CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

The SCLAA hopes 2015 has started well for you and that your career goals will progress this year. Following the 74 events across Australia the SCLAA directly organised in 2014, we have started filling

our Events Calendar for the next few months. We are also working closely with complimentary and proactive industry partners CILTA and CIPSA organising joint events across Australia.

The SCLAA is now the only Industry Association in Australia that offers the Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) Program. With CILTA, the Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) Program is an industry wide accreditation scheme for professionals in the Transport and Logistics Industry. The Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) certification is the benchmark professional qualification of excellence for measuring capability and proficiency within the profession of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

The SCLAA is also streamlining our website, making accessing resources easier and we hope to release this update before Easter. Since my last report in November following our Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards, we have welcomed new National Partners NRMA and Drake International. We thank them for their support. This year our Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards will be held on the 19th of November in Perth and in 2016 in Canberra.

During 2015, the SCLAA will chair the Asia Pacific Logistics Federation (APLF). Our two year term will commence around May, with a meeting of the APLF in Melbourne. The SCLAA is supporting the 10th China International Logistics and Transportation Fair in Shenzhen China in October and details are on our home page www.sclaa.com.au

The SCLAA will shortly announce a major initiative where members can save on fuel and oil at almost 2,000 service stations and truck stops across Australia in every State and Territory, including regional and rural areas.

As members will know, we completed our Energy Efficiency program in 2014 and we have just completed the final milestone deliverable, so our streamlined website will have all the information in one location, to assist members save on energy costs. Following my presentation to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Sydney last year, the IEA has selected the SCLAA’s on-line Energy Saving Tool for inclusion in their Accelerating Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This resource will be made available globally direct from our website. The SCLAA’s website continues to attract visitors and our page views are well up on the same period in 2014. This reflects the quality of events, resources and news we have on our website.

The SCLAA will also be partnering and supporting the 23rd Intelligent Transport Systems Congress in Melbourne in October 2016. The event is expected to have over 5,000 delegates and we are told will preview some very special technology, the first time seen in Australia. www.itsworldcongress2016.com

The SCLAA is run by volunteers and without them we would not be able to function successfully for you. If you would like to be involved in any capacity in any State or Territory please let us know. It is personally rewarding for you as well, in networking and career advancement. On behalf of the SCLAA National Board, Division Committees and all the volunteers at the SCLAA, we would like to wish members a successful and rewarding 2015 and beyond.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

This will be my last communication to the membership

as Chairman as under the constitution my time is

completed and a new Chairman will be voted on at the

March Board meeting. I indicated to you in my previous

communication that the merger discussions with the LAA had

commenced and currently we are awaiting due diligence and legal

advice and so I had hoped to have had this completed by now

but unfortunately that will not be the case. With the new Board

commencing from the 1st March all initiatives will be reviewed

as part of the strategic plan and I hope that they continue with

the merger as I believe it is important for the profession, industry

and most important the members.

I would like to thank the Board for their support and I would

like to acknowledge the contribution of Steve MacPherson and

John LaVacca who will also be leaving the Board and wish them

well as they pursue other interests in their private and business

lives. So I look forward to seeing you at the various SCLAA

functions and wish you a successful year.

SCLAA COMMENCES ENERGY SAVING WORKSHOPS

The SCLAA is pleased to announce the commencement of the rollout of its Energy Efficiency Workshops. Over the next

seven months, the free workshops will be held in 22 regional and rural areas across Australia, plus all 8 capital cities.

The workshops will provide the over 400,000 Small-Medium Businesses (SME’s) who either store and or transport goods

the tools and information to reduce their energy costs, in the warehouse and on the road. This will enable them to lower their

cost of doing business and improve their competitive advantage. Many SME’s and their owners work long days, long hours

and sometimes seven days a week. It was therefore imperative the SCLAA delivered the content in a format that provided the

information succinctly and clearly.

