On the first day of SMART, we released our new website sclaa.com.au This website is clean, crisp and allows us more flexibility and interaction with members, National Partners and the wider Supply Chain and Logistics industry.

Our Energy Efficiency portal is now on the main website and Google has already crawled and ranked our new website in the first 24 hours. In the first two weeks, there were over 4,000 hits, of which well over half were first time visitors.

The SCLAA as promised, lodged a submission to the Competition Review Policy announced by the Federal Government. The SCLAA will look to become more active in our industry, its competitiveness and direction to the long term benefit of members.

STRAIGHT TALK WITH DAVID DOHERTY

At the 2013 Australian and Supply Chain and Logistics Awards last November I had the honour to publicly

announce that the long standing Future Leaders Award would now be dedicated to Vince Aisthorpe. I said, “Vince Aisthorpe is now perpetually recognised by SCLAA, and universally by industry, as an inspiring, challenging, courageous and tireless champion of young people and aspiring Future Leaders”.

The permanent tribute to Vince is well deserved. He has made a unique contribution to the Supply Chain and Logistics for more than twenty years. Of course he will be remembered as a genuine leader.

The definition of leadership often assumes an historical view of macho toughness, overconfidence, charismatic, and ultimate decision making in a driving pursuit for results. The Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute suggests that,” leaders might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connection.”

Bill Gates said,“ Leaders are those who empower others.” While Peter Drucker determinedly stated, “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers ”

The findings and assessments from other studies indicate there are certain characteristics or traits that good leaders possess. Amongst others these include: Vision; Self and Social Awareness; Communication; Positivity; Drive.

How do you define leadership, and what characteristics do you see as necessary for a leader? The best leaders I have known were unselfish, empathetic, empowering of others, purposeful, inspirational, learners, mentors, and respectful with unshakeable

personal principles and integrity. I didn’t meet too many people of that ilk but I learned lifelong lessons from those few great people.

I have just read a book titled ‘DRIVE’ authored by Daniel H. Pink. The cover promises the book will expose, “The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”. It was recommended to me by David Parkin OAM, a tremendously successful and decorated AFL Coach. He said if he had read DRIVE before he started coaching he would have utilised significantly different strategies and attitudes. Pink debunks the long held business reliance on carrot and stick management and proposes that autonomy, purpose (a greater than yourself purpose), and mastery are key components of future leadership. I recommend you get the book now, study it, and share it with your colleagues.

The Supply Chain and Logistics Profession has many very effective leaders with years of experience. The challenge is to inspire and provide opportunities for aspiring Future Leaders who can embrace the new paradigm for leadership. The old ways will not suffice as we head into volatile uncharted waters in terms of technology and restructuring of industry, and perhaps capitalism and democracy. The SCLAA and other Associations Awards for Future Leaders are very valuable. We must build on and develop and support these Awards.

“ Tradition is what you resort to when you don’t have the time or money to do it right ” (Kurt Adler)

NEW INDEPENDENT DIRECTOR APPOINTED

China’s logistics sector remains hugely complex, brutally competitive and massively fragmented - even the top 50 logistics players, led by Cosco, Sinotrans, CSC Holdings and China Shipping

with combined sales revenues of more than RMB 2 billion, have less than 2% share of the total market.

Transportation accounts for over 52% of China’s logistics costs. Trucking accounts for the largest proportion of the logistics market in China with 78% of all domestic cargo being moved by road. A huge and massively fragmented sector with over 790,000 road hauliers, the top 20 trucking companies have only 2% of the total market.

Providing transportation to service nationwide domestic distribution networks typically involves engaging numerous trucking sub-contractors – with the majority of them being owner-operators with just one or two trucks – rarely of good quality and with little, if any, modern technology. High road tolls, stringent regulations and increased taxes are just some of the issues facing logistics companies in China, with road tolls now representing over 30% of total transportation costs.

International logistics companies providers are providing nationwide transportation solutions only through tightly managed networks of pre-qualified sub-contractors, combined with adoption and deployment of proprietary technology solutions for electronic track and trace.

