They went from paper picking slips in the warehouse to an affordable and quick to implement warehouse management system that optimised picking of orders for their 3PL (Third Party Logistics) clients. Not only did this save paper usage, increased speed and accuracy, but also meant that due to the increase in efficiency they could reduce their leased forklifts from four to two. This represented considerable savings each month in lease costs and energy costs. 4. Therefore the message for small – medium businesses in Supply Chain and Logistics is that they can access multiple areas of savings and with small outlays, can achieve paybacks very quickly. It is actually a no brainer, especially with lighting. Some SME’s have replaced their older and less effective clear roof panels and notice d the huge improvement and others have look at installing solar pipes, that distribute light across a wide area for even more coverage. CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

The SCLAA trusts our members, partners and the wider industry have had a successful and rewarding year. The SCLAA have also had a successful year, directly organising over 70 events in every State and

Territory of Australia. We have also supported selected third party conferences and events and partnered with complementary Associations across Australia. We want to thank everyone for their support, feedback and suggestions with all our events during the year.

We have again showed we are the premier Association for Supply Chain and Logistics professionals across Australia, with networking and industry events across a wide range of topics of interest for members.

We have just held our annual Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. This is the 54th year of the Awards; the longest running awards program in our expansive; an industry that represents 15% of Australia’s GDP and $A201 billion per annum in revenue. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners and we look forward to our 2015 ASCL Awards which will be held in Perth.

Support for the SCLAA is at an all-time high from our National Partners, as companies see the value we provide in marketing, access to prospective customers across Australia and the leverage from the SCLAA brand. We would like to thank them for their support. We would also would like to thank Corporate Partners for their continued support and attendance at events across Australia.

As members will be aware, during 2014 the SCLAA delivered workshops and webinars as part of the Energy Efficiency Grant we received from the Department of Industry. All materials are on our website with two links from the home page. The SCLAA also organised special Awards for small – medium businesses, who attended a workshop or webinar and had the best implementation of energy savings measures.

The National Awards were independently judged by ClimateWorks and won by Xtreme Freight who are based in Tullamarine in Melbourne. Chief Executive Officer and owner Amanda O’Brien attended an SCLAA energy efficiency workshop in February and implemented four of the measures recommended for quick wins.

These included:1. Driver Induction Training – Eco Driving, showing in-house

2. Replaced roof sheeting above racking aisles with clear polycarbonate panels, meaning expensive to run halogen lights could remain off during sunny days, saving considerable electricity usage. This measure had an almost immediate payback, considering the high cost of running and replacing globes in halogen lights.

3. 2 SCLAA NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2014

Well, in the last four months of 2014 our website went into overdrive, with over 100,000 page views and our website visitors are up 149% over the corresponding period of 2013.

Another pleasing aspect has been that 66% of the viewers are new and have not been on the site before, on the device they are using. Just on that mobile phone users accessing our website and on the rise as are Google searches from mobile phones.

As you would expect, the visits to our website closely followed the population diversity of Australia.

These figures are just for Australian based searchers and when you add overseas visitors, the figures are even higher. Of the overseas visitors India, USA, Singapore, UK and China and the largest in rank order.

The SCLAA Board and Marketing Sub Committee are looking at ways to harness this potential and popularity in order to increase the value we can return to Members and National Partners.

Finding suitable and popular events is always challenging as we have a diverse membership, so if you have any suggestions, please send them through to us. We are all volunteers and we undertake this as we are passionate about the industry, so we are always grateful for suggestions and advice. Further, if you believe you can contribute, please let us know and we will find a place for you on one of our state/territory based Divisional committees, where the events are created.

The SCLAA is Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific Logistics Federation and next year by rotation we become the Chair for two years. We have recommended that the APLF put a plan in place to dramatically increase the profile of the APLF in Asia Pacific, and in turn increase the membership attractiveness of the various countries Associations.

During the second half of 2014, we completed the rollout of workshops and webinars for the SCLAA’s Energy Efficiency Program. All material and the popular online tool that allows users to enter their facilities and road asset energy costs is available by clicking on the Energy Efficiency Solutions menu pick on our home page. On behalf of the SCLAA National Board, Division Committees and all the volunteers at the SCLAA, we would like to wish members a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year and continued success in 2015.