The SCLAA is creating an online interactive tool, which provides a 4 step guide to identifying, evaluating and implementing energy

saving opportunities. The tool will steps the SME through an energy saving calculator that covers transport, warehouse, cool

rooms / freezers and materials handling and generates the opportunities and potential savings. The tool which will be available

on-line by the end of February will provide the ability to download fact sheets, how to guides, case studies, examples of suppliers

and details on grants available to SME’s.

During industry research and content development, it has become apparent that there are numerous significant energy saving

opportunities that also lead to other monetary savings in the business including building insurance, wear and tear, hours worked

plus opportunities for improving customer service. To assist SME’s most workshops will start at 7.30 am and conclude by 10.30

am and will also be available by webinar. The SCLAA wishes to thank its partner ClimateWorks Australia, who with Green Steps

both part of the Monash Sustainability Institute, have developed and will be delivering the content.

STRAIGHT TALK WITH DAVID DOHERTY

At the 2013 Australian and Supply Chain and Logistics Awards last November I had the honour to publicly

announce that the long standing Future Leaders Award would now be dedicated to Vince Aisthorpe. I said, “Vince Aisthorpe is now perpetually recognised by SCLAA, and universally by industry, as an inspiring, challenging, courageous and tireless champion of young people and aspiring Future Leaders”.

The permanent tribute to Vince is well deserved. He has made a unique contribution to the Supply Chain and Logistics for more than twenty years. Of course he will be remembered as a genuine leader.

The definition of leadership often assumes an historical view of macho toughness, overconfidence, charismatic, and ultimate decision making in a driving pursuit for results. The Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute suggests that,” leaders might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connection.”

Bill Gates said,“ Leaders are those who empower others.” While Peter Drucker determinedly stated, “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers ”

The findings and assessments from other studies indicate there are certain characteristics or traits that good leaders possess. Amongst others these include: Vision; Self and Social Awareness; Communication; Positivity; Drive.

How do you define leadership, and what characteristics do you see as necessary for a leader? The best leaders I have known were unselfish, empathetic, empowering of others, purposeful, inspirational, learners, mentors, and respectful with unshakeable

personal principles and integrity. I didn’t meet too many people of that ilk but I learned lifelong lessons from those few great people.

I have just read a book titled ‘DRIVE’ authored by Daniel H. Pink. The cover promises the book will expose, “The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”. It was recommended to me by David Parkin OAM, a tremendously successful and decorated AFL Coach. He said if he had read DRIVE before he started coaching he would have utilised significantly different strategies and attitudes. Pink debunks the long held business reliance on carrot and stick management and proposes that autonomy, purpose (a greater than yourself purpose), and mastery are key components of future leadership. I recommend you get the book now, study it, and share it with your colleagues.

The Supply Chain and Logistics Profession has many very effective leaders with years of experience. The challenge is to inspire and provide opportunities for aspiring Future Leaders who can embrace the new paradigm for leadership. The old ways will not suffice as we head into volatile uncharted waters in terms of technology and restructuring of industry, and perhaps capitalism and democracy. The SCLAA and other Associations Awards for Future Leaders are very valuable. We must build on and develop and support these Awards.

“ Tradition is what you resort to when you don’t have the time or money to do it right ” (Kurt Adler)

How do you measure logistics quality? Unfortunately, there is no industry standard. In fact, there are so many different measures that many managers have given up trying to measure and compare their logistics

quality with those in other operations. The issue is so complex that universities around the country have entire research projects devoted to identifying the right set of logistics quality indicators. Instead of throwing up our hands, let’s focus on an aspect of logistics quality that we can measure - logistics accuracy.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, accurate means deviating only slightly or within acceptable limits from a standard. According to The Logistics Institute, logistics encompasses customer service, inventory planning, manufacturing and procurement, transportation, and warehousing. Defining the right measurement focus, defining the right standard, and defining the acceptable limits of deviation from the standard for an integrated set of activities as broad as logistics is not simple work.

