatsoever with any

type of programming prior to this endeavor. This school, with its truly

workable Study Technology, really deserves an award. Believe me, I know.

    High School Student, U.S.

There are no words that can describe how I truly feel about this

fantastic tutoring I have received. I had been looking for help since

childhood, having been falsely diagnosed with a non-existent learning

disability and not given any solutions or any hope. It has taken me 32

years to find Applied Scholastics. I have completed tutoring and am now

half-way through the Learning How to Learn course. The tutoring and

courses are just fantastic. You have taken away my darkness and given

me light and hope. Student, Australia