Peter Trotter, General Manager of Marketing at Dematic, passed away recently after a short illness. Peter worked at materials handling and automation company, Dematic (formally Colby), for 34 years and was in fact the longest serving Dematic employee. An extremely creative and strategic marketer,

Peter was a key contributor to the market leading position of Dematic. He was greatly respected and admired by colleagues and peers, and seen by many as an elder statesman of the industry.

Peter also had a successful international wheelchair racing career in which he set five world records and won gold medals at two Paralympics. He was a significant contributor to the development of wheelchair sports in Australia.

Peter served on the National Committee on Sport and Recreation for Disabled People, the Elite Sports Committee of the Australian Institute of Sport, and The Australian Olympic Committee’s Sport for All Commission. In 1991 he was awarded the Jan Bens Memorial Prize for his inspiration of, and contribution to, the disabled community.

In 2000 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal by the then Prime Minister, John Howard. Peter’s contribution to our industry, sport and the community was prolific. He will be sorely missed by all.

The SCLAA is pleased to announce that Yit Ming Ng has been elected to Chair the SCLAA’s Future Leaders Group.

Ming works in Vehicle Scheduling & Plant Liaison at General Motors Holden at Port Melbourne and part of the Victorian Future Leaders Group and Committee.

The SCLAA values the inclusiveness of our Association and this role rotates annually around our Divisions/States, so as to ensure we have good representation across Australia. It also gives our younger members leadership roles in the industry, which is great for their career progression.

The SCLAA would like to thank Stanley Fan from Western Australia for his excellent work in the role and handover. Encouraging our Future Leaders is vital for the growth and success of the Supply Chain and Logistics industry, and the SCLAA organises events, recognition and networking to ensure this happens across Australia in every State and Territory.

The Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards were presented by the SCLAA in late November. The gala event at the mighty Melbourne Cricket Ground was an outstanding occasion that again

demonstrated the excellent skills and professionalism of the Event Organising Team led by Nerida Kelton, and of course the ‘silver fox’, consummate emcee Vince Aisthorpe.

During the evening the audience took time out to offer a respectful silence for the sad passing of Australian Cricketer Phil Hughes, and courageous Industry stalwart Peter Trotter. These poignant tributes appropriately expressed the compassion of our Supply Chain and Logistics Community.

I was most impressed by the number and quality of the nominations for the Future Leaders Award. Our Profession and Industries are certainly dependant on an on-going stream of young people choosing to enter and develop their capabilities. The Future Leaders Award is a very important means of identifying and showcasing talented and aspirational young people. You should take the time to peruse the credentials of the 2014 Award Nominees and the winners, and maybe send a congratulatory comment.

While on the subject of Future Leaders and young people it would be remiss not to mention the great value of mentoring. I took advice from a book some years back. The advice was,

“Regardless of your age or status if you haven’t got a mentor, go and get one; and if you aren’t a mentor, go and be one.” Fortunately I have had a succession of mentors that offered me hope, inspiration, and pathways for improvement. They often ‘held up the mirror so I could get a clearer picture of myself, my attitudes and aptitudes’. However, in being a mentor to many young people (and some not so young) over the years, I found that as well as focusing on their issues and opportunities, I also learned a lot and derived countless valuable insights.

Mentoring offers awesome opportunities for mentors and mentees. You should vigorously embrace it today!

I am getting a bit angry about the explosion in the quantity of information being promulgated from various sources. The flood of information doesn’t necessarily result in better decision making with much of the information being of doubtful credibility or value.

With the Internet of everything, social media, big data, and such we are continually inundated with stuff that is often valueless. Inboxes are teeming with messages that just distract us from focusing on important data and/or tasks. It is time to rebel against the torrent of meaningless emails! Consign the rubbish to its rightful place—the rubbish bin—and commit to sending only relevant and useful stuff! By the way I endorse the OHIO concept of dealing with emails each day. That is Only Handle It Once.

Supply Chain and Logistics (SCL) Research is another issue that concerns me. Various institutions and/or collaborations purport to be pursuing research in SCL. Other organisations have announced plans to create new programs or hubs to engage in SCL Research. However I don’t really see much real benefit flowing to Australian Industries, Professionals or Practitioners. We don’t need more academically designed research.