Let’s consider each issue in turn. First, the right measurement focus. The link and common deliverable of customer service, inventory planning, manufacturing and procurement, transportation, and warehousing is an order. Logistics exists to fill orders. Second, the standard. The standard has to be perfection, otherwise the pursuit of the standard will not yield the order of magnitude improvements needed in all areas of logistics. The focus - an order - the standard - perfection. Alas, the perfect order.

The perfect order is logistically perfect meaning it is:• Perfectly entered (the entry is exactly what the customer

wants) by the means (telephone, direct entry) the customer desired in a single entry,

• Perfectly fillable with the exact quantity of each item available for delivery within the customer-specified delivery window,

• Perfectly picked with the correct quantities of the correct items,

• Perfectly packaged with the customer-designated packaging & labelling,

• Perfectly shipped without damage,• Perfectly delivered in the customer-designated time window

and to the customer-designated location,• Perfectly communicated with order status reports available

24 hours a day,• Perfectly billed with on-time payment, and• Perfectly documented with customer-specified documentation

means including paper, fax, edi, and/or Internet.

Suppose each of these nine logistics activities were performed correctly 95% of the time. Then nearly 40% of the orders would be imperfect. If each of these activities was performed correctly 99% of the time, 10% of the orders would be imperfect. If each of these activities were performed correctly 99.95% of the time, then 0.5% of the orders would be imperfect.

To get an idea of your own performance, take your average performance across the nine activities listed above. Now, multiply that percentage times itself nine times. The answer is a ballpark estimate of your percentage of perfect orders.

There are many lessons in this little exercise. First, you may not even track performance in the nine activities described above. It is difficult to improve something that you don’t measure. Second, you may not recognise the interdependence of these activities. They all contribute to the ultimate logistics objective of filling a customer order. Revenues flow from filling customer orders. An integrated view and assessment of these activities is one step on the path to world-class logistics. Third, you may not believe how low the number is. Though there is not a published industry standard for perfect order performance, most companies fill less than half of their orders perfectly. If you want to know why your customers always seem dissatisfied, there’s the reason.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA PRESIDENTS REPORT

WA UP-COMING EVENTS

SAVE THE DATES

Here it is March already and time is truly flying by. The WA committee has been busy laying the foundations for a successful 2015 for its members. The committee has established three key objectives this year:1. Grow our membership base and reinvigorate past and existing members.2. Provide our members with truly engaging and worthwhile professional development opportunities.

3. Run a pilot program in regional WA that will provide insight into how we can better reach out to companies and individuals within our industry in these locations.

Essentially, the committee believes that the achievement of the first objective will be attained through the sound execution of the second and third objectives. 2015 is to be the year of the members, and the events calendar for 2015 is a platform that presents opportunities for individuals and organisations to expand their professional network within the Supply Chain and Logistics industry in our state.

2015 is a year to get excited about if you are an SCLAA (WA) member. The busy Events Calendar mixes traditional favourites such as the Golf and Awards Days and trips to Fremantle Ports and

Linfox with breakfast seminars and site visits to new or less recently visited locations such as AWH, Western Power and Toll Intermodal. In addition the Future Leaders Group will continue to offer events specially tailored to its members.I think you will agree from all of the above, together with the ample professional networking opportunities that these events bring, that SCLAA membership is excellent value for money.

The first WA event of 2015 is a breakfast briefing at the State Tennis Centre on Transformation Leadership in Supply Chain Management. Where Wilson Casado, certified Human Change Management professional, and Dom Thatcher of Australia Post will speak about an often underestimated factor in implementing change in the Supply Chain industry; Human Change Management. Breakfast briefings are always well attended and good value for money, so don’t miss this one!