The mainland government is keen to improve the overall quality of warehousing and transportation services and the logistics sector itself. In 2014 the Ministry of Commerce announced new policies to develop China’s commerce and trade-logistics industry. These new policies include the further development of both e-commerce and cold chain sectors, whilst local governments are encouraged to implement tax incentives for logistics companies.

With the exponential increase in B2C e-commerce orders severely stretching the existing logistics capabilities, users and service providers are all keen for government support to further develop the industry in China.

Learn more about the exciting developments in China’s Logistics Sector at the 10th China (Shenzhen) International Logistics and Transportation Fair (CILF 2015) taking place in Shenzhen, China.

BEYONDBLUE

Approximately 24 million currently live in Australia, of which 11.7 million are in work. Roughly 10% of that workforce work in the Logistics & Supply Chain sector, a number set to rise dramatically

with the freight task due to double by 2030.

Depression and anxiety affect over 3 million people here, an eighth of the entire population. As you look around your workplace, the chance of not seeing someone who is affected from by stress of anxiety is therefore pretty slim.

The chances are though, you’ll have no idea who they are. Unlike most illnesses and conditions, there is still a huge stigma attached to any mental illness or disorder, so most people suffer in silence in fear of being judged, ostracized, mocked, misunderstood or having their careers put in jeopardy. It can be embarrassing to admit, and is a dark, lonely and frightening place to be.

beyondblue are a charity who were set up in 2000 to both help those suffering with depression and anxiety and to also help raise awareness through programs and education about the conditions.

From helplines to running tailored programs and education events targeting specific demographics with individual requirements such as gender, age, ethnicity and sexual orientation specific.

They help put people in touch with health care professionals, organise events, liaise with other organisations, provide support for sufferers and relatives, and vigorously work towards changing perceptions and raising awareness and understanding in order to build a community throughout Australia who better understand depression and anxiety.

With so many people affected but struggling to come to terms with or recognise these conditions, beyondblue really do make a tremendous difference. Other than helping to combat these conditions and raise awareness and understanding because it’s the right thing to do, there’s also a very practical reason to get involved within the Logistics and Supply Chain sectors.

Mental health conditions such as stress, depression and anxiety are the single highest cause of absenteeism globally as well as in Australia, with men taking longer periods of absence per episode. As approximately 75% of the logistics sector is male, the economic impact of these conditions is staggering, costing the industry hundreds of millions dollars each year. By running programs, awareness courses, taking a more vested interest in the mental well-being of your employees and getting involved with organisations like beyondblue, you can not only help those suffering with anxiety and depression but make a significant impact on the profitability and effectiveness of your business.

WOMEN IN PROCUREMENT

On behalf of the SCLAA I recently attended the Women In Procurement Conference. With the influence of procurement becoming a core strategic function there are heightened

expectations for a broader range of functional and leadership capabilities to enhance business efficiency and fuel enterprise innovation. This conference certainly delivered high-quality speakers giving great insight into the vast industry sectors and growth in complexity and core skills required from Supply Chain professionals today.

Antoinette Brandi, the Former Group Manager – Procurement & Supply Chain for Leighton Contractors opened proceedings with fervour and kept the packed program on schedule and her professional insight meant that all discussions/questions remained relevant to the vast array of topics covered, in the two days. The panel discussions were insightful offering practical experience of the challenges and expectations of world’s Best Practice for Procurement Specialists.

The Panel Discussion: Is there a glass ceiling in Procurement? included insights from Megan Main, Chief Executive Officer of Health Purchasing Victoria, Janine Anderiesz, Strategic Sourcing & Facilities Director, GE Capital Australia & New Zealand and Sarah Collins, Chief Procurement Officer, NSW Road & Maritime Services. Covering a range of topics such as what are the challenges for career advancement in procurement? How can procurement leaders leverage skills to create a holistic and capable team and what are the opportunities for career advancement?