We need our Profession and our industries to fund and target research and development issues that will make a real measurable contribution to our individual and business capabilities and competitiveness. Of course academic institutions have skills and resources that facilitate research. True partnerships (not pretend) between business and academia in well-designed and properly funded centres will deliver the best outcomes. It is critically important for research to be practical/applied and for the benefit of professionals, practitioners, and industries.

At the end of 2014 I am grateful for many good things that have happened in the past year, but I am also very concerned about a lot of people in our Supply Chain and Logistics Community that are doing it tough as a consequence of job losses and such. Hopefully we can unite to create a more competitive Australia in 2015 with on-going opportunities for employment. Resilience can be a powerful tool.

I wish you and yours a peaceful and satisfying Christmas and a flourishing, healthy, and rewarding 2015.

DATA INTEGRATION THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING AUSTRALIAN DISTRIBUTION PRACTICES

Australian Research Report Identifies Opportunities for Improved Automation

A recent study of more than 300 IT and business decision-makers has highlighted the biggest distribution challenges and opportunities facing Australian businesses. The independent research

report From Business Processes to Product Distribution, commissioned by Epicor Software Corporation, a global leader in business software solutions for manufacturing, distribution, retail and services organisations, and produced by IT research firm, Telsyte, was based on a survey of Australian organisations with more than 20 employees.

According to Telsyte Senior Analyst, Rodney Gedda, “The perennial challenge of data integration is alive and well within the distribution process as most organisations cite this as the number one factor hampering their capability. With better data integration comes better automation and decision making.”

The survey findings also suggest Australian businesses have an opportunity to improve existing distribution processes. “Unfortunately, nearly half of all organisations with existing distribution processes do not have the software or enterprise resource planning (ERP) system capable of effectively managing it,” Gedda says. “The time is right to explore automated distribution management options. CIOs should take a close look at what types of products and services they are distributing and the potential for process improvement might be profound.”

Key findings from the report include:• 65% of organisations cite data processing and integration

as hampering distribution capability with nearly half claiming their existing software and ERP is not suitable for distribution.

• Nearly two-thirds of enterprises have some form of distribution process, involving products or services.

• More than 80% of organisations have at least some problem with product or service distribution.

• More than 50% of CIOs in organisations with distribution processes believe better distribution would increase revenue and optimise business processes with a further 38% citing reduced operating costs.

The findings suggest that distribution practices, while prolific, do not garner the same attention by IT and business leaders as other high-profile business processes like customer relationship management (CRM) and mobile enablement. Gedda believes there is an underlying opportunity in strengthening these weaknesses. “More than half of the CIOs that took place in the study believe improved distribution can increase revenue so the bottom line can be the winner with better distribution management.”

“There are many complex challenges facing Australian businesses but we believe there are genuine opportunities to increase efficiencies to out-dated distribution processes,” said Craig Charlton, general manager, Asia Pacific for Epicor. “We are starting to see a greater focus on distribution as business models evolve in areas like trade and manufacturing, however, many companies are still yet to realise the benefits of adopting an advanced ERP system.”

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

This will be my last communication to the membership

as Chairman as under the constitution my time is

completed and a new Chairman will be voted on at the

but unfortunately that will not be the case. With the new Board

commencing from the 1st March all initiatives will be reviewed

I would like to thank the Board for their support and I would

SCLAA COMMENCES ENERGY SAVING WORKSHOPS

The SCLAA is pleased to announce the commencement of the rollout of its Energy Efficiency Workshops. Over the next

seven months, the free workshops will be held in 22 regional and rural areas across Australia, plus all 8 capital cities.

The workshops will provide the over 400,000 Small-Medium Businesses (SME’s) who either store and or transport goods

the tools and information to reduce their energy costs, in the warehouse and on the road. This will enable them to lower their

cost of doing business and improve their competitive advantage. Many SME’s and their owners work long days, long hours

and sometimes seven days a week. It was therefore imperative the SCLAA delivered the content in a format that provided the

information succinctly and clearly.