The SCLAA (WA) committee has been energised since late 2014 by the new State President, Kym Parry, and a number of new committee members, including healthy representation from the Future Leaders’ Group. Remember the offerings that the association can provide to its members are to a large extent determined by the number of enthusiastic individuals that comprise its committee. Therefore if you feel that there is still improvement to be gained in the way in which events are scheduled and finalised, please come to the monthly committee meeting and share your thoughts with the other committee members.

The GenR8 program was recognised at a national level by recently being awarded the 2014

Training, Education and Development Award at the Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards in Melbourne.

GenR8 aims to create sustainable linkages between employers, local high schools and local communities by establishing schools as a recruitment hub. The program identifies, selects and trains Year 12 students so they are industry aware, prepared and employable upon exiting year 12. Students undertake a Certificate II in Logistics as part of the program. They also undertake a 20 week (1 day per week) structured work placement with a business. It is the perfect way of ‘growing your own’ through a youth engagement strategy that provides real workplace experience, entry level training and employability skills. GenR8 is a four phase model which includes:· Industry awareness and connectivity.· A nationally recognised qualification.· Industry work placement.· Industry employment opportunities. Did you know? The average age of a worker in the TL&SC industry is now over 45 years old? Combine this with projections indicating the industry will need to grow by 41.6% between now and 2017 to meet future demands and you may well wonder where your next worker will come from.

The primary objectives of GenR8 are to:· Address the ageing workforce of the transport, logistics &

supply chain (TL&SC) industry;· Create a targeted, sustainable attraction and retention tool

to increase workforce capability and ‘skill for the future’;· Redefine entry level employment opportunities within the

industry; for example, developing vocational pathways for youth to start in a warehousing, logistics, administrative or workshop environment - and then transition into forklift / truck driving, workshop or office based positions;

· Embed professional industry education and training within TL&SC businesses, with a focus on developing staff overall.

The GenR8 program in Queensland is certainly setting the standard for other States to follow in terms of introducing new entrants to the industry and training job ready entry level candidates. The program has been operational in Cairns, Tully, Innisfail, Townsville, Gatton, Warwick, Brisbane and the South East Queensland corner for the past 3 years.

In 2015, GenR8 is being expanded to the Fraser Coast, Bundaberg, Gympie, Moreton, Kilcoy, Toowoomba, Mackay and Rockhampton. Further information on the program and the regional launches can be found on the SCLAA website.

If you would like to get involved with this program, or would like further information, please contact SCLAA National Office on p: 1300 364 160 e: [email protected]

GENR8

“The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) is focused on growing our future leaders and we believe the best way to do that is to get into the hearts and minds of young people (and their parents) on all available opportunities for employment, growth and challenge in the Supply Chain & Logistics industry. The GenR8 program is definitely the key to ensuring that this will happen. The program was recognised at a national level by recently being awarded the 2014 Training, Education and Development Award at the Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards. This is a testament to how well-regarded the GenR8 program is. We would ask all of the industry to get behind this program and extend the program into your workplace; it just might make the difference.” Vince Aisthorpe, ASCL Awards Chairman and State President of the SCLAA.

O ver 130 members of the SCLAA, AIP and the APPMA, spent their annual Christmas party for the fifth consecutive year with a twist. The members spent the day packing a record 800 hampers, for Foodbank to distribute to those in need at Christmas; many of whom are without employment, families with young children and living on the poverty line.

As Ken McMillan, General Manager of Foodbank Queensland said on the day “The Foodbank Hamper project is wonderful – you are all good people who are helping 800 families at Xmas. I can guarantee that the people who receive these hampers this year will cry because the hampers show that someone actually cares.” The packing of the hampers was a culmination of twelve months of work, over $136,000 worth of goods raised to go inside the hampers and generous support from many companies across the country who assisted with the goods collection. The 2014 hampers were worth over $170 each and were made up of food and personal hygiene products. In five years the SCLAA, in conjunction with the AIP, the APPMA and the QSCLC, have packed 3200 hampers to the value of over $386,000.