Developing the skills and Capabilities for Procurement Leadership was a particularly interesting topic with Karen Carmichael, the Chief Financial Officer for Versent giving an informative and passionate speech that held the audiences attention and was very thought provoking. Karen addressed topics such as developing leadership styles, challenging and enhancing organisational systems and enhancing a positive culture through decisive and responsive leadership.

Day 2 of the conference engaged us with informative topics such as transforming the procurement division into the broader value proposition to the whole of the business and how the global economic outlook impacts on our Supply Chain and procurement strategy in a global marketplace.

Networking with professionals including Gladys Liu, Former Special Advisor on China Affairs to the Premier of Victoria and Coretta Bessi, the Chief Procurement Officer of the NBN Co. offered not only an inspiring insight into their experience but that there are incredible individuals working in an industry that they not only provides challenges to them everyday but broadens the horizons and future leadership aspirations of all women.

In early June the SCLAA WA Division staged a breakfast event at the State Tennis Centre entitled ‘The People Side of Supply Chain Projects – Human Change Management’. A healthy gathering of logisticians

shared breakfast, networked and listened to two speakers giving their own unique perspectives on the subject.

Emphasising the cultural diversity that Human Change Management must embrace Wilson Casado (of Brazilian ancestry) spoke about HCMBOK methodology and demonstrated it through a group exercise. Dom Thatcher (of Mauritian descent) related his personal experiences of the human perspective of business transformation from 25 years at Australia Post.

Each was inspirational in his own way.

Wilson’s presentation highlighted the importance of human change management by identifying that 70% of people take a lot of persuasion to change. He went on, through the practical exercise to demonstrate the range of approaches that can be adopted to deliver the necessary persuasion.

Dom spoke passionately of his approach to change management at Post conveying clearly the critical roles that personal commitment and human engagement have played in his projects’ success. He summarised his approach as the ‘Three As’; Affinity, Affiliation and Autonomy and emphasised that innovation must be ‘smart’, clever’ and must ‘do more with less’.

None who attended could have failed to return to work with a boost in motivation. A huge thank you to both of the speakers for engendering this.

The WA program for 2015 continues with a site visit to Rand Transport in early August, and the Golf Day on 30th October, together with at least one event for Future Leaders. All offer great opportunities for networking and corporate sponsorship. Watch for flyers and contact the SCLAA and become an Association member for more information on these.

WELLCAMP AIRPORT SITE VISIT

SCLAA Queensland Division recently ran a site visit to Wellcamp Airport outside of Toowoomba; a very impressive facility that Toowoomba region should be proud of. A few facts...The airport is part of an 850 hectare business park located 18 kms outside of Toowoomba. This is the first

airport built in Australia since Tullamarine Airport in Victoria. The funds for its construction were provided by the Wagner Group (a Toowoomba based company) with no financial assistance from government. Cost to build was between $100 - $200 m with a lot of the materials for its construction sourced from on site itself. A lot of thought has gone to future proof the facility and can be easily expanded. Plans are also in place for a hotel located opposite the terminal in the long term.

4 x 737’s car park on the apron outside the passenger terminal and A380’s or 747s can land there as well. The airstrip is 1.7km long and 45 m wide. A primary objective is to use the airport as part of a freight hub to get local produce to Asia in a short space of time and over time a perishables facility will be built to facilitate this. A rail hub is also planned to be built there to make this area a truly multi modal facility (road, sea and rail). It will have direct access to the Toowoomba Range bypass which is due to commence construction sometime later this year. 11 commercial flights operate between Wellcamp and Sydney each week (QantasLink and Rex Airlines) with charter flights also using the facility. Construction of the business park commenced in 2012, the airport terminal started in early 2014 and operations commenced in Nov 2014. When you consider that there was nothing there 3 years ago it is an amazing feat. They are in the very early stages of the implementation phase of their strategy to make this business park a global success.

The concepts were supported by practical tools that can be used to quickly understand what areas require focus for maximum personal and professional gain.