The SCLAA is creating an online interactive tool, which provides a 4 step guide to identifying, evaluating and implementing energy

saving opportunities. The tool will steps the SME through an energy saving calculator that covers transport, warehouse, cool

rooms / freezers and materials handling and generates the opportunities and potential savings. The tool which will be available

on-line by the end of February will provide the ability to download fact sheets, how to guides, case studies, examples of suppliers

and details on grants available to SME’s.

During industry research and content development, it has become apparent that there are numerous significant energy saving

opportunities that also lead to other monetary savings in the business including building insurance, wear and tear, hours worked

plus opportunities for improving customer service. To assist SME’s most workshops will start at 7.30 am and conclude by 10.30

am and will also be available by webinar. The SCLAA wishes to thank its partner ClimateWorks Australia, who with Green Steps

both part of the Monash Sustainability Institute, have developed and will be delivering the content.

STRAIGHT TALK WITH DAVID DOHERTY

At the 2013 Australian and Supply Chain and Logistics Awards last November I had the honour to publicly

announce that the long standing Future Leaders Award would now be dedicated to Vince Aisthorpe. I said, “Vince Aisthorpe is now perpetually recognised by SCLAA, and universally by industry, as an inspiring, challenging, courageous and tireless champion of young people and aspiring Future Leaders”.

The permanent tribute to Vince is well deserved. He has made a unique contribution to the Supply Chain and Logistics for more than twenty years. Of course he will be remembered as a genuine leader.

The definition of leadership often assumes an historical view of macho toughness, overconfidence, charismatic, and ultimate decision making in a driving pursuit for results. The Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute suggests that,” leaders might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connection.”

Bill Gates said,“ Leaders are those who empower others.” While Peter Drucker determinedly stated, “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers ”

The findings and assessments from other studies indicate there are certain characteristics or traits that good leaders possess. Amongst others these include: Vision; Self and Social Awareness; Communication; Positivity; Drive.

How do you define leadership, and what characteristics do you see as necessary for a leader? The best leaders I have known were unselfish, empathetic, empowering of others, purposeful, inspirational, learners, mentors, and respectful with unshakeable

personal principles and integrity. I didn’t meet too many people of that ilk but I learned lifelong lessons from those few great people.

I have just read a book titled ‘DRIVE’ authored by Daniel H. Pink. The cover promises the book will expose, “The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”. It was recommended to me by David Parkin OAM, a tremendously successful and decorated AFL Coach. He said if he had read DRIVE before he started coaching he would have utilised significantly different strategies and attitudes. Pink debunks the long held business reliance on carrot and stick management and proposes that autonomy, purpose (a greater than yourself purpose), and mastery are key components of future leadership. I recommend you get the book now, study it, and share it with your colleagues.

The Supply Chain and Logistics Profession has many very effective leaders with years of experience. The challenge is to inspire and provide opportunities for aspiring Future Leaders who can embrace the new paradigm for leadership. The old ways will not suffice as we head into volatile uncharted waters in terms of technology and restructuring of industry, and perhaps capitalism and democracy. The SCLAA and other Associations Awards for Future Leaders are very valuable. We must build on and develop and support these Awards.

“ Tradition is what you resort to when you don’t have the time or money to do it right ” (Kurt Adler)

QUEENSLAND YEAR IN REVIEW

Vince AisthorpeState President - Queensland [email protected]

Wow what another excellent year. This year Queensland continued to focus on high quality member services, increased membership and improved communication to members

through the use of technology.

Once again I believe the SCLAA led the way with value for money services. Site visits were consistently booked out for each event, Logistics Lounges; where the level of discussion with the presenter and attendees indicated that the topics we focused on where contemporary and important to our members are just two of the event types that we offered this year.

The mentoring program was again fully subscribed and I know talking with the mentees involved they believed the program was very worthwhile as they continue to work and network with their mentors and others participants in the program.

The annual Queensland Supply Chain and Logistics conference, received feedback indicating that it was the best conference

we have ever held ever in the 15 years that it has been running. High quality internationally acclaimed speakers such as Dr Edward Frazelle, Amanda Gore and Jane Anderson led a group of highly-motivated local and interstate speakers who delivered case studies on contemporary topics that enabled the delegates to take away some real ‘gold nuggets’ that they could immediately apply to their own work or personal situation.

The conference dinner was again a sensational event with more than $15,000 raised that will go to our charity of choice Foodbank. This will enable us to pack 800 Xmas hampers for those who are less fortunate than us and allow them to have a much better Christmas this year.

The Queensland Supply Chain & Logistics Awards were highly successful with a near record number of entries for the various awards and

a significant number of nominees winning their categories in the Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards at the recent national awards event in Melbourne.

The Future Leaders Group (FLG) continues to grow in leaps and bounds with a highly-motivated and effective committee focused on delivering what our future leaders are looking for.

We continue to endeavour to increase the level of membership of the association and urge you to encourage work colleagues and your broader network to join our family.

This year we have made a real effort to increase the use of technology with Linked In usage being significantly increased and accessed by our members.

Overall another fantastic year, one where our great sponsors and members have continued to support all our initiatives and be part of a very vibrant and successful association. Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention the incredible support that our volunteer committee provides me as the President and you as the members. I indeed owe everyone a real level of gratitude.

So once again thanks for your wonderful support this year, I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and the best for the new year and hope to see you at one or many of our events next year

IBS WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM NETWORKING EVENT

New South Wales and Victoria SCLAA recently held a Warehouse Management System (WMS) Networking Event organised by National Partner IBS. John

Ballantyne who is the regular facilitator of the APICS CPIM certification program and also the past president of the NSW chapter of apicsAU, gave an excellent presentation on ‘Make Your Warehouse Your Biggest Asset’. John provided a valuable insight as to why is warehouse design crucial to efficiency and how do streamlined WMS processes drive customer success.

Following the four members events organised in the second half of 2014, NSW members attended the CIPS 10th Annual Conference at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. Over two days there was some great speakers and presentations with Talent, Transformation, Technology, & Tomorrow being the theme. There was a great speech by Mark Donaldson VC, an Army soldier with real honour, trust and integrity. The SCLAA stand, received some great attention from companies

and individuals all over Australia and visitors from overseas. With membership and National Partner enquiries, CIPS awards followed, at Dockside, Cockle Bay Wharf.

NSW Division also recently ran a Routing and Scheduling event that was well-attended by many members, hearing from Joost Bekker from, PTV Group, demonstrating the benefits of route optimisation and scheduling for transport businesses and how this could be applied for energy savings.

NSW SCLAA is also calling out to members who are looking to get more involved by becoming a part of the NSW committee to assist Dean, Mark and myself with new ideas and running some more successful events and networking opportunities in 2015! We have monthly phone hook ups and also get together a couple times a year! If you are interested please contact me at [email protected] or 0404 970 545.

WA WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT

19SCLAA NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2014

WA WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT

As the incoming President for the WA Division I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have twenty-nine years’ experience within the supply chain and logistics industry that started back as a young seventeen year old joining the Army and being allocated to the Corps of Transport as a driver. I served eighteen years in the full time Army before

transferring to the Army Reserve in 2003, and I still continue to provide service to this day as the Executive Officer at the rank of Major in the 13th Combat Service Support Battalion.

In my civilian career I have worked in companies such as Cargill Australia as a Senior Logistics Coordinator, the Australian Wheat Board as the Port Logistics Coordinator, the Office of Transport

Security as a Transport Security Inspector, St John Ambulance WA as the Supply and Distribution Manager and as recent as the 10th November the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as the Customer Service Delivery Manager. My main motivator in all of these roles is having the opportunity to take a group of people, and through the application of sound supply chain principles, tried and tested management practices and robust leadership they are transformed into a high performing team achieving great outcomes for the organisation.

I am looking forward to the opportunity of leading the committee of the WA Division in 2015 to grow our membership base and provide well-presented professional development events that will furnish our members with current up to date industry knowledge that can be transferred back into their roles and workplaces to strengthen our industry. As the festive season fast approaches I would like to sign off by wishing all of our members and their families a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

In the middle of November a ‘Technology in Supply Chain Management’ breakfast event jointly staged by CIPS and the SCLAA WA at Curtin University’s HIVE. Dr Torsten Reiners supported by one of his post grad students visually presented a in a state-of-the-art facility a progress report on the development of virtual reality based training tools, with an emphasis on safety, in a logistics environment. All who attended were impressed by the three dimensional demonstration of a

container dock working environment, and with the information conveyed regarding the increasing adoption of this technology in the commercial world.
